I so agree with you. The amount of help needed to maintain a home like this inside and out as well as the surrounding outdoor landscaping, etc, is great. The help vanished over the decades . High ceilings are grand, but whose going to paint them ? A home owner would be forced to hire out everything at an unsustainable financial situation over time. Restoration sounds like a good idea , but the cost would be astronomical. The utility bills for this structure today would be unaffordable for most people , then taxes , insurance etc. When electricity was added to these monstrosities , they used what was considered cutting edge installation process. But none of that would pass inspection today to qualify for a mortgage . A tremendous amount of money is needed on these properties to even consider purchasing . The desire for restoration is great, but desire and deep pockets seldom go hand in hand, unfortunately.

American doesnt appreciate its history. They just want to tear it down and make room for what they call progress. Can u imagine coming up that drive in a carriage. I bet it looked so grand. Huge entry way and upstair landing with that upstairs porch. I can just imagine it all restored. That unique barrel wall in the back downstairs hall. What a lovely big house. I bet it had a big veranda on the front. U have a receiving room, a dining room, a library and lady's parlor where the basement entry is. In that back room he didnt go in i bet was a small conservatory in its day. Then u have your kitchen and probably what may have been a maids room or laundry or just further room for house duties but would make at present a nice family room. That basement room with no entry to house i bet was cold storage for veg and fruit and canning. So well built to last this long. Such a shame. 2 of those pianos were actually square pianos and were invented in the 1700s. They were popular in the usa in the early 1800s but grew out of favor around the 1880s because the smaller upright piano came about and it was smaller and fit in peoples homes easier. They stop making the square piano about that time. Depending on the maker and condition the square pianos that still survive today that have been restored can be worth upwards of a $100,000 and those are just laying there like that. Such total disregard of their value and history just like the house. "You can never travel forward and expect to reach a destination when you dont know from where you came. You will be doomed to travel in circles." Aint it the truth.

That staircase is more than amazing, an architect, and wood craftsman's beautiful creation, inspired by a vision...I love imagining, and visualizing the home in its prime, the people who lived in it, their family life, their holiday celebrations, and I'm sure, grand parties, imagine a garden party, doors opened wide, party goers chatting while walking through the entrance hall, past the staircase and out the opposite doors they entered...to me, the house feels peaceful, even in its sorrowing condition, it's still just waiting, almost calmly, waiting for someone to love it, and repair it's many wounds....and that's the sadness that you feel when you see it, knowing it probably won't receive it... absolutely gorgeous design for its time...Thank You for sharing this, love old American homes...

The bathrooms wouldn’t have existed so they obviously cut in to rooms to accommodate the bathrooms. I don’t quite get the stone work. Those log beams were amazing! I get excited over homes this old for a number of reasons, one of them being the fact that these very old homes had large fireplaces in the basement along with a brick bread oven. Often times, they’ll get filled in and covered over. I think that there are tons of people who appreciate old architecture. Sometimes these homes get tied up in wills. This makes me think of my old house, which I lived in for 30 years. It had a fireplace in every room too. The cellar also had huge wood logs for the foundation. Part of the floor was dirt. Unfortunately, we had to move, because our farm was sold for developing. As far as the historical society, sometimes that doesn't always work. In the case of our farm house, it was that old, that the original deed could not be traced. So...sometimes there is "red" tape to that too. We considered keeping the house, but it would have cost more than we were willing to spend. It's nice that you documented the history here, before it is gone.

The historical society most likely took an interest in the place at some point. Most historical societies are so understaffed, underfunded, and are often run by volunteers. Just FYI -- architectural historian here in neighboring NC -- the house has a basic late Greek Revival form with wonderful Gothic Revival elements (mantels/woodwork with "peaked" arches). Georgian is an 18th century style and Federal basically early 19th, so a generation earlier. And both of those are Neoclassical. And it Is a trend. Living in Minneapolis where it is back out of trend, I have seen potential projects demolished in favor of entire condos built head to toe in what feels like weeks. No one remembers when our few antique houses and buildings were coveted and people scrambled to swipe them up [and out of my effing price range, then]. Some of those were magnificent Victorians that had been 'on trend' in the 70's and 80's where they also were pushed to modernize them by the grant-holders, and tore out cabinetry and claw foot bathtubs that the last current trend-owners were then having to shell out big bucks to have replaced. The architecture was never an issue as far as finding professionals to properly restore, according to the owners I spoke to last summer. It was the other bad decisions that were hardest because what they needed was sitting in a landfill or an overpriced restoration store. Unfortunately even saving it from being destroyed whenever the house gets bulldozed, those pianos cost so much to restore. Mine has very similar legs though I wish I could grab one of those to replace the one broken leg I have on my 1886 square grand. I saved mine from being gutted and turned into an island or desk. To restore them cost upwards of $20k-$35k usually. The finish on mine is faded to an oak look from its original rosewood finish, some keys stick or slip and it’s a little out of tune but I still play it knowing it’s historical value over its dollar value. You don’t get quality craftsmanship like we did a hundred or more years ago. I wish my generation in their late 20’s and early 30’s appreciated these things more. At the very least, the town should have added to the national preservation of historical homes and try to save it from a demolition. Nowhere in the duplicate track homes or anything built in present time could withstand elements or the test of time, nor the beauty of homes like these!

My Grandfather was a master carpenter. He'd chuckle when someone said older buildings were better built than today. Sure old homes look good and were well-built, that's why they're still standing. The crappy buildings have all fallen down. *To give a grip on remodeling: I inherited a very well-built house and well cared for farm field and wood lot and STILL had huge expenses!* My Grandparents had bought an old 40 acre farm during the Great Depression. Grandfather (so family legend goes) said even HE couldn't save the house. He tore it down and built a new house, saving what he could from the old one not out of tradition but for the building material he could reuse. The new house was built for electricity with one ONE outlet in each room. The windmill that pumped water for the cattle also charged batteries which could provide about 1 or 2 hours of power each night. Indoor plumbing was built, maybe only the 3rd in the county. Septic "tank" was a field of gravel under soil in the backyard. When I inherited, very little had been done to upgrade it. Painting the house and replacing the roof was about all. For example: the space for an "icebox" held a small refrigerator now, but a hole had been drilled through the floor into the basement and wired to the fuse box, with an extension cord. There actually was a septic tank, an upgrade from the gravel field, but nearly 80 years old. Plumbing in the house was no longer up to code; whenever repairs are necessary my handyman brings it to code. Almost every year I add electrical outlets (I've ended up rewiring about half the house as the old wires had deteriorated -- had an electrical short in a spot that started a house fire but we caught it within minutes; I keep fire extinguishers, but all that wiring had to be replaced), plumbing redone as needed, NEW septic tank, new well, 9 solar panels, reinforce the barn (which was at the stage just-before-falling), insulation, new furnace and I added a pellet stove to avoid burning propane in the furnace as much as possible, all new triple pane energy efficient windows, the 3 dormers the siding had rotted and all 3 had to have the exteriors ripped off and rebuilt with insulation and new construction, new front porch with ramp, basement water-proofed and insulated, and on and on. With EVERYTHING I figure I've spent over $200,000 at which point I decided to stop counting. Then I had a professional land survey done and ended up arguing with my neighbors for two years because they had slowly extended over the property line. One neighbor still removes the property line markers whenever I put in a new set and constantly calls the Sheriffs department claiming I'm trespassing (I became scrupulous about not setting foot on her property once she told me to stay off). Rather pathetically one trooper asked if I could stop calling, I said: "*I* have never called you." I was going to do a big remodel -- attached garage, handicap bathroom, laundry room, back porch, but when I found out how much it cost I had to abandon those plans. But the construction company owner had heard of my Grandfather. That's the reputation Grandfather had! My last remaining big project is to restore the stream in the back of my property to a wetland. It's all choked up -- I'm having to argue with the drain commissioner about that. If you know rural areas you'll know. Oh, and a teeny cabin would be lovely back in the woods. If my annuity keeps growing -- I recently moved it all to Tesla and gained $125,000 in 8 months -- someday when I start taking money out maybe then I'll do the big remodel. Love to all of you!
