I just wanted to say how much I love your environmentally conscious methods - re; your reuse of old broken masonry, bricks, fill, and your buying used and remaindered items off the net. I have a 1905 4-storey brick Edwardian that I bought 20 years ago after a fire, and I've spent my years slowly upgrading and trying to make it the most efficient, off grid living space for myself and three others. I've always tried to do so with the least amount new material as possible. I did this first out of necessity ( I was a student for the first 8 years), and now, just to try to be better. This has made me what we call a "dumpster-diver" here in Canada, or what my Welsh friend says is called a "skip-surfer", or maybe it was a "skip- scammer" over in the UK. Anyway, this is because most construction sites where I live throw away massive amounts of good brick, wood, insulation, and pvc, if they have it left over at the end of a job. I'm loving your project, and especially your methods.

Thks for sharing your story. I'm a 68-year-old grandma now, but in my 30's I retrieved tons of bricks and built walkways and garden structure - husband was no help at all (no longer my hubbie, lol😅). Always enjoyed physical work!

You have moisture inside because all the rainwater that runs off the roof collects at the foundation, the membrane you put in only helps the cement not to lose its juice until it hardens, this membrane deteriorates over time and does not hold the moisture for long (they say damp proof membrane should last 20 years but after 10 year it is all holed up). If you want to get rid of mold and moisture, install gutters and collect all the rainwater through pipes to a sewer. There is no membrane that can last underground for a long time, everything is destroyed over time and water will continue to collect through the brick foundation, this brick foundation always draws moisture in. Also make a cement walkway around the house and mix in some water glass sealer to stop water from seeping through the cement, this way you will get rid of any kind of moisture in the house. I'm on my 3rd renovation in 50 years of our 100+ year old house and I know all about brick foundations and moisture. I recently got rid of all kinds of moisture and mold from our house, not through interior insulations, etc....it's the outside that matters. We had our interiors insulated like Fort Knox and moisture still appeared here and there. It is a very common problem in the rainy European areas.

It is a good advice to take care of the water outside of the house. A french drain must be dig around it to evacuate water.

I admire the fact you try and reuse whatever building material you can and it all doesn't go into the dumpster or the skip as you call them in the UK. The amount of useable building materials that go to the dump here in North America is mind boggling! Keep up the good work!

So I’m sitting here, having my coffee and enjoying nature, it’s currently snowing and very cold. Your video popped up and I watched it, and then proceeded to watch ALL of your videos. To be so young and know so much just amazes me. I loved remodeling and restoring my homes and reusing what I could when I could with what little money I had. I’m in my 60s now and I think I have 1 more restoration left in me for the next phase of my life, and watching you is making me anticipate that adventure. Thanks Ben. Can’t wait to see what you do next. Kudos to you.

This so reminds me of when I built my house. Bought a derelict workshop and converted it to a house on a minimal budget. I bought a worn out digger that was little more than scrap. 3 months rebuilding it got it into decent condition. Sold it for a decent profit after house was done. Same with my big van and trailer. Made 4K profit on all 3 after using them to do house, carry materials, dump runs etc. I joined several self build groups and bought a lot of leftover materials at much reduced costs. Bought and renovated a saw mill to do my own lumber recutting. All told probably saved 20-30k on building costs. You can do it if you put your mind to it and not scared to graft. This excellent video proves that?

One tip from someone who grew up farming and doing manual labor. Let the weight of the tool do its work. Watching you swing that sledge hurts my back and arms, use its own momentum to accomplish the task and you won't gas out as fast and you'll end up making good steady progress.

Fantastic work on a wonderful project. Just a bit of Dad advice for you: You did well to drop the grade around the exterior but I fear you’ve made a pond without any sort of perimeter drain. I can’t see your whole plan, but it looks like you could have issues with water trying to make it back into your space. A 12”x12” trench with 4” perforated pipe, routed with the appropriate fall off of the property, covered to grade with washed stone, would remedy it. Hopefully that wasn’t too annoying but it’s what I do. Cheers!
