Lots of comments about Lancasters being fitted with a USA Packard engines to suggest it was an American engine designed and built to there specifications a tad misleading I'd say Fact Packard was a luxury car maker in USA built high end high quality vehicles most people would hopefully agree So when RR approached Packard it made sense to think RR could believe with there reputation and high standards or workmanship that Packard was a good choice to allow under licence to produce the British designed and built merlin engines to supply mosquito and Lancaster factories in Canada and also to England but also to fit to p_51 and Mustangs to as the Brits wanted the merlin fitted to the USA supplied planes These are the facts

Feats of high endurance, fortitude & resilience. Which all crew of course displayed (if they made it back; thinking here of the rear gunners particularly). The Lanc flew with a crew of SEVEN, as compared to the B-17's original crew of ten, later reduced to nine. No co-pilot and it didn't have a belly, or ball, turret which made it vulnerable from attacks from below. Reduced defensive firepower was partially compensated for by flying almost exclusively night attacks, except when special missions like hitting KMS Tirpitz required more precise targeting.

There's also an Avro Lancaster in Canada, and another being repaired at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum-(CWHM), in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. In fact, Avro Lancaster's were also produced at the Victory factory in Malton, Ontario, a total of 430 Avro Lancaster Mk were built. Another note, a secret Avro Arrow was found found on the bottom of Lake Ontario, to which I believe a crew is going to try to get her up off the bottom and try to repair her, and might be able to fly again.

Wow...lots of drama here. Britain and the US are allies and always will be. Everyone is hopefully proud to be what they are. I am an American and proud of it. Both Americans and Brits have plenty to be proud of as far as WWII is concerned. Anyone from one of the Commonwealth nations should feel the same hopefully. Does anyone care about who made an engine? Yeah, Packard built the V-1650 but it was clearly a British engine. Our P-51 would have been a fairly mediocre aircraft had it not been for that engine; talk about a great pairing. So, I suppose many of those engines were made in the US. We in the US had some pretty major geographic advantages. Canada (best neighbor you could ever want) on one side, Mexico on the other, and the world's two largest oceans to the east and west. We were simply too far away for Germany or Japan to really get to us. So, a LOT was produced here.

Who cares if the engines were Packard Merlin or Merlin. This bomber was a beautiful UK designed aircraft that could carry an enormous bomb load, far greater than any other bomber of that period. The engines were mainly Merlin by designed and perhaps some were Packard produced. The unique strength lay in the fact that they were also flown by young men from the Commonwealth being the UK, Australia, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand etc... and who care for Wilbur Finnigan's biased opinion...I've met WW2 US airforce pilots who flew with the Australians and held the RAAF British aircraft in high esteem. I've met their 3rd Bomb Group pilots who flew in the Battle of the Bismark sea as ONE fighting unit who were in awe of the firepower and quietness of the sleeve valve Hercules radial engines powered Beaufighters. Those aircraft strafed the decks of the Jap destroyers whislt the US B25's skip bombed those ships, with P 38 US fighters providing top cover... Finnigan is a dick.

The Lanc didn't participate in the "Battle of Britain" - I don't think it even existed yet. It was developed from a similar TWO engined bomber that didn't have the range, speed, or payload needed to do the job. I believe they were counting on much more powerful engines - eventually! - to obtain that but the ready solution was a longer wingspan and four Merlin's. IIRC they even drew up plans for a radial-engined version of the Lanc in case the Merlin engine came into short supply. No US heavy or medium bomber used inline engines - they all had the simpler radials from Pratt&Whitney or Wright. Putting four V12's onto a bomber was no easy feat of engineering - look at the very long engine nacelles and what would be required to support them from the wing stucture, then add all the piping for the water cooling system.

Let's just admire the beautiful aircraft, regardless of their countries of origins, the brave men who flew them and the women on the home fronts, the "Rosie the Riveters", who helped build them. By insulting the planes and the countries involved you are insulting all of those who gave their lives, regardless of their nationalities, that saved civilization. You are a disgusting narcissist craving attention. A true man can make his point without name calling and demeaning others. Only an insecure individual bolsters his own importance by mocking others. As has been suggested, I would gladly sign a petition to ban this person hiding behind multiple ID's but don't know how and You Tube does not seem amenable to such a solution. For the sake of respect to those who died serving us all, please STOP!!!!!

Susie Q You wouldn't be talking about Soaring tractor aka Wilbur Finnigan would you. He's a very angry man. You see he feels guilty because he was too cowardly to serve his country in Vietnam.......he got a deferment so he could grow plum trees on his farm. He hates anything British because he's one of these stupid Americans that considers himself Irish....even though he's never been there.....he's an IRA supporter.

SuperEdge67 - Three guesses and the first two don't count. My father was a Mossie pilot with the RCAF and served in the UK flying night time pathfinder missions during WW2. Insulting any one of the Allies or denying their contributions in terms of suffering and lives lost, be they Brits, Aussies, Indians, Poles, Kiwis, free French, Russians, Canadians, Americans, etc., ....ANY of them, is an insult to all. Such pettiness is just the cry for help of a narcissist who desperately needs attention. Of course, being an obnoxious A-hole does get attention. Unfortunately, they think it makes them look important when they are really making themselves the butt of jokes. (Actually quite like Trump) A sad fact of life. Debating logistics is fair game but insulting others is just cowardly. BTW, Americans are exceptional, didn't you know?

soaring tractor/Wilbur/etc. By your age you would think you would have learned some manners. Obviously "with age comes wisdom" is not truthful in all cases. Were your parents neglectful or were they trash who didn't know better? Is that why you so feel insecure that you must insult everyone on every video? You ARE insecure or you would not feel the need to be ubiquitous. It's just childish and silly to hurl filthy and vulgar insults to strangers for no reason. Nobody really cares about you but you do get the attention you so desperately crave. Congratulations. Now please act your age and learn some manners. You ARE obnoxious, rude and obviously terribly narcissistic or you would not take every remark so personally. Sadly, Americans are not nor will they ever be exceptional so long as people like you drag down your decent and nice fellow citizens by representing them so poorly. It's always the lowest common denominator that gets the attention, the criminals, the perverts and the loud mouths. Unfortunately, the attention acquired by such people is all negative. You shame your fellow citizens. Now feel free to swear at me some more. It's terribly hurtful (tee hee). BTW, my bowels are quite functional but thanks for the interest. :-)

soaringtractor Even by your standards that was low.....talking to a lady like that. You certainly are a classy guy Wilbur. NOT. I had to put the NOT there because I know you Americans are a bit thick and have no sense of humour and don't understand sarcasm. Speaking of functional I doubt very much that your pecker is anymore which might explain your constant anger and frustration.

soaringtractor I'm convinced you are not actually an old man. You sound like a 14 year old kid. If you are 80 you should be in the Guinness Book of Records as the most immature 80 year old in the world.

One half of all the 7700 lancasters built, 3,440 , had the PACKARD built in USA Merlins in them, the British built Mk B III and the Canadian built Mk X....just a FYI... This Battle of Britain version is a Mk I powered by the RR built engine,,,,

hXc323 Every one ! ! ! I wanted this info out so every one would know about the "Wonderful British Bomber" The devil is in the details...do the research it is really easy to find...Even "British" books have this info in it. Also the Mosquito, the Hurricane and the Spitfire to lessor extent used Packard built engines. The Brits receives 37,137 Packard built Merlins. EVERYBODY "Assumes" that Packard built the Merlin for the Mustang...Wrong...that was a side show only 18,000 Packard built merlins went into Us planes, The Curtis P40 F&L models also used the merlin in about 1200 models.. Just a FYI That info is easy to find...look up the plane and check the models, engine used....

alanrtment porter Just showing that the "British" Lancaster was not all British, you had a lot of help !!! 3,440 lancasters with US Made Packard Merlins and Hamilton standard props !!!! Duuuh !! Where do you get 30,000 English engines in yank planes ??? Packard built 55,325 Merlin engines, and the British got 37,137, per Rolls Royce !!! That leaves 18,000 engines. there were 1200 used in the Curtis P40F..for the British, and 15,000 Merlin engine Mustang, which around a thousand went to the British as the Mk III & Mk IV so where is the 30,000 engines used ???? You do know don't you the reason Packard was building the Merlin was for the British, as an off shore away from the war zone factory ??? HUUH??? And how many US planes did the Brits use ??? Tens of thousands !!! The C47 was the backbone of the British airtransport during wwII the PBY Catalina long range patrol bomber, the B24, the B17 the P40 the P51 F4F wildcat the F6F Hellcat the F4U Corsair.... Hell even your Mkv Sutherland patrol bomber had to use the PW R1830 engines, same as the B24...to get its lard ass off the water !!!! NO You need to go back and do the research and quit running your loud mouth on things do do not know about !!!

18tangles The Brits only paid for the first 320, after that they were built for the USAAF and they Gave them to the Brits on lend lease. ....soooo the USAAF had the right to "Keep" as many as they wanted ......Just the facts Jack...go read a book and do the research, Of Course they kept most of them we were war also and needed planes. You Brits were broke by then and stuck sucking the hind tit !!! and begging at that !!!! FACTS !!!!
@wilburfinnigan21428 жыл бұрын
18tangles Far from it !!! IF you would red those book excerpts from the people that were there you would learn !!! Tell me EXACTLY how did we rob the British !!!! US fucking paid for 31,000 engines and 1700 Mustangs that I know of, as everything shipped after 1941 was lend lease !!! do the research and get the facts and don't do not rely on British Bullshit !!!!

soaringtractor talking of arrogance, what about the U-boat "second happy time" when the US entered the war and US admiral's refused to take advice about convoy tactics and lost many ships to U-boats on the us east coast? then there was the refusal of us generals to accept Hobart's "funnies" for the D day landings in Normandy, why? because they were British. Once again a lot of American lives were needlessly lost. so keep you anti British crap to yourself. attack your enemies not your allies!
