This dance is based on a Chinese ancient poem《小雅采薇》(a part of a book named 《诗经》,which is written by the Confucius).It describes a retired soldier on a way back to hometown.The road was rough and he was tired and hungry in the snow. He recalled those painful feeling with hungry, sick, injured or even deadin the battlefields. The name采薇(pin yin :cǎi wēi)means"plucking fern". The poem was written 3000 years ago, those ancient Chinese are very much different with modern Chinese,it is even so hard for modern Chinese to understand. It is difficult to translate into English precisely.
