Embedding filigree in enamel on copper substrate is a traditional craft with a long history. At the end of the 13th century, enamel was introduced from the Arab States to China and deeply loved by the emperor for its exquisite details and luxurious appearance. During the Jingtai Period of the Ming Dynasty, this production process reached the acme of perfection. Blue glaze was the best among all enamel glazes at that time. Therefore, cloisonné was named “Jingtailan” in Chinese, in which “lan” means blue.
