Hi Steve and Ivana, actually the statue in front of St Paul's church on the hill is St Francis Xavier. He used Malacca as a base for his missionary journeys. His body was kept in that deep well like (white, fenced up) hole inside St Paul's and at some point his remains were moved to Goa.

Malacca was a hotspot back then. Stratergically situated in the straits, perfect place for merchants from India and China to meet and trade. Everybody wanted a piece of Malacca. Man, that was year 5 history lesson stuff we were learning back in the 80s 😅

Mrs C the sultanate of malacca was much larger than the current Melaka state thought, it also stretched to the current Johor state, Singapore and Riau island(part of Indonesia now) if I am not mistaken.

4:51 The Queen Victoria Fountain was built in 1901 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. This fountain, an important historical landmark, is one of two in Malaysia honouring Queen Victoria, with the other located in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. They are among the few remaining vestiges of English rule in Malaysia (then British Malaya, from 1826 to 1957).

Anyway St Paul church, A Formosa and the Settlement are not the only Portuguese influences. There is a St Peter's Church (circa 1710) and St. John’s Fort located southwest of Bukit Cina. It was once a private Portuguese chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist until it was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Dutch on top another hill of course and turned into a fort to guard against land-based attacks from restive Malay forces. This small fort is basically intact as compared to the A Formosa.

Malacca is a UNESCO heritage city....so that what you expected.... I was in Macau in 2018 and was at the Ruins of Saint Paul's ..another Portuguese relic...so i did a comparison and reference to A Formosa & St. Paul's Hill so I can guess the emotions you guys were feeling on the day... To touch , feel , embrace history & to imagine the things or what people were thinking back in those days... The Portuguese settlement is just a small community of Portuguese descent which is usually lively during Christmas period as they have celebration during that period.... I believe they have some restaurants servicing seafood at night as well. Based on my understanding ( my wife and in-laws are Peranakans ) , only a few of the elders can speak Portuguese... Anyway stay safe and happy travels....

The statue at St. Paul's hill was St. Francis Xavier....the empty tomb in the middle of the church was where they placed his body after he died before reaching China, it was exhumed later to Goa, India. The Portuguese ruins can be found by the riverside as well, that was recently discovered and the excavation works are still being done. When the Dutch took over, they renamed the church from Our Lady of the Annunciation Church to St. Paul's Church, hence St. Paul's Hill. That's why you can find tombstone slabs written in old Dutch, you can actually see more Dutch graves around the church Have a great time at the Portuguese Settlement, savour the local cuisine there

The date 1824 you have mentioned actually referred to the Treaty of London or the Anglo-Dutch Treaty dated on 17.03.1824 where the Dutch swapped their colony in the Melaka city-port with the British colonies in Bengkahulu, Java Island, Indonesia. That was how the British first set their foot in the Peninsula Malaysia as Colonial Master.
@davidbanner6440
@davidbanner6440 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the Brits had set found much earlier in Penang, Malaysia back in 1786, not 1824
@ridwantalib5530
@ridwantalib5530 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidbanner6440 With due respect, the date which you referred to is a controversy in Malaysia since it is debatable whether Pulau Pinang was ceded or settled on 1789. Francis Light misrepresented himself and misled Sultan Muhamad Jiwa of Kedah to trade the island off with the British military protection as an exchange from the Siamese attack. Light entered into the contract on behalf of the British Empire with the Sultan despite having no authority from the British's East India Company. So, the date 1789 is inaccurate. 1824 is accurate.

With the stone tablet 😉 these are tombstone Some info ... ST. PAULS CHURCH MELAKA Saint Paul's Church ... is the ruins of a historic Roman Catholic Church ... located on the summit of St. Paul's Hill , Melaka 🇲🇾 The original Church was established in 1521 ... making this the oldest church building in Malaysia The Church’s stone walls are all that still stands... as the roof has long gone Affixed to the inner church walls are Dutch period tombstones ( 1640 - 1795 ) ... these meaningful engraved tombstones , belong to Dutch nobility who are buried on the church grounds Standing out front of the church ruins ... is a statue of St. Francis Xavier ... the tall white statue was erected in 1952 , for the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of St. Francis Xavier sojourn in Malacca ... to this day , an open grave still exists in the church ruins , marking the place of where St. Francis Xavier's was temporarily buried in 1553 , after his body was brought back from Shangchuan Island 🇨🇳 ( where he died during a missionary journey in 1552 ) ... St. Francis Xavier body is now entombed at Goa 🇮🇳 After the Church was abandoned ... the building was used by the British , as a powder magazine From the St. Paul’s Church grounds on St. Paul’s Hill , offers great scenic views of surrounding Melaka

Steve n Ivana, there more history in Melaka than meet the eyes. Francis Xavier, the Portuguese priest has an interesting story. There was a time, when he was at sea, he dropped his crucifix chain in the sea. He said a prayer and you know what a crab brought it back to him. I remembered seeing such crab. The crab shell has a cross on its back. These were kept by the people at the Portuguese settlements. Another interesting fact is that after Francis Xavier death, his body was transported back to Portugal for final burial, in the midst of it, somehow his hand was disintegrated from the body. At the same time too, his statue hand was also cut off during lightning.

That thing you called "tricycle" is a rickshaw, Steve. 😄😄😄 In Malay language it's called "beca" (pronounced "bay-char" (silence the "r")). In the case of European's "colonisers", you would find Sarawak has a unique history because Sarawak (current Kuching) was given to James Brooke for helping quashed a rebellion. And he went on to become the white monarch in Sarawak for three generations. James founded Sarawak, Charles (his nephew) built and added to its territories and Vyner ceded Sarawak to the British after the Japanese Occupation. 😄 Melaka is unique in itself because it has been colonised by a few European countries. The Kristang people has Portuguese roots. And they still speak the Portuguese language although the older version of it. Have a look here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/boaWlZV5jpubjrM I think this couple is still in Malaysia (came to visit again, I think...? They were stuck in Langkawi during the MCO). Maybe you guys could check out that village they visited.

Lost the audio at the end. Picturesque, Steve. Photogenic is more apt to describe a person. Lol. I think history is to be seen, not read. I hate history classes myself.

4:41 I prefer the old-school look trishaw without the over-the-top hello kitty and other animation themes decoration. It's a new thing by the way, I still remember getting in the trishaw without all the cartoon cosmetics back in 2011. Also, the loud songs they played is annoying at times.
