The original version is by South African singer, poet and composer Gert Vlok Nel, a native of Beaufort West, who some 10 years ago produced a film "Beaufort se beautiful Woorde", which featured this song plus a few others from his pen. The film which is in the vein of a road movie is not on YT but you can buy the DVD: it's really worth it. Jordaan's version is more of an upbeat pop song, it has certainly more appeal in the mass market. But Vlok Nel's original is far more introspective, melancholic and forlorn and therefore conveys the sadness and lonesomeness of the lyrics. There is a strong melancholic trait in Afrikaans music: think of Koos du Plessis, Herman van den Berg, some numbers by Koos Kombuis, Laurika Rauch or even Wijnand Strydom. I was on a train to Jan Kempdorp in the army (this is real) supposed to have gotten off at Warrenton station, but met this girl Tania van Niekerk on the train and later disembarked in the morning at Beaufort West..Told the stationmaster I had overslept on the train .. he called the army base and I got on the next train back..the song rings a bit of a bell...syt met 'N Amerikaner getrou toe sy naskool doen in BC Kanada geluk vir haar..
