Beautiful Lantern Festival - Yi Peng - Thailand Holiday - Chiang Mai

Lantern Festival before Loy Krathong. Yee Peng Festival in Chiang Mai (sometimes written as 'Yi Peng') is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month ever year, which normally means mid-way through November, but this can vary.
In Chiang Mai, the ancient capital of the former Lanna Kingdom, Loi Krathong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as 'Yi Peng' where a multitude of Lanna-style sky lanterns adorned with good luck wishes and prayer are released into the sky.

The Loy Krathong festival is celebrated all over Thailand while her sibling festival of Yipeng is celebrated only in the north (former Lanna kingdom). The Lanna calendar system has a different calculation of Yipeng day apart from Loy Krathong's of the central (Siam Kingdom). But people in the north are smart. The don't just surrender their calendar day. Instead they extended their Yipeng festival from a day into the whole duration between the Loy Krathong day and the real Yipeng day yet included the floating of Krathong in the river as an addition into their Yipeng lantern floating ceremony. That's why Thai tourist from all regions popularly come to the north to celebrate, taking both sibling festivals at the same time.

No. Our ancestry are Tai people once living millennia in Chinese mainland before the Han Chinese chased them away into a migration to the south and settling here. They carried along this culture and inherited it here as their new home. Enough of these foul claimings. You Chinese forced taking our properties from us far enough already, even our former land of Xixuang Panna was ours all along until you Chinese used the superior military power to claim over it, taking from ours in 1850. Go read some history written by non Chinese historians of communist propaganda for the one China campaign. I saw this kind of claiming from Chinese all over Yipeng videos, enough of it.

It's depends. Both is as good, and unique, it's all depend on your agenda. (Never been to Ayutthaya during the event, but I've heard it's also good). If you're just going to the festival, it's a hassle to get to Chiang Mai from Bangkok. But if you're planning to explore more than 1 day, Chiang Mai is a good place, it is a spiritual heart of Thailand. Auytthaya can be visited as a day trip form Bangkok and there are a number of ancient temples and sites to see there. You could spend a little more time there (a night or two) but you don't need to in order to see a fair amount of ruins. Going to Chiang Mai involves more travel and really defines more of a 'region' than a 'site' so to really get any bang for your buck in going to Chiang Mai you need to spend a few days there. If you can spend a few days there then it really is worth seeing.
