In today's Thailand travel vlog, we participate in two of Chiang Mai's annual festivals, Loy Krathong and Yi Peng (Yee Peng). We also witness a few unexpected interactions between tourists and the Thai police.

The reason why the police did this was that they were prohibited from floating the lanterns. because it used to float to people's houses and burned We should float the lanterns in the place he specified.

Yea, we saw signs all over the city about that! This is why we chose not to float lanterns. We looked into going where it was allowed, but the prices were very high to get to these places. We couldn’t believe we got to see the lanterns near the river, but it was certainly interesting to see the police! We overheard that they weren’t being rude, but they didn’t want the lanterns to float in the city limits.

There were restricted zone to launch the latterns.Many houses 🏘️🏘️ were burnt while sleeping 😴😪.Anyway,hope you enjoy the festival.

I'm here in Chiang Mai Thailand for my stay and visited the lot krathong festival of 2023. Guess what, a floating lantern burned down a house........

I hope you have a good time in my hometown. That's the one of our beautiful festival. ;) And i hope you will understand. In ancient time we release floating lantern only in temple and only release few of them in each village, but nowaday the tourists float them everywhere and cause the fire that burn people's house and everything nearby. It's very dangerous. For many years the chiangmai goverment try to control incident. We have the rule to play floating lantern [and cracker], but most of tourists, both thai and foreigner, still dont listen, so our polices will be more strict in the festival time.

Last month an innocent family's home and a famous shopping archade down town Cheingmai wre reduced to ashes by these beautiful flying lanterns.

That's so sad. 😞 The festival is beautiful with all of the lanterns lit up in the sky, but we couldn't help but think, "what if..." which is why we didn't release our own. Hopefully the community rallied around the people who lost their homes and shops. ❤️

Hello, I just found your clip, this clip. I saw two groups of tourists about to light lanterns. (Chiang Mai people call this Tung) and I saw the police destroy the tungs of both groups of tourists. If the police actually destroy the tungs of tourists I also have to apologize to all tourists. I don't think the police are doing this wrong. The police work at the end. If the public and tourists are prohibited from lighting lanterns Must be done at the cause by announcing to the public and tourists that the lanterns are prohibited. Do not sell lamps If someone sells them, they will be guilty. This will be correct. Not allowed to be sold. People and tourists have bought it and then he will light the lamp and the police will destroy his. It made him lose his feelings. Tourists come to Thailand because Thailand has a beautiful culture. Tourists love this beautiful culture. And he wants to participate in the beautiful tradition that has been passed down for a long time. It can damage the country. What the policemen did was very rude. If they didn't want people to release lanterns there, they should've forbidden the sellers from selling lanterns there instead of ripping people's already-lighten lanterns apart.

It was an interesting sight for sure! There were signs up everywhere in the restricted areas, but there were also people releasing the lanterns all around the people getting theirs torn up. I think it was just bad luck for the people who the police caught up with.

They could have stop people from lighting their lanterns up from the beginning, or just put a fire out of the lighten up one, BUT apparently, they waited for them to be lighten up, and then came to tear them up and let them burn on the ground!? Fortunately, this didn’t happen directly to us. From what I understand, they were being kind, but firm. I agree, they should target the people selling the lanterns, not the people buying them. But at least no one that we saw got in any trouble, and we didn’t witness any safety issues or damage.
