Please don't use this as a Halloween costume. Sugar skulls are part of the holy celebration Dia De Los Muertos. It has nothing to do with Halloween. Appropriating them in this way can be offensive to those that are part of the culture that celebrates DDLM. I know that it wasn't your intention. :)

I'm not sure if this video is intended as a Halloween makeup tutorial, but I'm going to take the opportunity to post my two-cents on sugar skull makeup for Halloween. The problem for me is the aspect of making this tradition into a costume. It's not a costume. It's not supposed to be cool or trendy like a t-shirt and that is what it is becoming, commercialized. Once a year, I celebrate a beautiful tradition accompanied by many ceremonies to venerate my loved ones akin to people in the U.S. visiting cemeteries to mourn their relatives who have passed. This is how I grieve and celebrate their lives. It is more than just pretty makeup. Yes, the makeup may be cute, but it is also appropriating another's culture taking away from the tradition's meaning and identity. It's flat out racist (yes, you can be racist without being intentional). Additionally, engaging in these types of acts also leads to the homogenization of cultures. Within Latin America, many people celebrate Day of the Dead, but not all individuals do. Different regions have different traditions and only signaling out this aspect of the tradition erases its diversity. This goes the same for individuals dressing up as Native Americans, wearing sombreros and Tequila princesses (the list goes on of course). Not all Mexicans wear sombreros, and not all Latinas are sexy and trying to seduce you. It's a mockery. If you truly respect the tradition, I invite you to find a Day of the Dead celebration near you if you have not attended one yet. Visit and see what it is all about (Mexican restaurants in gentrified suburbs don't count). If you want to engage in this aspect of the tradition, do it on the right days and honor it. Also, to the people who are apologizing for being too angry and taking this too seriously, don't ever apologize. After all, I consider the death of my grandma, cousin, and brother to be a serious matter. This isn't a sugar skull, this a "Catrina" The sugar skull (calaveritas de azúcar) is literally a sugar candy with skull form and color sugar like ornaments. A Catrina (La Catrina) looks like your painting. Both represent Sugar skulls represent the sweetness of death La catrina represent the beauty and one truth "no matter if you're rich or poor, the death is our end"

Catrina originated as a satirical drawing of Mexican people being ashamed of their culture: because of the English/Spanish colonization of Mexico. Slowly, she developed into the symbol of Dia de Muertos as a way for Mexicans to reclaim what is ours. Having other people then use Catrina as a costume in the wrong context is offensive: she is a symbol of cultural perseverance. Her meaning is slowly transforming into nothing because people can't be bothered to understand her significance.

Yes it is commonly known as a mexican holiday but that doesnt mean everyone else cant honor the dead. Its all about paying respect toward the ones whom have passed. Mexico just recognizes it more. That has always been their way. But that doesnt mean other hispanics can pay respect in the same way. In fact most if not the majority of mexicans actually encourage other cultures to join the.
