Picture this. I am a young airman just in from the states. I had arrived about 1:00 o'clock the night before on a C-130 that I had been on for a week. I was on an en-route support team that had gone ahead of a flight of F-4's and met them in Hawaii. The year is 1967 and it is about the latter part of July I remember. I am fresh from the states, but we were the first airplane to leave Eglin AFB, and the last one to arrive. First thing you have to do is find quarters, visit the payroll and medical folks to deliver your records..........otherwise you don't get paid...........and worse yet, if you lose the medical records, you get to take ALL your shots over again. Back then we hand carried our records. The next thing you are required to do is attend a VD lecture by DOC BEAN down at the base theater. Now the good DOC has a whole series of slides of what can happen to "little man" if you don't protect him.............this is prior to AIDS so the scare from "clap" and Syphilis is bad enough. I will never forget his lecture and at the end he told us about the Mun (MOON) River down town. STAY OUT OF IT HE SAID..................it is not the one Andy WIlliams was singing about. He also cautioned us about the locals and how the "girls" would cut you long and deep with a broken beer bottle if you "dissed" them. He told us that he could cure us of the VD, but the stabbing and cuttings could take us out. Funny after 50 some of this is still VERY fresh in my mind. JB

I arrived Ubon Jan 69. Never had a problem in town. 8 months at Utapao lots of guys had trouble off base. Robbery shooting beating stabbings.
