The ruddy darter (Sympetrum sanguineum) is a species of dragonfly of the family Libellulidae. The ruddy darter is to be found in temperate regions throughout Europe as far east as Siberia and as far south as the northern Sahara. This species tends to prefer quiet bodies of water that feature semiaquatic vegetation such as rushes and reeds. The ruddy darter can be found between the months of June and November. The larvae spend the year beneath the water surface before emerging and pupating into adults. Young adults are yellow, but the colour of the male changes to red, just like the ones in this video.
De bloedrode heidelibel (Sympetrum sanguineum) is een echte libel (Anisoptera) uit de familie van de korenbouten (Libellulidae). De libel is in grote delen van zijn areaal een algemene soort die te herkennen is aan de dieprode kleur, hoewel het niet de enige rode libel is. Het is met een spanwijdte tot 6 centimeter een middelgrote soort. De bloedrode heidelibel komt voor in grote delen van Europa. Het is een generalist die rond verschillende wateren leeft en een van de meest voorkomende heidelibellen (geslacht Sympetrum). De bloedrode heidelibel is een soort die pas relatief laat tevoorschijn komt en voornamelijk vliegt van juli tot oktober. Jonge volwassenen zijn geel, maar de kleur van het mannetje verandert na enkele dagen in rood, zoals bij de exemplaren in deze video.

Die bloedrode heidelibellen lieten zich inderdaad van hun 'roodste' kant zien. Ze zijn relatief makkelijk te filmen omdat ze niet continu aan het jagen zijn zoals de meeste glazenmakers.
