What a treat! Thank you for posting :) I wasn't a Disney Princess fan as a little girl until I saw "Beauty and the Beast". Belle was not into looks, she was into books. Belle was a non conformist and she didn't run off to find a man; she wasn't looking for a prince to fulfill her life she was determined to save her father. And when Belle did fall in love, it was because she didn't care about the Beast's appearance, she cared about his changed heart. Belle helped to create her own life and her own fairy-tale

Where Beast/Adam Evolves, the power of love slowly returning him to humanity, Gaston DEvolves. He regresses more and more into his vindictive, animalistic side, especially once it finally clicks in him that Belle truly meant "No". She calls him a monster in front of most of the village, which is the clearest possible refusal she could give him, and his reaction proved that he didn't care. If we think about this in a real-life context, it's frightening to imagine what he planned to do to her, once he'd killed off the creature he viewed as his competition and returned home. There's also social commentary on the villagers, themselves, courtesy of the tavern song that re-puffs this man's ego. At the very end of it, they clearly get excited, over the chance to silence their community's only free-thinking woman. It's not only Gaston, treating "consent" like a dirty word, in that moment. Also, I couldn't finish this, without saying it: RIP, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Orbach, and David Ogden Stiers. We miss you so much. (7/17/2024)

Dame Angela Lansbury thought that another character would be better suited to sing the ballad, "Beauty and the Beast." Directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise asked her to make at least one recording to have for a back-up; that one recording ended up in the movie. The role of Cogsworth was written specifically with John Cleese in mind, but he turned it down. Dame Angela Lansbury recorded her lines during breaks of Murder, She Wrote. Supervising animator Andreas Deja has said that animating Gaston is one of the highlights of his career in animation, largely because of how he was able to animate a character with such drastic changes to his personality. According to Deja, he "never worked on a character which quite the same progression." David Ogden Stiers originally auditioned for Lumiere. Animation historian John Canemaker referred to the Beast as animator Glen Keane's masterpiece. Regis Philbin auditioned for the role of Beast. Walt Disney was planning to make this animated movie as far back as the 1930s. Glen Keane went to the Los Angeles Zoo to study animals for the Beast's looks and personality. When he studied a six-hundred-pound antisocial gorilla, Caesar, and tried to draw him, Caesar charged at him and slammed against the bars. Keane knew this was how Belle would feel when she first caught sight of the Beast.
