I actually think the cut-out face thing is a unique and memorable way to show a dream sequence, as it takes advantage of animation as a medium. It'd look SUPER unsettling in live action, but animators have a ton of leeway when it comes to symbolism and suspension of disbelief. Too bad the rest of the movie doesn't have the same creativity, though.
@yumkas2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was pretty cool! Wish the rest of the cartoon can be like that...

I can attest to that comparison. The live-action Cannon Movie Tales adaptation from 1986, a version of which I *heavily* grew up on, had also featured dream sequences between Beauty (Rebecca de Mornay) & the Prince (John Savage), but showed off the transition with these cool, ripple effect-looking fade-ins to show us that we were leaving the world of the castle and entering that of Beauty's mind. Now I'm imagining them trying to do what Golden Book did and yikes, it would've looked *horrendous.* 😅

There's something strangely nostalgic about the Golden Book Video features, very much in spite of their limited animation. Their comedic take on "The Emperor's New Clothes" always stood out to me.
@shiroamakusa80752 жыл бұрын
By now, how would people rate the animated BatB features that Phelous has reviewed? In order from what I consider the worst to the best: 1.Golden Films Beauty and the Beast (looks like a cheap ad and features the three braindead ghosts) 2.Bevanfield Beauty and the Beast (dreary, depressing and wastes Christopher Lee) 3.DEFA Beauty and the Beast (the ugly elephant-man beast gave me nightmares as a child) 4.Burbank Beauty and the Beast (just forgettable) 5.Golden Book Beauty and the Beast (they should have stuck to books) 6.Ruby-Spears Beauty and the Beast (I grew up with R-S cartoons, so they get a nostalgia bonus) 7.Grimm Meisaku Gekijou Beauty and the Beast (suffers from being compressed to hell) 8.Britannica Beauty and the Beast (anything introduced by Pat Morita can't be that bad) 9.Good Times Beauty and the Beast (brought us Old "Weeeeeheeeehee" Man, 'nuff said)
@starwarsnerd1002 жыл бұрын
I’d put the DEFA one a bit higher. They get some points because stop motion takes effort. Plus it’s memorable as “the stop motion one were the beast is an elephant” while I can’t remember some of the other ones.

Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics’ Beauty And The Beast is the best one, in a non-ironic way. Besides, it’s actually an adaptation of the Grimm’s fairy tale “The Story Of The Summer And Winter Garden”, which is why it feels compressed.

Golden Films are usually the worst because they often spend more than half the runtime on ancillary tagalong characters that add nothing to the plot and serve as nothing more than a way to distract young children. Whatever screentime left over is devoted to a barebones adaptation that either bastardizes the original or removes any characterization to make room for more annoying sidekicks.

I just watched Jean Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête, and a lot of the scene compositions in this Beauty and the Beast look similar to that movie. I wonder if they used that film as a reference or directly traced the frames. It's really bizarre how close they look. Look at the scenes inside of Beauty's house, the dining room in the castle, and the long hallway the Beast stands in; they're like direct copies from La Belle et la Béte. Might also explain the weird scene composition sometimes, trying to translate a live action scene to animation without much use of perspective or shading. Edit: After seeing their costumes later in this video, I'm almost certain they used Cocteau's film to make this one.
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose2 жыл бұрын
Funny, I too was watching that one yesterday. Yep, the costumes are *definitely* Cocteau-inspired, capturing that same Johannes Vermeer aesthetic with the family's peasant clothes, and for Beauty's time at the castle, they use looks that echo Josette Day's 18th-century royal attire. As well as making both Beasts look like they have giant shoulders. 😆😉

I missed Phelan making fun of ugly, but yet comprehensible cartoons. I feel like Phelan now can be considered as expert in Beauty and The Beast.

No matter the quality, it's always fun to see these bigger named actors involved on these projects. If you ever wanted to hear a rendition of Beast voiced by Townsend Coleman (Michelangelo in TMNT 1987) and Beauty voiced by the late Russi Taylor (Minnie Mouse since the 80's), they're in an adventure game called King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow (1992), which featured a lot of fairy tale references in general. It even has Robby Benson (voice of the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beat from 1991) as the protagonist, Prince Alexander.

You know, an easy way to not make Beast/Old Man du Jour look like total assholes is change the penalty for rose theft from "death" to "labor to regrow the rose/pay for damages." And then maybe due to being too ill or elderly, or because of an injury, Old Man can't do it. And because she feels guilty for asking for the rose in the first place, Beauty boards at the palace to finish out the labor sentence.
