Beauty Does Lie: The Untold Stories of Autoimmune Diseases Documentary

In 2006, I produced the award-winning documentary Beauty Does Lie: The Untold Stories of Autoimmune Diseases. The film features seven women living with five different autoimmune diseases.
I was inspired to produce the film after being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease myasthenia gravis in 2001.
This project meant a lot to me for many reasons. In May 2003, I left graduate school at Michigan State University after being sexually assaulted by my professor. I had only completed 17 of the 33 credits required for the Health Communication masters program. When I originally applied to the program, I wanted to create health campaigns. I came back home after the assault taking a job not related to health or communication just to have money coming in. Producing this film allowed me to be a part of something that would help people along their health journeys while raising the awareness of autoimmune diseases.
This version is a rerelease I did in 2014 partnering with the Autoimmune Association, formerly the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA).
