Since the 80s I watched my mom make her mayo hair mask concoctions; which I still use today. Her recipe had been handed down for generations, since back in Puerto Rico. She'd buy a huge jar of mayo and let it sit out to ferment, and separate. She'd use the oil that had settled ontop, egg yolks and raw honey. She was told by her great grandmother, that egg White's were only beneficial if taken internally, because Egg white vitamins were to weak to penetrate through the hair follicles and shaft; so it was useless to use in hair mask. My mother always told me the honey must always be raw, and never processed. Any honey thats been processed is heated and filtered, so it loses most, if not all its natural healing elements. We use a heat cap for 35 minutes now, but back in the days my family would wrap their hair in aluminum foil and a plastic bag over it; and leave it on for an hour. Rinsing with cold water is key to get the egg out your hair properly! Adding a leave on conditioner of your chose is the icing on the cake. I've been dying my hair since I was 13, so keeping it healthy was priority. My hair has always been long, thick, straight and shiny. I believe it's because I deep condition it twice a week with my family's hair recipe. My grandmother died with all her hair, which was down to the back of her knees... I should hope to be so lucky!

She used the mayo oil, then what happened to the mayo? Did she use it in something else? The hair?

My mother used to use mayonnaise as a hair conditioner back in the 80s. She would cover it with a plastic cap to trap heat. Sometimes she would leave it on for four hours for deep conditioning. She swore by mayo
