If you work with electronics, you've seen the double line symbol for a cap before! Capacitors are a key part of every circuit or electronics project - here's what you need to know about what they are, why they're important, and how to use a couple in your circuit to get the value you need.

I swear, it's like the internet just knows. I've been slowly learning stuff about electronics (for guitar and video game controllers, mostly), and I was just learning about capacitors. Thank you for breakin it down for me! ^_^

Should probably note that capacitors are often used in conjonction with resistors, and coils to create oscillating circuits and filters. An RC filter is a low-pass filter, and RL filter is a high-pass filter and a RLC circuit will either oscillate until all of it's intern energy is dissipated in the resistor, or can serve as a band pass filter. Capacitors are also often used to protect a circuit against power surges, because they'll store the excess energy and dissipate that in a resistor. Can't wait for an episode on operationnal amplifiers though.

What camera/mic setup are you using for recording? The picture looks a bit faint and there is a lot of background noise and acoustic noise picked up.

Question: Can capacitors be affected by environmental conditions such as heat and/or humidity? Thank you.

Well the temperature does have some effect on capacitance because area of plates changes with temperature. The plates expand when you increase temperature and decrease when you lower the temperature. The heat can also increase resistance of capacitor which makes the charging process slower.

@@BeautyandtheBolt you forgot the first 1/ though in series. Formula should be 1/(1/c1+1/c2...). If you have a couple 1000mfd caps 1/1000+1/1000=2/1000=1/500mfd. Is a lot different than the correct 500mfd
