I like it because it actually looks like a child (and she’s literally 14). Despite Beauty Inside A Box disliking it for that reason, that’s honestly why I prefer it so much and why I feel so disconnected from the later iterations of her. The face is very accurate in my opinion, though her body does look a bit like a toddler’s (which is explained in the video).

The first Snow White doll is made of composition, which is a mixture of sawdust and glue mainly. Her hair isn't plastic; that kind of plastic didn't really exist in toys, yet at that time. It's just sculpted as part of her head from the composition material and painted. I like her face and I find it indicative of the kind of stylized cartoon and doll faces of the era which had a certain babiness to them even in older characters, think Betty Boop, which I find cute.

The first Snow White doll looks like they also wanted to copy a popular line of dolls called Fairytale dolls the difference is Snow White has molded hair and the Fairytale dolls have mo hair wigs. But the face paint on both dolls is very similar.

@@rulerzreachf4n34 I think Snow White was around twelve in the original stories. Girls could get married from the age of twelve, under the old Christian laws of the time. Which is creepy by the standards of today. But it explains why SW is so trusting of the Witch in the story. She's a child.

i'm pretty sure belle's dress is meant to be gold, too!! and i do know that cinderella's dress in the film is supposed to be silver. restorations to the movie over the years + merchandising decisions have since turned the dress blue. as you'd said about aurora, and her dress being changed to pink over time, i think it's the same case for cinderella and belle; having one simple colour to represent those princesses/set them apart would make branding a LOT easier, lol. loved this video so much!!

Belle's dress is indeed gold in person. I actually wish they had stuck to the gold rather than the neon yellow they use now. Just like how they've decided Ariel is in green now. I know it's easier for them to market them that way, but it's kind of sad...

I once read somewhere that Cinderella's dress is meant to be white in the film, but with merchandise, they didn't want it to look like they were selling wedding dresses to little girls, so they made the dress blue, and it's been like that ever since.
@moonbunny24
@moonbunny24 2 жыл бұрын
Belle's dress is 100% supposed to be gold instead of yellow. If you look at the cover of the soundtrack, her dress is shaded to be very shiny and metallic. Also, if you look at the animation cels, the coloration of her dress was much more muted (closer to Aurora's hair color in the film than Aurora's hair color in modern marketing, if that makes sense). Plus, here's a quote from the Wikipedia article about Belle's dress: "Art director Brian McEntee wanted the dress to be gold so light could capture as many of her movements as possible, despite the color being difficult to animate at the time." That's not talking about golden yellow. All the evidence points to it being gold.

Dolls way were more expensive to produce back in 30s, 40s, 50s... + it was extremely rare to own a doll based upon a character from the film. Also baby/children dolls were the only ones on the market, thats one of the main reasons why Ruth Handler invented Barbie. Thats why Snow, Cindy & Aurora look so different. When it comes to 90s, dolls were made with great quality cuz they were still sold as unique/separate characters, they were merchandise for the the films, not one single unity called Disney Princesses which came out in 2000s. Nonetheless, of all 90s ones, Belle was the worst. I remember as a kid (since she was my fave) I never saw connection between animated Belle & Mattel versions of her. And they never did her right until like 2008-09 I think PS I can't believe you were born in 92!!! I thought you were like 24 old, not 30.... I mean bravoooo cuz you look sooo young & sweet

When it comes to sleeping beauty, I believe that blue color of her dress is caused by the thing that pink became "women" colour around fifties. Before the blue one was more commonly described as a "girly" colour, was considered as delicate and symbolised purity, while pink was considered as different tone of red, so power, "menly" stuffs etc. c;

Not quite. There really wasn't a codified gender + color association until the mid-20th century, in either direction. you see some earlier sources making recommendations (some for girls in pink and boys in blue; some vice versa as you suggest), but generally speaking, there wasn't a set idea of Boy Colors and Girl Colors the way there is today. Then advertisers started jumping into the fray, hoping to sell parents more clothing by making it impossible for different-gendered siblings to share, and the current pattern is just what came out on top. There's no real reason why, as far as I can tell from reliable extant sources.

I think it's a little unfair to complain that the Madame Alexander dolls don't look like the princesses. If I remember correctly, Madame Alexander had a certain number of face molds and would always use the descriptor "as" rather than naming the doll directly. For example, you would have Madame Alexander as "Cinderella" or Madame Alexander as "Dorothy" (Wizard of Oz) so it was more that they were dressing a doll up like another character rather than that doll actually "being" the character. I never collected Madame Alexander though, so I could be wrong.

Embroider Art, you are absolutely right about this. Throughout Madame Alexander Doll Co.'s long history, they only had a small number of face molds at any given time and each face mold had a name. like Maggie, Cissy, Cisette, Mary Ann, etc. New face molds were created over the years to keep up with current doll trends and certain face molds were then retired. They frequently made dolls from popular fairy tales & movies as well as historic figures but they were made with the same limited set of face molds. For instance the later (60s & beyond) their little 8" dolls usually had the Wendy or Maggie face mold.

Have you seen the super early Ariel doll made by Applause? Ariel is my favorite princess, and I had one of these. It was the first Ariel doll available, right after the movie came out. She didn’t come in a box, but instead she was perched on a plastic rock. She had a realistic red hair color, rather than the crayon red she has in the movie. She had a stuffed fin, with a wire in it so she can be posed, but no articulation in the arms. A neat doll, and I didn’t see them around for long. I had several Ariel dolls over the years, but that first one was pretty special. 💗

Unpopular opinion: the faces of the princess dolls sold in the Disney store today aren’t really that good. They look too much like the 3D-animated movies, which is fitting for the characters from that era but kinda awkward for the characters that aren’t. They also have practically the same body mold, which is especially weird when comparing the ages of the princesses (Snow White is 14 and Cinderella is, I think, 19 - they should not look the same lmao).

Sleeping beauty was originally marketed in blue because before they started mass producing dolls Cinderella was marketed as wearing a silvery white dress. However when they started mass making dolls later on they changed Cinderella's marketing to a blue dress so as to not make it resemble a wedding dress. Due to this change they ended up changing Sleeping Beauty's dress to pink to distinguish her from Cinderella

I also think that Pocahontas (Mattel) is the most beautiful one. High quality and gorgeous face. Esmeralda from Mattel (no princess) is gorgeous as well, probably my second favorite

So fun fact actually when making Pocahontas Dolls Mattel would reuse some Head Molds from one of the older Princess Jasmine Dolls and make the Pocahontas accessories and clothes and take pictures with the Jasmine doll as Prototype Dolls so in some of the Older Pocahontas Catalogs you can see some of the Pocahontas dolls might have a Jasmine head mold that had been alter a bit for the prototype, I think they did it for her friend Nakoma too cuz they made a doll of her too but yeah In the prototype time you can kinda see it.

7:25 As a child, I loved the Tyco Ariel dolls (you call the fins baggy, but compared to later dolls, the Tyco dolls had the nicest fins in my opinion), but it's true: they were quite short, especially compared to the (very handsome) Prince Eric doll by Tyco, next to which the Tyco Ariel looked like a twelve-year-old child. Especially with the third version from Tyco, where Ariel had makeup on her eyes and thus made her look older, it was a great pity that she was so small in comparison to Eric. It didn't play on me when I was six, but it did later. That's when I cut off her feet and glued on Barbie feet. It sounds terrible, and it actually was, and it didn't help much either. I also wanted to put her head on that of a regular Barbie doll, but, well, it ended up looking rather strange. Still, I loved and still love the Tyco Arielle dolls. You could (and can) act out Arielle's life under the sea with them. And their hair is also so wonderfully soft. I was also initially enthusiastic about the Mattel Ariel dolls that were sold in the mid-nineties, especially the one you show here in your video: The beautiful hair and the exorcising face ... until, many years later, when I was actually too old for dolls (you're never too old haha), I refunded this doll via eBay. The disappointment was great. The hair was certainly nice and long, the face was also pretty, but somehow much too big compared to Eric (from Tyco). BTW, I'm glad, I'v found your channel. 🙂

Anna, Elsa, Raya, and Mirabel are not Disney Princesses. No slight to you, but if you weren't going to go with the Official Line-Up, I think it could have been really fun to look at Tinkerbell and Esmerelda's Disney Princess dolls, since they were in the lineup originally.

Disney's Sleeping Beauty actually came out in 1959 not 1960,Also the name of Sleeping Beauty is Aurora in case if you forgot,Also The Princess and the frog came out in 2009,Also Frozen came out in 2013 and the second one came out in 2019. I also have had a lot of princess dolls over the years and I have some new in boxes I have a 1991 Mattel Cinderella doll New in box without the little little golden book I got her at my local Goodwill for 5 dollars,I've also seen a 90's Jasmine doll in red that lights up that was out of box and used at a Flea Market but she was 23 dollars which was too much for a used doll so I passed that one. I also have that same Tiana doll you showed us,I also have that Mattel Rapunzel and the Mattel Merida. I also have that same Elsa and the Mattel dolls of her and Anna and the reason there special is cause my mom got them for me after I saw the movie.😁 I love this video,Good job.

I think the reason that tyco's ariel was the last childlike doll was because of the wedding sets. Tyco's eric was ken sized and they packaged them together in their wedding clothes. Looks like ariel is a child bride to a grown man and it is suuuuuuuper creepy

I had the Tiana doll at 13:51 and the Merida doll at 17:28 as a kid (I'm 16 now and no longer have them or any of my other dolls, but I love seeing the ones I had as a kid in the late 2000s/early 2010s and getting that rush of nostalgia. Wish I had been around in the 90s when the Disney dolls were at their prime tho) The ones that I did have tho, I loved. They included, if I remember correctly: 1. A Snow White Mattel doll from the 2000s, with a sparkly dress that included an ombre skirt, as well as a gold colored tiara with a red jewel. I think she might've also come with a ring for kids to wear but I might be making that up. She also for some reason had a gold ribbon choker that was impossible to remove? 2. A Cinderella doll, idk when she was made. 90s or 2000s? Pretty sure she was from Mattel but gave off Simba vibes. Had a white dress with blue sparkles similar to her wedding dress. Hair was platinum blonde, almost gray 3. Another Mattel Cinderella doll from the 2000s, when the franchise started deepening the blue on the dress. Had a silver plastic crown with a blue heart gem. Also had a blue choker, but unlike Snow White (and Ariel as you'll later see), this detail actually made sense 4. An Aurora doll from the 2000s, made by Mattel. All I remember about her is that her head came off once. Don't remember anything about the specifics of the outfit, other than the dress obviously being pink. She might've had a ring like the Snow White doll, but again, I could be going crazy 5. An Ariel doll made by Mattel in the 2000s, got her as a present in 2009. She was wearing a short-sleeved pink dress with silver sequin details, a pink choker, and a silver tiara with seashell detailing 6. A Belle doll made by Mattel in the 2000s, with (gasp) a painted on top, covered in glitter, and a slide-on skirt. Hair was the most matted I'd ever seen. Her head was super wobbly from the start but didn't pop off until just before I would've donated her anyway. Quickly threw her out when that happened 7. Another Belle doll from around the same time. Much better hair, a fully removable dress with a little pink plastic rose on the neckline, and a pink tiara 8. A hand-me-down 90s Jasmine doll from my aunt (looking back on it now, I get the hype). She didn't wear anything that looked like anything from the movie. She had this yellow strapless bikini top with an orange jewel in the middle, and matching yellow sparkly pants, a veil with a gold crown that featured an orange jewel, plus a gold fabric necklace, spiral-looking orange bracelet, and orange shoes 9. That exact Tiana doll 10. A Rapunzel wedding doll from the early 2010s, but with long blonde hair that quickly got messy 11. That exact Merida Doll

The first Elsa doll was always a little creepy! I think its because they made the face sculpt while Elsa was still a villain and then the story changed and they had to quickly cover her up to look more like the final version of Elsa.

I had that 2nd release Tyco Ariel doll and the Jasmine doll you showed. I remember loving Jasmine’s outfits and her hair. My mother hated Jasmine’s outfit and kept making me put Barbie sweaters on her to “cover her up”. Now I kinda want to buy a 90s Jasmine doll just to display her on a shelf in her teal green outfit.

Random story I had one of the first Pocohontas dolls. She was second handed and the person who gived to me said she buyied in the Disneyland Paris and she had the doll very himaculated, basically she never played with the doll. So she was my favorite doll ever and I kept I her in good condition but unfortunately when I went to 4th grade my mom gave the doll to my sister's preschool... I really cried for almost a month... It just that. Deep down I'm still mad whit my mom for it
