I love the mic setup and the difference between the nave rear and front, then at the organ. I don’t know if your equipment can muster it, but you have a great setup for recording in Dolby Digital surround and maybe even Atmos. Can’t wait to hear the recital!

I had the pleasure of listening to this organ at the inauguration of the Bishop of St Davids, it’s a superb instrument and it’s power was demonstrated when the organist played Vierne’s Final at the end of the ceremony.😁👍🎹

Thank you so much for this tour of the current BiS rig and a talk-through of your logic. Absolutely fantastic stuff - then the absolutely EPIC editing, and delivery on top of that. Top-shelf stuff. Bravo Richard! Really looking forward to the rest of the Llandaff series!

Wow that’s a fantastic looking cathedral and organ. Andrew Caskie, Managing Director, Nicholson & Co Ltd., recently told me that the best position to sit and listen to the organ is halfway back, close to the central isle. It’s superb that his team were able to tune the organ especially for your recording, which I can’t wait to hear. I wonder what equipment Anna Lapwood uses to record her organ concerts at the Royal Albert Hall? 🎹🎶👍

Richard, I suggest that you should play the mighty Willis organ at Liverpools Anglican cathedral, I think that you will be impressed not only by the vast size of the building, but the magnificent instrument that occupies this great space.

Don’t you find that you get capsule resonance with the larger diaphragm mics? The 130 have a lot of resonance around 90 hz, you can eq it but. Where does your spectrograph show the resonance on the tlm 170s

Very interesting to see you explain the choice of microphones and their locations. These expensive Neumanns with their selectable characteristics will also change their frequency spectrum, very important if you want to record organs that normally extend down to 32 Hz or even to 16 Hz for the real 32' octave. Only omnidirectional mics can record that. I guess that's also what you should use on the 170's. And it is why I would recommend using the Neumann KM183 instead of the KM184: the latter have less sensitivity under 40 Hz.

From that sneaky smile on your dial you were having just too much fun. Sounded great though. I do like reeds, but as a small child in Manly (Sydney) Australia I did not like the reeds in the rather wheezy organ in Mary Immaculate in Whistler Street Manly.

Two coincident figure of 8 microphones well positioned somewhere in the nave will be fine. The instrument being recorded is the whole building.

Well thought out. There is no best mic setup; just very good, not so good, and not good at all. Just as there's no best seat in the audience. What sort of reverb decay time does this space provide? Without trying too hard, I would guess about 4 seconds. That aids in clarity, I think. You did well with the resulting mix. It was quite the effort.

Delusions of grandeur putting an organ like that in a church that size. I’ve heard it at full tilt and it sounds ghastly, blaring forth into the tiny nave. There is no space and no reverb to smoothe over the brashness. Horrid. It isn’t the organ’s fault really. It’s just in the wrong place. The Harrison organ in St Davids cathedral suffers the same problem to a lesser degree.
