I've lived here in Florence my entire life. I was going to make the same comment, but since you beat me to it. Kudos to you 😊! Alot of people would also be really surprised at the wealth of history that the Shoals has, especially when it comes to music history. But not only does this area have a rich music history. Wilson Dam was the largest construction project in the US when it started. The author of 'Roots' Alex Haley, found out that his great grandmother was born at the Forks of Cypress plantation site. I remember he came to my high school and spoke to all of the students and told us about his book Queen, that was a CBS made for tv mini series that had Halle Berry, Matin Sheen, Raven Simone, Jasmine St Claire, Tom Daly, and a multitude of others, which portrayed his families life on the plantation, and the birth of Queen. You can find that series here on KZbin. WC Handy, The father of the blues was born here. Sam Phillips, the father of Rock n Roll, and the man who got the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lewis, and Roy Orbison started. He was born here. So not only does this area have one of the best lists of #1 hits that were ever recorded around the world. 2 icons of 2 different genres of music were born in this area. Jason Isbell is from this area, and many many others. So actually this area should be called the birthplace of American music. Of course everyone knows about Helen Keller, she is only the most famous human being that learned how to defeat her handicap. Also, there was a well known wagon manufacturer back in the late 1890's-1910's that built a certain kind of wagon. It was more well known than the Studebaker at one time. The old ruins to that place still remains along the Florence canal, just below Wilson dam. I lived right at that neighborhood all my life. Love this place!

San Angelo and Paris are the 2 biggest places, that don't have an interstate that was constructed through there. I think San Angelo was supposed to be included on the route if I-27 was extended(beyond its Amarillo to Lubbock route), but that hasn't occurred to this day.
@TexMarque
@TexMarque 5 ай бұрын
@@BoratWanksta I-27 will likely never be extended. I-10 and I-20 carry the bulk of thru traffic. Most north-south traffic is the flat route to Denver or Cheyenne. There really isn't enough thru truck traffic and the major roads are of great Texas quality. Other thru roads in the panhandle are US 84 and US 287 which have freeway sections.

But US 52 though Rochester MN _is_ a full freeway. It just doesn't have a freeway-to-freeway interchange with I-90; the freeway rebuild left the existing folded diamond in place. I've heard of Florence-Muscle Shoals because some great music came out of a couple of recording studios there in the 1960s and 1970s. One of the studios is called FAME. The name of the other one escapes me now, but the Rolling Stones came there to record. As for Tyler, TX, I've heard of it because my mother told us that before she met my father, she had a boyfriend from there. And much later, one of my cousins on my father's side had a boyfriend from Tyler, too. It's not that my family was from anywhere near there. Both women met their guys from Tyler in the east coast metropolitan area where I'm originally from.

I would consider Texas State Highway 49 around Tyler a freeway, albeit the bare minimum. It has no at-grade intersections for its entire 32 mile length. But it's not a divided highway, just one or two lanes of traffic in each direction at 75 miles per hour separated by nothing but paint and a rumble strip. It also doesn't get much closer to Downtown Tyler than I-20, so I suppose it could be outside the Tyler urban area.

Jeff City doesn't have INTERSTATES, but it does have US 50 and 54 (also 63, though that part of 63 is the same roadway as either 54 or 50 depending on where you are) which are (mostly) limited access divided highways through the city so probably count as freeways. It's also pretty small at around 40-45,000 people. It's kind of a statistical outlier that it's a state capital that's not on the Interstate system, but there's also not much need to hook it up in a hurry; 63 connects it to I-70 at Columbia and is four lanes divided (though not limited access; there are some at-grade intersections). Still, by Missouri standards, that section of 63 is a very good road (much better than it is north of I-70 for sure). Getting from Jeff City to I-44 to the south (about 50-60 miles) is a bit of a pain because you're going through the northernmost part of the Ozarks, and the best options are mostly windy, two-lane, "ridge runner" roads, but building better roads would be a significant project for the same reasons.

Totally did not expect my town (for the last 11 years) to top the list, although I shouldn't have been surprised. I-10 is approximatlely 28 miles from FWB. However, it is all 4-lane or more Fl-85 that reaches I-10 just before Crestview. The only exception is Fl-285 which runs to Mossy Head, but it is lightly traveled and not a problem. Fl-85 into Crestview in the afternoon is quite painful. US-98 is also 4 lanes or more all the way through the area, but in the summer tourist season traffic between FWB and Destin is brutal! Our biggest issue with the lack of freeways is with hurricane evacuation! Should another storm the scale of Ivan comes, it is going to be difficult to evacuate the area unless done with a LOT of lead time. Because of the Eglin Test Range, there are very few alternatives to the main routes inland.
@k8tina
@k8tina 4 ай бұрын
That's why we didn't evacuate with hurricane Ivan. Knew people who rode out the hurricane in their cars stuck in traffic on Hwy 85 trying to get to I-10. And back then, SR-123 was a two lane road, not the 4-lane 'freeway' looking hwy it is today. Crestview traffic has ALWAYS been bad. Back in the day, people bought houses up there because it was cheaper. Hence all the worsening traffic issues. Waiting to see what happens with the supposed bypass to the west side of Crestview (from PJ Adams/Antioch Rd to Hwy 90 with an exit for I-10). Took only 20+ years to finally start building it!!

As someone who grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida pretty much no cities directly on the west coast have freeways. The i-275 in st pete is decently close to the beaches of Pinellas but still a few miles away. The i-75 south of Tampa is located in the rural parts of those areas and quite a few miles away from the coast. Also pinellas (where i grew up) barely has any freeway miles. US-19 is a freeway for about 10-15 miles but turns back into a 4 lane Stroad past SR-580 in Clearwater going into Palm Harbor at it’s north end and past 49th St in Pinellas Park at it’s south end. It does end up converging into the i-275 to go down the Skyway Bridge before US-19 fully ends in Memphis.

US 97 through Bend is slowly becoming a full freeway. There are interchanges south of the city and at the south end of it. However, there is still one traffic light south. And then the "parkway" does have signals and mid-block crosswalks, which makes me wonder. Why that parkway wasn't built as a freeway has me stumped. Oregon just doesn't like to build freeways on highways that aren't interstates.

The nearest Interstate is I-75, which is 150 miles away in Sault Ste. Marie.

As a tourist that regularly visits Panama City from time to time, I do agree that the traffic there is horrendous, and we can’t do everything we want because the traffic is so bad. I wish there could be a solution to this like a spur route of I-10 (like either 310, 510, 710, or 910) or something like a limited access bypass just a wee north of 98 like how Columbus, GA (where I’m from) has. I honestly don’t like sitting on 98 on one of its intersections for like an hour or so. There’s got to be a solution to ease the traffic, especially on 98.
@ColesonKavouras
@ColesonKavouras 5 ай бұрын
@@merrittfriend the main issue I believe is the neighborhood the stretches from 98 to the bay the basically doesn’t allow any new East-west roads to be built. This causes all the traffic coming into town to all funnel to basically 3 left turn signals which causes major backups. And 98 is just so busy because it’s the only east west highway through town

The term "Parkway" does not automatically disqualify a road from being a freeway; in the northeast it often means a freeway which has trucks banned from using it. Most of the Parkways on Long Island are defeinitely freeways, some of which I used to take to work! The Garden State Parkway on the Jersey shore is also a bona fide freeway aside from a level crossing very near its southern terminus in Cape May.

You’re going to college! 😀 And to think, I was following you on KZbin when you were but a callow youth! Congratulations! Vancouver, British Columbia (not in the USA, obviously) is an interesting case for being so large and not having a freeway. The city proper has around 660,000 residents (the metro area 2.6 million). There were projects to build freeways into all the major cities in Canada in the 1950s-1970s, inspired by our neighbours to the south. Such a project got started in Vancouver when they destroyed Vancouver’s main Black community, Hogan’s Alley, 😢 to build what are now the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts. Those viaducts have at-grade intersections on either end, so they don’t count as freeway (and they’re so expensive to maintain and make so little difference in traffic that many municipal governments have promised to dismantle them). Mass protests around that time prevented any further highway projects from happening. There are freeways in the suburb cities of Vancouver (such as the 7, the 91, and the 99), but they all turn at-grade once they hit the border of Vancouver. Technically, Highway 1, which bypasses the whole city, does become the border of Vancouver and Burnaby for a very short distance, but if you exit at that point, you have a long way to go on stroads before you reach the dense downtown. This has led to terrible traffic, but it has also led to Vancouver punching above its weight when it comes to transit. Around 1 in 3 people commute by transit, which puts it second only to New York in terms of transit ridership per capita.

There was a time when the South Bend/Elkhart, Indiana Metropolitan area might have been on this list as the largest. However, over a long stretch of time, over the last 30 years of the 20th century, they built a bypass that carries US 20 and US 31. It is built to freeway standards. Interstates 80 and 90 runs through the northern part of the area, but it is not a freeway. It is the Indiana Toll Road. Therefore, had the bypass not been present, it would have been interesting to see if it would have made this video.

History lesson on Panama City and Destin/Ft Walton: Interstate 10 was supposed to continue on a SSW trajectory out of Pensacola, but this pesky thing called Eglin AFB was in the way and the gubmint didn't want and interstate going through its training ground... so it was routed north around it. Also... in the 90s a spur from I 10 was planned... but it was shut down by the local good ole boy network.

When I worked for the Air Force I regularly had to travel between Macon-Warner Robins (large metro with no real airport) and Destin (large metro with no real interstate). It was maddening because you either a) spent 5 hours on 2-lane backroads through towns with 100 people and one stop sign/streetlight (on the road you were traveling) or b) you had to fly an hour to Atlanta and commute another 2+ hours to WR on I-75, which is technically faster if you're willing to bet on Atlanta traffic not absolutely sucking... Tl;dr do a video on largest metro areas without an airport serviced by at least one of the big 4 airlines (Delta, United, AA, Southwest)

Traverse City, MI has a metro area population of over 150,000 and has no freeways within it, let alone a four-lane connection to a nearby freeway. US-131 is freeway well into Wexford County, but peters out and drops to two-lane at the Manistee River, just south of the Grand Traverse County line (also US-131 doesn't even go to Traverse City itself). Also, the Manistee River is likely one of the longest rivers east of the Mississippi with no divided highways crossing it

That is the problem building a city on a isthmus and older city as well that didn't keep up with the times. Must cities have plenty of by passes or rail or bus routes not in WI lol. Milwaukee is very heavy with traffic, with one by pass that is out dated.

Disagree on Bend. I've gone there numerous times over the last 9 years since we moved to Oregon. Those three miles really function as a freeway in town, certainly not interstate grade but definitely a freeway. Also, the stretch of US 97 becomes fully interstate grade to the south starting within the city limits. Between these two are a few of what I consider to be pretty dangerous intersections where 97 goes over an overpass but the connection is an at grade intersection where you need to floor it to get into traffic.
