You were fishing the "slide" area. I used to fish there on my lunch breaks, espeially in the spring when the blue wing olives were hatching. Before I-15 was finished (1986) you could park on the west side so it was quick and easy to fish that water. Good video.

The Beaverhead can be a difficult river to wade and float lots of sticks rocks and other fly eating obstacles. Drifting it can be a zoo very narrow in a lot of spots with no place to pass and it does gat hammered. The up side is the big browns that lurk and will slam streamers when it’s on it’s on :-) thanks for the video.

Must be both exiciting and scary to fish it from a boat when the flows are up. I remember reading a Gierach story about it a while ago.

Thanks PD. Good to have a bit of commentary. What an interesting looking river! That spot at 12:45 sure looked fishy . . .
@purpledrakefishing3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pat! I came across a lot of great looking water and fished it well that day... Unfortunate as I just think the river was having an off day which can be common on highly pressured streams. I eventually came across a few other fishermen upstream and realized I had been fishing behind them most of the day.

That was the first place I learned to bang the bank with streamers, after no success with other methods. It was a real eye opener and a blast at the same time.

Railroad is hassling the fisherman walking up & down the railroad tracks , on the Deschutes River Oregon. Very unfortunate. Have a good trip.

Sorry to hear that. I am surprised they would bother to harass fisherman out away from any cities.

Why did you decide to fish with an indicator instead of tight lining? I just got the Moonshine Epiphany & Lamson Liquid w/ the Rio EN Line & leader so I'm completely new to EN. Thanks, PD!
@purpledrakefishing3 жыл бұрын
Haven't heard of the Moonshine rods before, let me know how you like it after a few trips. It was mainly because I wanted to cover a lot of water fast and also because I did shoulders the day before at the gym. Tight lining is the better way to go though for better drifts/results. 🍻
@akintomeatloaf3 жыл бұрын
@@purpledrakefishing Ah, ok gotcha, thanks! Would thingamabobbers be fine with the EN rod, like a normal 5 wt.? What strike indicator are you using in the video?
@purpledrakefishing3 жыл бұрын
@@akintomeatloaf Yes, I use indicators with my Sage ESN 2wt that I use with a Rio Euro line. Casting is surprisingly easy with it, though not quite as good with a standard rod in terms of distance. The indicator I am using is the Leeland EZ Trout Floats---by far the best indicator I have ever used and are easy to take on off the leader without kinking up the leader. Very sensitive too. If you are using a Euro fly line, I would highly recommend using a leader that is 10-12'. Casting is so much easier and the thin Euro fly line is almost like an extension of the leader and you don't really need the 15-20' leaders anymore.
@akintomeatloaf3 жыл бұрын
@@purpledrakefishing I'm starting out with the Rio Euro Leader and then added more sighter and then more leader below the tippet ring. I'm excited to fish the Merced tomorrow so hopefully I'll hook at least 1 haha. Thanks for all the tips, PD! (This is FishingWithKen btw...) :D

Great great vid, PD! Enjoyed your commentary. Got skunked again last week at Putah Creek and the Yuba. I refuse to give up. Your vids Help! And locals turned me on to FlyFishFood for help. Did you use a hatch chart or ask the locals about the fly selections?
@purpledrakefishing3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Putah is one of the toughest rivers to fish in the West IMO. That river gets hammered year in year out and the fish are smart. I got very lucky that day when I fished it. I heard the Yuba has gotten tons of pressure the last few years and the fish tough to catch now. I did look up hatch chart for the Beaverhead and didn't find much. The river from what I read isn't know for its hatches like other famous MT rivers. I did read that the river has a decent yellow sally hatch in June but I didn't see any and the yellow sally nymph I tried didn't get any takes.
