Although many believe beavers are docile rodents, they can be full of energy, especially when it comes to building and construction. American beavers have four iron-infused, chisel-sharp incisors that never wear out and they make sure to put them to good use. Munching through trees up to 50cm thick and propelling through water at 8kph with their paddle tails and duck-like feet are just some of the skills these rodents display when gathering materials to build their winter home.
Unlike humans, beavers do not have access to metal cranes and construction machinery, but they do rely on their natural surroundings to make their home secure. Beavers use canal highways to float heavy cargo to their building sites and are fuelled by the sound of trickling water to persevere and build their winter lodge. From piling logs and branches to sealing their structure with mud, there is lots of work to do to finish their new home, before autumn is over and they’re met with the harsh winter cold.
