I'm a beginner in jazz... I'd like to play like that. Looks so easy but it gives me headaches and cramps!!! hahaha! I should have practice rudiments and listen to a teacher at 12 when I began to play. Now it seems I'm condemned to play square rock... Young players! Practice your rudiments a lot and use the good way!!! :)

As a fellow jazz drummer, my only complaint is you land on the 1 alot with your bass drum. Kenny Clarke did an interview once where he said how landing on the 1 just puts you there, but landing on the 4+ launches you there. Landing on the 1 typically makes your groove clunky, and can sometimes encourage rushing or dragging. Other than that, it was great!

I just got that exact ride and i thought i would always love having a 2002 but im a bit disappointed by its high sensitivity, although if my playing was more articulate than i guess it would sound a lot better.

Great man! Can you explain what you did to hit that snare at 0:34? I never seen that, hitting the stick and making the snare resonate...that's cool, but i play mostly rock! Cheers!
@JoeNocella
@JoeNocella 2 жыл бұрын
It was basically the right stick hitting the left stick as the left stick is sitting on the snare. It is called a stick shot. Buddy Rich used this a lot in his playing. I do it once in a while just to get a different sound at certain times during a song. Thanks for watching!

As usual I was drawn into your playing. I'm trying to learn "Santeria" by Sublime. It's swung 16th notes single handed on the hi hat. I like to play thumbs up French grip for shuffles on the ride. I noticed you kind of played French grip on the Hi hat for this tune. Do you tend to play with French grip for upbeat shuffles, jazz,,,on the hi hat?..thanks!
@JoeNocella
@JoeNocella 5 жыл бұрын
I've played Santeria a few times with different bands. Like you said, it's a quick shuffled 16th note pattern on the hi-hat. I play it pretty much with a french grip with the right hand. Sometimes I'll switch to a German grip and use the wrist instead of the fingers. You get a stronger sound this way. Todd Sucherman explains it well. It's like cutting motion with the right hand...go to the 39 minute mark on this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4aYkIGAm7OopLM
@Plydrms
@Plydrms 5 жыл бұрын
Is this basically moeller technique? I think this girl drummer looks so relaxed. The guy is referencing moeller technique, but looks like the motion is exaggerated and he's working a lot harder. It looks like she's playing more like American grip. I feel tension playing the upbeat (around 90BPM) shuufle on the HH playing American grip. She makes it look easy though. You would tend to keep the French on the HH? I guess there should be no tension, like Todd says? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYqyf5dpjZmnoKucttps://kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJfcgpWbf92gjNE

Maybe I'm over complicating it. That fast shuffle just seems easier using French grip thumb on top. It feels natural to play the ride that way if you're right handed. I have to turn my hand up to play that way on the Hi Hat because it is to my left.
