I actually like the footnotes in Babel because it showed that hey this isn't just stuff that the author is putting in here to add to character depth, these are supported/inspired by real things that happened. I dont know... its kind of like if you read a scholarly article, there are footnotes to support their statements.
@cori47277 ай бұрын
I WISH every book had a recap from the author in the beginning! Not in the actual book itself. Just like a, "Hey, here's everything that happened in the last book that you might need to remember" that's included before the actual book. Bc my memory is soooooo bad, and so often books DON'T recap what happened and I have no idea what's going on, and I just can't be bothered to reread every book every time!!

Absolutely! I think it should be a publisher requirement, particularly for super-long Fantasy books. I feel like James Islington did this for his Licanius Trilogy but I can't quite remember.

dont feel bad about purchase requests at your library! Few ppl are up to date enough to come up w a book the library doesnt have, and if they dont think its a good purchase, they won't fill the request. its also rly likely they have a to-buy list and ur request is a great way to track interest in the title! think of it like you giving them the green light to purchase a new release. (from a US library worker)

I did the same thing when I read Babel. I almost DNF’d it when I was just reading the physical copy at the beginning because the footnotes were killing me and it felt sooo pretentious. So I started listening along to the audiobook too and ignoring the footnotes. Once I did, I was able to really get into the story and was glad I didn’t DNF in the end

Currently reading A Tempest of Tea and here's how I recommend going into it: don't think Peaky Blinders meets Six of Crows, think a London-based version of We Hunt the Flame. It has helped my enjoyment level when I realized it was more like We Hunt the Flame than Six of Crows. It doesn't feel like an exact repeat of We Hunt the Flame, but has some similarities. Are their similarities to Six of Crows? Maybe, but more or less that A Tempest of Tea and Six of Crows are heist books with morally grey characters. Hope that helps! P.S., this is coming from someone who LOVES the Sands of Arawiya duology. Edit: finished A Tempest of Tea and gave it 4 stars and plan on continuing the duology.

Thanks for the balanced review of Babel - the only reviews I've seen before were either overly gushing or of a neutral, "nah, not really for me." type. I love linguistics and etymology, and I'm quite partial to a Victorian setting, but I until now I had no idea about the overexplanatory footnotes. I can't bear being talked down to, especially if it's regarding a topic I already have some knowledge of. If I ever get around to reading Babel, I'll make sure to go the eBook route so I can easily skip the footnotes if necessary.

Hi Becca 🤗 As a librarian, I love when people make a request or a suggestion (even for a book they allready have read and love). I’m a library technician in Canada: 1. we don’t have books before they’re published (only publishers have them or stores). 2. you pay taxes - libraries are funded through municipal + federal tax money + grants (in Canada, assuming it’s the same in UK), so don’t feel bad for requesting things 3. it (the books) need to be processed (cataloguing + barcoding) so that takes a bit of time; it won’t come into the library immediately after publication 4. popular series will probably be purchased anyway by the library; they might just take a couple extra weeks to come in. 🫶🏻🫶🏻

59:20 oh my god thank you ! I ended hating babel because of this very reason : R.F Kuang really thought that her readers were dumbasses who wouldn't get the point if she didn't explain it. I rarely felt that insulted while reading a book, it was so condescending. I ended up give it 2 stars because the prose was very good and I liked the discussion around languages. Her crusade against white feminism really pissed me off as well because setting that in a middle of XIXth century setting was immensely stupid.
@GeekyC.7 ай бұрын
Exactly why i will not pick up this book.
@Rainbopagn7 ай бұрын
She wasn’t being intentionally condescending. Academic settings can easily lose a reader and so she overexplains to try to make it more accessible. She was also playing with a new style with the footnotes etc. She’s said that it’s her worst. Though if you hate this style then avoid Emily Wilde because Fawcett does the same thing.
@ellyra4127 ай бұрын
@@Rainbopagn I totally disagree with you, she wasn't overexplaining the academic side of things at all, she was slamming the reader with the political message over and over as if they didn't have the critical thinking skills to get it. I have read plenty of academic setting books, this was absolutely not the problem here. And I have read Emily Wildes, completely different than what I am talking about. I actually enjoy academic style, why would you assume that I wasn't familiar with it in the first place ?

I have a similar issue with Babel like you - the characters don't feel like characters, they feel like "tools" in a way. They are just stand-ins for clichees and to voice the author's opinion like hitting you over the head with it instead of letting you draw your own conclusions. I really liked your combination of Bookopoly and Shelve it or scrap it, it's two fun things combined.

Oooh, if you get that Other space again, Bats of the Republic's a good choice. You have to kind of let go of the concept of a novel, since it's definitely ergodic lit (stories told through format instead of strictly words), and it's fantasy, but wild west fantasy mixed with a dose of Just Plain Weird and Kinda Cool™. I think with how much you loved the Illuminae books, you'd love this one, too. Completely different stories, but the feel's there.
