In today’s episode, Becket talks with biblical scholar, Robert Gagnon, about whether or not Christians should attend a gay wedding. The way he answers this important question is surprising and eye-opening. I think this episode will be of great help to those struggling with this question.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

I was born pre-disposed to bisexuality and polysexuality (to use modern terms) but I always knew that it wasn't God's design, even before I was born again. When I became born-again, that propensity didn't disappear right away, but it's not who I am in God's eyes. It has all but disappeared after walking with the Lord for 20 years and when my sin nature tries to steer me in that direction, I acknowledge it and then bring it before the Father in worship. He has never failed me.

I had a similar sexual proclivity and knew it fell outside God's design for me. Nonetheless, I pursued it for many decades but grew more miserable, more dissatisfied, and despite being promiscuous, I always felt empty afterwards and like something was missing. Sin feels good for a season until it enslaves and controls you and destroys your emotions, hardens your heart, affects your ability to love, and leaves you open to the Adversary.

I am faced with my daughter’s “wedding” in some months ahead. We just received the invitation today. I had to listen to this in parts-- because this is the most difficult time in my life right now. It just keeps getting worse. First, it was she was bi, then she was gay, then she declared she was non binary. She no longer speaks to me, only my husband. A few weeks ago it was the Now engagement party which I didn’t attend. Next is the wedding. God knows my heart. Need some prayer friends.

@@cc967 it is spiritual warfare. Also it seems like it is a series of manipulative steps. If you choose not to accept a step, you will be possibly be cut off. First, you have to accept bisexual, then you have to accept a girlfriend, or several girlfriends, then you have to accept a potential marriage, then you have to accept possible children. All of these steps are against what we believe God would desire, so it is a struggle through each step. Just as things settle down, something new pops up. This is just how I am seeing my personal experience at this point. I’ve been cut off because I did not accept the “non-binary” step. Now it is the engagement and marriage. “Sin” is nothing more than religious superstition. In common with the vast majority of Norwegians, I adhere closely to the laws of our nation. Those laws never as much as mention the word “sin”, far less define it. Under our laws, it’s a crime to expose our two young daughters to religious books in our schools. My marriage to my wife is, on the other hand, entirely legal. Nobody gives us a second look when we hold hands walking down the street or stop to give each other an affectionate little kiss. What makes you imagine that our private life is any of your business while it is entirely within the law of the land?

@@anushkasekkingstad1300 God didn’t say homosexuality is a sin everywhere, EXCEPT in Norway. Just because Norway is liberal, and okay with everything under the Sun, isn’t going to save Norwegian citizens from the final judgement. It’s actually not okay to be homosexual, according to GODS laws. Man has always tried to exalt himself above God, just like Satan did, and he even got evicted from heaven because of it. Now he tempts people to exalt themselves above God, and that’s because he hates Almighty God, and wants everyone to rebel against God just like he did. And it seems like most Norwegians have taken the bait, and you’re playing right into Satan’s hands. You’re in for a rude awakening someday. Don’t say no one warned you.

Christians ARE compromising! Badly. Because they IGNORE what is plainly said in: ROMANS, Chapter ONE, Vereses 26-28. Being Queer is a Sin. Do the gays REPENT? Change their Lifestyle? Ha! Keep dreamin'! But do the Churches dis-fellowship them for no repentance? Read those verses again. Its more about MONEY than Bible-teaching. If they preach against it, as they should, its less money in the giving-plate on Sundays. Its more about paying for a building than following the WORD. Which is why i say: Any church that never kicks anyone out, isnt worth going to. Even worse, some churches let known gays teach. Pathetic. No wonder some leave the faith. No standards. and if you stand up for that, they'll slam YOU with "legalism". and people back down. So much for being "the Salt of the Earth".

When I got married 35 years ago, my dad did not give me away as my husband-to-be was not a Christian. He let me know from the very beginning that this would be the case. I understood,as he was a very strong and faithful believer. Nevertheless, I went ahead and got married anyway. After listening to this, I realize now that my parents made a difficult choice in even attending our wedding. Fortunately, my husband was saved two years later - no doubt the faithful prayers of my parents were answered. I really do believe that my father’s conviction in not giving me away had a saving impact my husband.❤

My own feeling is that even conservative churches are soft-pedaling because this aggregeous sin has come into just about EVERY SINGLE FAMILY in the church! (by that I mean our extended familes ... e.g., my nephew is gay) and we struggle between unconditional love for them as eternal souls without affirming their sinful lifestyles. It IS a struggle. My late/former pastor's grandson had a destination gay "marriage," and the mom and dad and brother all flew to Hawaii to "celebrate" this heretical event and share photos on FB. I was thankful my former pastor wasn't down here any longer to witness such blasphemy. We've chosen unconditional love for our relatives over obedience to our Savior.

@@KristaBrewer-rq7mo I also have a male cousin who “married” a man. He only invited certain hand-picked family members he knew would be accepting of their so called union. Some of those even CALL themselves Christians, but knowing at least a couple of them, I’m sure they congratulated them and wished them well. 😢 He actually did me a favor. I wouldn’t have gone anyway, even though as kids we were close. This way I didn’t even have to RSVP to say I wouldn’t be attending….i didn’t have to answer questions about why I wasn’t going or why I was so “unloving”….I could never have gone to that, and never congratulated them…..for what?? Why would I celebrate something God says is wrong and can only hurt them in the end? But I’ve prayed for him, and will continue praying for him. I also pray for the other guy (both of them have the same first name ) to be saved, but that they’ll mutually lose interest in each other and in same sex attraction, and be willing to part ways, even not having any further contact once they do. God doesn’t honor gay marriage, so it doesn’t fall under the category of “what God has joined together” God wanted nothing to do with that. They might need to divorce in a civil court but God didn’t honor their “vows” so if it wasn’t required civilly, they could part ways without even getting an official “divorce”. It takes lots of spiritual warfare but it’s worth it. People that are deceived, don’t know they’re deceived, and that’s the whole point. They need our prayers even if they don’t think they do. But WE, KNOW they do. For some of them they may have NOBODY else praying for them, and we may have to stand in the gap as God leads us to. 🙏🏻

I cut ties with all my dear friends whilst He showed me his ways during the pandemic and lockdowns were in place. It was the perfect timing for isolation and strengthening myself. However, now that I'm three years in my walk with the Lord, my dear best friend from back then announces he is getting married to another man. I have not replied but I feel convicted not to attend. I haven't found the strenght to tell him to his face why I cannot come. But I know eventually I will have to -- because I love them both, him and his husband, and don't want them to perish. We are members of the body of Christ and citizens of the Kingdom. It is not for us to attempt to impose rule on the world outside, that judgement belongs to God alone. Have you considered telling your friends that you would never choose be deceitful or hypocritical toward them, knowing that you no longer belong there? He covered that point when he added two more commandments in the New Testament (1)”love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and strength” and (2) to “love your neighbor as yourself” If you truly love people, you won’t WANT to do anything to hurt them….you won’t WANT to steal from them, or lie to them, or murder them, commit adultery on your spouse, etc…You won’t NEED the LAW to tell you you can’t do those things, because you won’t WANT to do them anyway, with OR without the law. God does not “wink” at sin. If he says in his word something is a sin, it’s a sin. It doesn’t matter if we say it’s not, HE is GOD and WE are NOT! He created us, and HE gets to set the standards. This “I’m okay, you’re okay” attitude of I can do whatever I want as long as I believe it’s okay, is NOT BIBLICAL. Yesterday I read a comment from a self-confessed practicing witch who SAYS she “loves Jesus”……she was very adamant and everyone ELSE was wrong, according to her. She’s convinced God is okay with witchcraft when there are so many scriptures that CONDEMN witchcraft and anything that has to do with the occult. People see what they WANT to see, and not what’s ACTUALLY written in the Word of God. If you google scriptures on homosexuality, you’ll find many, both Old and New Testament, that have nothing good to say about it. But people STILL try to twist the scriptures to find any excuse to continue in their sin.

I so appreciate your show Becket. I struggled with sexual identity and came to see it as sex addiction, particularly painful around same sex attraction. I did so much work on myself to feel better. Finally when I asked Jesus to heal me, he did. The obsession and compulsion are gone. This was 15 years ago. I experienced sexual abuse as a child and grew up in a home where one parent was alcoholic and believe that those fact's affected me, caused so much confusion and suffering. I'm very grateful for the healing I've experienced and know that many gay and bisexual people are extremely unhappy and confused. Jesus heals. Thank you for your powerful message.

Three years ago my husband and I attended our daughter’s wedding to another woman. We struggled with attending even to the moment we were there. So much pressure with the family to attend, not to have gone would have cut us off completely from the rest of our family and we wanted our daughter to know that we love her. However, we struggled so much with the celebrating something we were absolutely mourning and it showed on our faces. Now my daughter is so hurt that we ruined all her wedding pictures by wearing our devastation on our faces, and is no longer speaking to us. I completely regret attending now and wish we had made a different choice.

So glad you found Jesus Becket. I love you from on line because you are forgiven. My son has fought thinking he was gay. He has said that he never wanted the sex. Sometimes when people don’t feel like they fit in they will turn to somebody who they fill comfortable with. Thank God he decided to leave it behind. He was raised in a Christian home so that held him back I think from giving in. I always think if I had had another child would he not been tempted to go that way. He lives with me. My husband, his father passed last and he was sick for four or five years ago. They loved each other. When I told my husband he was gay he said he would still love him. But he has stayed away but is on disability with a decease that affects his bones and muscles. I had him when I was eighteen so we are more like sister and brother. Any how he pulled away from it. You tend to think what did I do wrong. But he never was able to feel good in it. He handles all our business and he’s home and he’s a Christian so alls well. Close call. This is kind of mixed up but that’s my story.

In this day and age and I am sure through out history, Christians try to fit the Bible to suit the culture. We are not supposed to change the Bible. The Bible is supposed to change us. "Love is love". No, love is NOT love. It is not loving for a Christian to help someone to celebrate sin. As Christians, we can absolutely love non believers. Care about them. But we can also absolutely love someone to Hell by not speaking the whole Truth.

@@KayleePrince-we5pb that’s not what Christians mean when we say something is leading someone to hell. Hell is the wilful absence of God, it’s not a physical torture chamber, it’s a spiritual prison that they themselves have the key to. If someone is living a lifestyle that is opposed to God, they are already in a form of hell. I do not believe anyone should be in that prison, because it’s not where human beings are meant to be, but I believe people can put themselves there due to sin. And sin is wilfully going against God. Compassion is what anyone needs when they are struggling with sin, but their sins should never be accepted, because that only ties them further to sin.

Thank you, Becket, for having these conversations about this issue specifically. My husband and I are dealing with this question at this moment, being the only biblical Christians in his culturally Hindu (and now extended catholic) family who are all excitedly preparing to attend his sister’s homosexual “wedding” in December. My husband and I have been dreading and also preparing for this moment for 6 1/2 years. We have read the scriptures, we have spoken with elders, with red Rosaria, Butterfield’s book, and I have listened to many of your discussions on KZbin. My husband and I have come to different conclusions. He, after searching the scriptures in this particular context, seeking the input of elders, and having long discussions with his sister and family, has agreed to attend under very specific understandings. I have had my own conversation with her, and explain the reasons why I cannot attend. He has sat down with his sister and had a very direct discussion emphasizing that he loves her and wants what’s best for her, and where they disagree is on what’s best for her. He has a point like blank said he does not believe that being in a same sex union is good for her soul, nor is it a marriage. In the Hindu culture, the brother is expected to participate heavily in the wedding ceremony. He cannot support their wedding nor participate in any of the brother’s duties, both due to the issues of idols (it will be Hindu), as well as do the fact that it’s homosexual. But knowing that, if she still wants him to be there, he will attend. He has had four distinct, multiple hour long opportunities to be able to explain the gospel to her. I, in my own discussion with her, used the same language that I love her and want what’s best with her and that where she and I disagree is on what’s best for her. God gave me the opportunity to share with her what the Bible says not only about marriage starting in Genesis, but also God is unequivocal in the old testament stating that a man shall not live with a man as he would is a woman, and vice versa. The net result has been that I feel like my relationship with her has actually been better because we’ve been honest. And to my husband, she has directly said “I don’t want anyone there who is not gonna be happy for us in our wedding, except you.” My husband still goes back-and-forth and ask the question if he is doing the right thing. But we also have another complication, that if my husband does not attend, his family members will write it off as “his white Christian wife made him not come.” Whereas, if he attends, but does not participate, we are praying that the Lord will give him opportunity to explain why I am not there, and why he is there, but not participating. To further complicate this again, we just returned today from my husband’s cousin’s wedding to a cultural Catholic woman. His cousin has expressed a desire to be baptized into the Catholic church. But at the same time his cousin and his bride participated in a full Hindu ceremony, including idol worship, and the brides father made a point during the reception to single out the brides, lesbian sister, and celebrate her recent marriage to another woman. My husband and I had our hearts absolutely break when my father-in-law stated afterwards that it was nice to have attended his first “Christian” wedding. By this week, recognize that he missed ritualistic tradition for Christian belief. And my husband’s dad has stated that he believes that we are caught up in a cult, because we believe that there is only one correct view of God‘s word, and that is a biblically defined one. My husband now think that maybe God was directing us correctly in one of us attending, and the other not, because people will ask questions, and if neither of us attends, they will ask the “Catholic Christian” cousin what the Bible says, and why they can attend and celebrate this wedding but not my husband and I. And we know that my husband’s family would not receive an accurate answer as to what God says about homosexuality from his cousin and his wife. I don’t know if this is something that you might be able to speak to Becket. Or if you know someone who might be able to speak to the situation. We do not want to sin, but we feel at the moment that it is the right call for my husband to attend under the specifications that he has made, but not for me to do so. We know that we are going to come up against a lot of criticism and censure for both of our decisions.

I am sure that it feels painful to not support your children in this but remember that you can love your children without giving the stamp of approval on marriage that is not between a man and a woman. Stand on the Word of God. Always always put Him first..

A shame most ppl wouldn’t know this but jeez you put it well into words, but yes I love my kids of mine regardless of what their choice is I rather be respectful on what they do in their life, but hey that’s just me and no I don’t have kids of my own just an example.

We already made this decision a long time ago, but always good to have it reinforced so scripturally. I really appreciate those closing comments by Dr Gagnon in regard to being manipulated or threatened by the child and the loving response to them.

I so needed to hear this! My daughter is 17 and has been dating a girl for over a year and she does not understand that it is out of love that I will not be a part of that part of her life so she moved in with her Father and won't even speak to me. This confirmed that I am doing the right thing! ❤ sadly her father says he's a Christian but all the while says love is love..awful! It's a crime I pray he repents of.

So, now you have less influence than your ex. I'm not saying march in a pride parade, but keeping her close would give you more chance for intervention.

Your relationship with your husband was a failure and now your relationship with your daughter is a failure. Like Trump, you insist that nothing is your fault, despite you being the common denominator in both relationships. At least your daughter has one caring, supportive and worthwhile parent. Incapable of maintaining a relationship yourself, you seem determined to deny your daughter her happiness.

A few months ago, I was anticipating that I MIGHT get an invitation to a same-sex wedding of some neighbors, and I was really trying to think about my response. I knew I wouldn't attend, but I still didn't want to drop a bomb. So, I found what I thought was a graceful response. Some may think it was a copout, but I wasn't prepared for a showdown. Anyway, the response I planned was, "Thank you for the invitation, but I cannot attend the wedding due to a conflicting commitment." My conflicting commitment, of course, is my commitment to Christ. This is not to say that I would avoid all conversations about my faith, but this was a couple that I didn't know THAT well, and I thought it struck the right tone for the situation. BTW, it ended up being a non-issue because the guest list was small, but the possibility provided me an opportunity to think about my response.

Why plan to skirt the issue? How about being always ready to give an answer for the hope that lies within you? These people are lost and in need of a savior.

You did well with what you had. God doesn’t want us to force things down anyone’s throats especially when there is no relational connection to pass across the right message. Ofcourse if they probe me, I would continue to explain in truth.

@@cynthiafisher9907 I would absolutely share my faith, but I think this situation requires some relationship building first. I want to show that I pose no “threat,” but if I lead with what might be perceived on their end as judgment, I fear the relationship building piece might be lost. Trust me, I am in regular prayer for this couple and am actively seeking an opportunity to witness.

That was a perfect way to end the talk... when he said you become enslaved to their sin, wow! I think of Andrew Klaven and his sons wedding to another man. He said he was torn but ultimately decided to attend. Forever, he has now said he loves his son's sin more than he loves his savior. 😢

As a Believer, start giving in and celebrating sin by doing it just this once and you most definitely lose ground, and place yourself in very dangerous territory. If you shut down your conscience, You set yourself up for more falling away, and you won't have the power to resist it. You either LEARN what God has to teach you from it THROUGH YOUR REPENTANCE, and return to His protection, or suffer the consequences. God HATES sin, and will judge it. He is extremely loving, kind, patient "toward the righteous He shows Himself righteous" and He is also perfectly just, and will reward good and evil accordingly.

Wow! That’s a serious way to put it- “he loves his son’s sin more than he loves his Savior!” That’s very sobering and true. I don’t want to do that in regard to my son’s transgenderism and “marriage” to my daughter in law.
