For all my fellow Christians who want to take Jimmy Carter at face value and that he was a born again Christian. The fruit of his life reveal something quite different both while in office and out of office. Just because you attend church or teach Sunday school does not mean you are a Christian any more than a cat having her kittens in an oven makes them muffins. The fruit reveals whether the tree was good or evil.

I agree. And many people forget, that he renounced the Southern Baptist Convention, because they would not affirm same sex marriage; yet he continued to "teach," Sunday school ? He was not teaching what the Bible says about homosexuality and also, when Donald Trump was elected in 2016, he went on record, along with Hillary Clinton, in protesting the results and saying that Trump was an illegitimate president. My other issues, were that he sold the Panama Canal and he signed the Airline Deregulation Act, which set off merger--mania, the wave of corporate pirates like C.Edward Acker, Carl Icahn, Alfred Checchi and Frank Lorenzo. took down some of our greatest air carriers like Pan Am, TWA, Ozark, North Central, Southern Airways, Hughes Air West, Eastern, Continental, Texas International and PeoplExpress. Some of that chaos in the airline business, can still be felt today . He's dead but sorry, I can't bring myself to shed a tear for him. He helped set this country on a destructive path, which Biden and Harris seem intent on finishing.😮

I agree. The man turned his back on the Southern Baptist Convention, when they refused to honor same sex marriage, yet he continued to "teach" Sunday school ? What Bible was he teaching ? Jesus said in the New Testament, "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord, will enter into the Kingdom of heaven but only those who do the will of my father in heaven. Many will say to me; Lord, Lord have we not prophesied in your name? Cast out demons in your name? And done many wonderful works in your name? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you,depart from me,you who practice iniquity". (Matthew chapter 7 verses 21-23). A person can call themselves a Christian, but how they conducted their life, can tell a different story. Many of his policies ruined this country and we're still feeling the pain in 2025. Sorry, but I can't bring myself to mourn for him.

Great show, Becket, I graduated high school in 1973, so I lived through the 70's. So much of the reason I was able to begin to live as openly gay was the exceptance that began to be fashionable in society. When I read Carter's statements about gay marriage I had the same gut wrenching feeling you expressed, Becket. How many have been led into Hell by these "loving" affirmations of homosexuality. Keep up the excellent work!!

Still on this journey of religion myself... if you don't mind me asking, if it's ok with you... how is this experience with you now in the 2020's, after being "openly gay" in the 1970's? Still gay? Still experiencing SSA, but still committed to Christ? Or not SSA anymore? I promise, I won't judge you. God bless.

I was so sad when "Imagine" was John Lennon was played at First Lady Rosalynn Carter's funeral. A funeral is an opportunity to preach gospel that saves people from Hell, as opposed to singing "no Hell to die for".

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. What I originally thought is that actually she wanted "I can only imagine," a totally different view, and that her children had misunderstood her wishes in this regard. But nope, a repeat today at President Carter's DC service! How ironic that such a hopeLESS song ("Imagine") would be played while also hopeFULLY assuming that Jimmy and Rosalynn were "together now" (where???).

I don’t think a funeral is an appropriate venue to be warning people about Hell. It’s a place to talk about how to get to heaven, the importance of knowing Jesus, and the shortness of the time we have, sure. But trying to scare people with words about Hell in a time of loss and grief does not seem fruitful or kind.
@timyoder2541

@Andreamom001 I don't think anyone is talking about scaring people about hell at a funeral service, but I do know and believe that it is a totally appropriate place to preach the Gospel. My Mother died last year and one of her instructions concerning her funeral was that the message of Christ's redemptive work on the cross was spoken.

The scriptures do not say that. The scriptures say that none of us are good, according to our Lord's standards. That why we have to rely on Him and pray for his forgiveness. This is a very basic explanation, but also very truthful and easy to understand.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Romans 3:23 says "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Also, Romans 3:10 "There is no one righteous, not even one;.."Also, Ephesians 2: 8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast." My prayer is that Jimmy Carter knew the grace of God. He did many works. As Christians, our works should be as a result of God's saving grace in our lives. @@emagreene9775

@leenieledejo6849 2 күн бұрын
@@emagreene9775Firstly that's not what the comment says. You need to read it again. Secondly, please spend your time in the Bible and not listening to men because Scripture does NOT say "none of us are good". The passage you are referring to (in Romans 3) is *ONE* passage that a) cannot be used as doctrine because one sole passage can *never* be used as doctrine and b) should be read in its immediate context and in the context of Romans as a whole and the New Testament as a whole. What does its immediate context tell us? That Paul is referring to PAGAN, PRE-CHRISTIAN Gentiles. He is NOT even talking about Old Covenant believers, never mind regenerate Christians. He also quotes two or three Psalms in that passage and if you read these psalms, you will see that they refer to "the unGodly" and "fools". There are numerous Old Covenant believers who are described as δίκαιοι (dikaioi) meaning "righteous" eg. Elizabeth and Zacharias, Joseph (husband of Mary), Simeon, John the Baptist and Lot (in 2 Peter 2:8). Just do a word study of δίκαιοι (dikaioi). [Sometimes unscrupulous, agenda-driven translations translate it as "just" or "devout" but it means "righteous"]. Furthermore, Job is described as "upright" and "blameless". Noah is obedient. The list goes on. All these people were "above reproach" according to God's standard at the time/the Law. God didn't send his son to suffer and die in order to make us worse than the lost world, the same as the lost world or just as upright as the righteous under the Old Covenant. He sent his son to suffer, die and rise again so that we could be FREE FROM SIN (John 8:34-36, Romans 6), FREE from the power of Satan (1st John chapter 3, Acts 26:18, 2 Timothy 2:26), CLEANSED of all past sin and able to walk in righteousness (not just according to the law set in stone but *in the steps of* Jesus - 1 Peter 2:21 - IMITATING him: 1st Corinthians 11:1). That's what he's talking about in the Sermon on the Mount. That's the new standard which those who trust in him most certainly CAN reach by the power of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, Romans 8:9) which Old Covenant believers did not have indwelling. Anyone calling themselves "Christian" who does not believe that the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead has the power to transform hearts so that they love righteousness and see sin as poison to be avoided at all costs, is walking just as an UNbeliever and God will see them as an unbeliever. Only the unregenerate (i.e not born again/born of the Spirit and so not Christian by definition: John 1:12-13, Romans 8:9) continue in sin according to 1st John chapter 3 and they do so because they don't believe that the way of Jesus is best and they want to put self first (the root of sin according to Romans 13:8-10).

@gypsyroverontheroadintheword The Carters were NOT Christians, but rather WERE a Freemason and an Eastern Star (female mason). Meaning they were secret society satanists at their core. Know that Babylonian Pharisaism = Judaism = Freemasonry, all three being the same religion going by different names throughout history. If by 2025, you don't know that freemasons have been ruling the world for the last 250 years, then you don't know ONE THING. And it's biblical folks. "MYSTERY BABYLON" IS FREEMASONRY, like it or not. The bible is a TREATISE against the secret societies. Isaiah 5:20 directly addresses the masonic adage, "Evil is good and good is evil." Isaiah 5:20-24, "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! v21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight v22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: v23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! v24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. v25 Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against His people, and He hath stretched forth His hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still." The Reagans were also a HUGE mason and eastern star. This guy is an idiot and doesn't know squat. Did not Jesus say, "Do not be deceived?" Lastly, the masons have been running the so-called Christian churches for over 150 years. ITS WHY AMERICA'S CHURCHES ARE APOSTATE.

My dad despised him. I remember my dad watching Jimmy’s televised Oval Office speeches and he’d get so aggravated that he couldn’t watch them until the end. On the other hand my dad adored Reagan. I miss the Reagan years. 🇺🇸 Reagan was so patriotic and positive. He was the opposite of the divisive leadership we have now. Becket, we were on the same page as far as Nancy Reagan goes. I was thinking the same thing about Nancy regularly consulting with astrologers. Speaking of Jane Wyman I’ve been binge watching Falcon Crest on Amazon Prime Video. There isn’t much I can watch these days on television, so I sometimes resort to older shows. Falcon Crest wasn’t G rated, but by today’s standards it certainly was. What’s happening in California is by design. It’s such a tragedy. May the Lord use it to draw people to Him. I hope many evangelicals are out walking in that area and preaching the gospel. Many will be open to hearing it having lost almost everything and wanting answers. Many of them were so close to losing their lives. "Imagine" that !!! A Christian wanting a song written by an atheist, drug using, adulterer at his funeral. A song saying " imagine there is no heaven". 🫣 What in the world? Sorry, but the thought that there is heaven, motivates me everyday. This lost world is crazy.

What a great discussion! Discussing Carter and Regan kindly, respectfully, but honestly and shrewdly. I love the balance of respect and analysis. It takes some real discernment to see what is actually happening vs. talking points and posturing. As Jesus would say,."You will know them by their fruits."

I was a teenager in the 1970's, and I remember how seductive, spiritually, many ideas and philosophies that were swirling around in the ether felt then - it was a worldwide shift. Young, inexperienced and näive people like myself thought these were 'new' ideas, but I have since learned they went far back; some were quite ancient. Over time, we have seen how endorsing them spawned even more rebellion and - gag - it's gotten really bad.. I don't even think Carter understood the gravity in supporting certain of those ideas, nor what their longterm effects would be. It was like a wave that so many of us caught on to, and thought we were so cool. It was like the fairy tale of The Pied Piper - there's even a song from that period ('60's-'70's) that goes, "I'm the Pied Piper🎶"- and just like the old fairy tale, the children - we children - were led astray - and musicians were writing the songs which carried these more loose ideas along, and many parents then (sigh) just felt helpless to deal with our - theft, really.

In 1978, my little daughter and I were on a march called The Longest Walk, where Native Americans walked from California to Washington DC. Carter left the country when we came close. Then later, on a friend's radio, we heard; " The President has just met with the Indians! " But we found out that they were really boy scouts dressed up. When it came time to leave Washington DC, the money for us to get home became readily available.

Carter has made comments about not taking the Bible literally, which definitely does not align with being a Christian. Plus, his negative views against the Jewish land, which God gave to His people, sends up red flags. God will decide on the end, but it doesn't look good based on comments and philosophies he's taken

I remember an interview in which the interviewer challenged Carter about something, I don't remember what, based on the Bible. Carter, with a smile: "I don't agree with St Paul about that." My mother, who was a believer but was very shy, introverted, and sweet, was indignant, disgusted, even. Absolutely disgusted. She had voted for Carter in 1976, and so had I. I remember that when Carter said it, I was just stunned.

For Southern Baptists, Jimmy Carter was a divisive figure. Some discerned his drift toward "progressive Christianity." His mother, Lillian Carter, also expressed unconventional religious views. However, "Miss Lillian" gained admirers when she joined the Peace Corp, serving her two years in -- was it in South/Central America ...??

I remember Carter running for president - the down-home peanut farmer with a daughter, Amy. I was just a little kid. I remember big yellow ribbons tied on trees, a parade around the Fourth of July, and people singing “Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the old oak tree…”. My dad had already come home and had been buried 7 years before. He was killed in a war he didn’t want to be in. But back to Jimmy Carter…. We left the country that summer, before the election, so I was gone for all of Carter’s term in office. I have had a bad feeling about him for most of my life. I have heard things here and there and knew I disagreed with him on significant issues, but it was interesting to hear some details of what he said and did. It is appalling to hear this, but I guess really not surprising. Thanks for inviting this man on.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember those yellow ribbons, and all the kids on my school bus singing that song as we drove past them. I remember my babysitter's brother coming home from Vietnam. I work with a guy who's father was part of Carter's state police security team when he was governor. His dad had nothing nice to say about Carter. He said he had a public persona but once the camera's were off he was mean and vindictive to people. He is definitely in part a media creation of the time and they have continued it the remainder of his life. His wife was associated with the Peoples Temple (Jim Jones), his daughter smoked pot in the white house. Morale in the military during that time was abysmal and the military didn't have fuel or parts to operate. I came into the Navy in the 80s and heard lots of stories about how bad it was during the Carter admin. He was a terrible president and his personality apparently ddin't match his public persona. Kinda sad actually.

😢Hi Becket, love your podcast. I love your selection of guests and topics. I am 67 years old and a Chemist and trivia hobbiest. The number of hostages was 52. I knew it around 50 so when I heard your guest guess that it was 400 some odd I knew that was wrong. It was 444 days so that's where the mixup was. Love your show but I am now a Judge and so I like to hear the truth, the whole, and nothing but the truth! Seriously if you need a proof reader and fact checker. I volunteer. I was a reviewer of technical papers when I was a a Chemist and I am a history buff so I detected a few other historical mistakes in previous episodes but I didn't write them down. Not many mistakes and most don't change the gist of the episodes but for accuracy sake it might help maintain your credibility to higher degree. I reiterate you are doing a great job and the episode was very accurate on Carter. Thank you for how you are serving God. I praise God for you and pray for blessings on you and your ministry.

Reagan was the first president I was old enough to vote for. As a young Christian from the South, I knew Reagan was the real deal every time I heard him speak. Carter was weak as a leader. Plus, Reagan had a Godly vision for America, which he sought by peace through strength. He knew what it meant to be a conservative American, he was humble, yet ready to fight when needed. I will always thank the Lord for giving us Reagan.

I believe we can’t discount Rosalyn’s influence on his policies. She always sounded much more liberal than Jimmy was. They were the first modern political couple like the Clinton’s when you elected the man you got the woman too. I also had the impression after Carter was out of office he got in the way by inserting himself into international affairs.

Both Ron and Nancy heavily relied on astrology and regularly consulted the magic arts to guide their lives and decisions. Don't know if it was mostly Nancy, but this has been what I've heard and observed about them. I just don't feel that there has been that many presidents that were truly born again. Abraham Lincoln is the only one I know of that spoke about the 'Living God' and used God's Word to guide his presidency. Most were just conservative and believed in God, but didn't profess Jesus to be the one and only savior. This being said, I still would recognize Reagan and some others to be honorable and upright rulers of our Nation 🙌

I will say it if nobody else will, He was absolutely awful and showed no christian conviction on any level. He was for the Palestinians and totally against Israel. No real christian with any knowledge of the scriptures could take that attitude. I remember the Iranian hostage crisis well and it was if all America was a hostage and we were viewed as weak and helpless. He doesnt deserve all the praise he is getting and I doubt he is getting any where he is right now.
