Some context/explanation for those who have not seen episode *[LD 1x07 - "Much Ado About Boimler"]* in its entirety, &/or may not understand why Mariner is acting uncharacteristically incompetent with this video/scene... *;)* 1. *_Ramsey's 'angle'_** ~* Captain Amina Ramsey (Toks Olagundoye) _purposefully_ took-up the dull assignment of "babysitting" the USS Cerritos, with the ulterior motive to poach Mariner over to the USS Oakland and make Mariner her XO (Executive Officer) there. However, Ramsey did this with *_GOOD_* intentions, stemming from their close Friendship. From Ramsey's perspective, she could not understand Mariner's inexplicable loss of career-drive and -ambition after earning top-marks at Starfleet Academy, as well as helping Ramsey and many others of their class excel; something which led to Ramsey's own Captaincy. Simply put, Ramsey was trying to help her friend Mariner, *_"get back on track"._* 2. *_Mariner's (counter-)'angle'_** ~* However, Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) *_KNOWS_* of Ramsey's ulterior motive (or more accurately, figures it out very early-on) of Ramsey trying to set-up Mariner to become XO of the USS Oakland (a job that Mariner does not want); but also knows it is earnestly well-intentioned. So Mariner is deliberately acting uncharacteristically incompetent ("taking a dive") as a counter-effort against Ramsey's agenda. Mariner knows that *_>Captain

@@Stingra87 *& @EdibleNonsense ~* Or, a possible episode plot would be that Boimler gets promoted because of: - a.) *Circumstance(s) ~* _["Something"]_ occurs and Boimler is simply in the right place, at the right time, and with a very large dose of sheer dumb luck. - b.) *Hidden Agenda ~* Captain Freeman (mom) &/or Admiral Mariner(?) (dad) promote Boimler, in an attempt to force Mariner to seek an promotion as well, in order to keep-up and continue to be Boimler's Mentor. Or some other ['Antagonist Character'] has Boimler promoted for some Hidden Agenda &/or Ulterior Motive. The counter-plot would be that Mariner knows Boimler is *NOT* yet ready to be an Officer; however, _not_ because of incompetence or even personal fondness, but rather Boimler lacking the maturity/wisdom, and the field-experience, to be a *'good'* Officer on his desired path to the Captain's Chair. The drama would be that Boimler misunderstands Mariner's well-meaning intentions and is resentful of her as a result. Likewise, the (premature) promotion quickly goes to Boimler's head, leading to Boimler acting like a jackass among his friends and all other Lower Decks crew; which, of course, reinforces Mariner's point/belief that Boimler is not yet ready for Officer-ship (-hood?).

Well this makes her even worse then. So she is acting incompetent on purpose. She really doesn't have any reason to.
@pendrake404 жыл бұрын
@@TommyRayzer ~ As said in my initial Comment, Mariner _does not want_ to be the USS Oakland XO. However, this is complicated by two hindering factors preventing Mariner making an outright rejection to Ramsey... - a.) Mariner is trying to spare her friend Ramsey of any hurt &/or resentful feelings between the two close friends. Mariner would rather have Ramsey think Mariner a 'klutz' (but still a friend) than an ingrate (friendship broken). - b.) Mariner is also afraid she may not be able to refuse Ramsey (due to their close Friendship) if a direct offer (rather than Ramsey's manipulative method) is made; which would put Mariner in an unhappy and resentful position _("If I were rank-up for anyone, it would be for you.")._ So Mariner is trying to avoid such a confrontation.

It is also very endangered, with most of the species being located in and around Mexico City, which is a heavily populated and heavily polluted city. Axolotl are extremely sensitive about changes to their habitat, so all the water traffic and pollution has led to a mass die-off and there's conservation efforts going on to purify select areas so the population might have a chance to rebound. So yeah just wanted to point out the similarities between IRL stuff and what Mariner and the rest of the Away Team were doing on that bog planet.

Willowville Thanks. Lower Decks started off on a bad note and I thought it would take a while to get its footing. But nope. As the episodes are rolled out, it’s actually gotten even worse. The thing is, even though it’s a Rick and Morty clone, Rick Sanchez is one of the best written characters when it comes to Adult Animation. Rick and Morty was a parody of Back to the Future but behind the humour, it was a lot deeper than people expected when it came to the characters and situations. Lower Decks felt like there was nothing underneath that surface of terrible comedy and emasculation (Hope Boimler’s luck improves) and this episode felt like it was about to breach that surface and show how Mariner’s behaviour and personality is actually harmful to everyone and not just Boimler. But nope. It turns out that she was faking it all along, thus making her character even more unlikeable. Now, I not only want her off the ship, I want her out of FRICKING STARFLEET FOR GOOD.

Er, Mariner, that is more than a bad joke, that is attempted murder, punished by prison time. 🤦🏼♀️🤨 Anyway, he never reported or punished her for that, despite still not knowing who her parents are, so he's either too forgiving or he has feelings for her... I'm beginning to feel sorry for him. I hope she only joked around to scare cpt Ramsey 's team, but I have a feeling she was telling the truth. Really, a scorpion in his bed? What is this, revenge or klingon courtship, lol ?! I would have put scratching powder on his weights or something like that, unpleasant and a good vengence, but not dangerous or criminal 😁. Mariner (and Ransom) need a lot of therapy with a competent psychiatrist, dr.Meeglemo is not enough, I think. A, and Mariner pretending to be incompetent to refuse her friend politely?! Really dumb and hurtfull for cpt Ramsey & her competent team. She should have mustered up the courage to tell her friend the truth about her not wanting to rank up yet, instead of making a fool of herself and sabotaging the team's mission. 🤦🏼♀️ I like Mariner, I used to be similar to her many years ago (well, I wasn't that unhinged), but sometimes she becomes unbearable...

And yet at the end of the episode (and most episodes where there is a risk of loss of life) Mariner has shown to be EXTREMELY competent as a Starfleet officer. She is able to take command in a crisis situation and figure out a solution to the problem just as quickly and efficiently as any of the 'hero' characters in the other shows. She's purposefully taking a dive here because she doesn't want the promotion, and the reason that she's not been fired from Starfleet is because he DAD is an ADMIRAL, which in Star Trek is the equivalent of a senator and thus she's most likely protected by him and his position. Really, you and others are just really reaching for ways to more or less say 'Mariner sucks, get rid of her'.
