Beckett Simonon Shoe Colours Guide: How To Best Match Your Ensemble
As our shoe colour guides are a popular feature on the Bespoke Unit website, we're covering the primary shoe colours in this video.
Firstly, we have Beckett Simonon's Valencia Wholecut in tan leather. This is a more casual colour especially suitable for the summer.
Next up is are the brown Yates brogues. This is darker than the previous tan, and thus a more formal colour. However, the large amount of adornment on the brogues means this is, again, casual pair of shoes overall.
In the middle of the table are the Hoyt double monk straps in black. Black is the most formal shoe colour; therefore, despite the buckles notching down the formality, these are quite formal.
Part of this is personal preference; Paul enjoys wearing his double monks in more formal occasions than they usually appear in.
After the Hoyt, we have the Leonard single monk in bordeaux. Double and single monk straps are more appropriate for different foot sizes.
For example, Paul wears US size 14e, while Charles-Philippe wears US size 9 to 9.5 and, therefore, prefers single monk straps.
In terms of formality, bordeaux is quite versatile, since it's a deep & rich colour. It's not as formal as black, but can go with a suit or jeans equally well.
At the end of the table is the brown Dunham derby with a moccasin toe in pebble grain leather. The adornments and texture alongside the brown color place this in the more casual range. This would be a good shoe to wear with a sport coat suit.
Because both dress shoes and belts are typically leather, their colours should match. When buying shoes, it's a good idea to keep the belts you have in mind, and vice versa.
But if, like Paul and CP, you primarily wear braces rather than belts, this is less of an issue. Braces are more of an underwear item, as they're not visible while wearing your suit, since they're under the jacket.

As an aside, braces are suspenders in American English, but don't use the term "suspenders" for them in the UK. On that side of the pond, "suspenders" refers to the women's clothing item that Americans call "garter belts."

I just found your video and loved it! I normally wear wide sizes (EE I believe). Would the double monk work better with a wider foot than the single monk? Also, how is the sizing? Is it tighter than expected or looser? Thanks for the video!

What would be the best becket Simonon shoe I should get in Bordeaux color for both work/formal wear and casual? I like the Yates but worried about too much brogueing. Would the monk straps be a safer bet? Thank you.

Hi Nirav, My favourite Beckett Simonon shoe is the Leonard single monk strap in burgundy. They're very versatile and easy to wear with both a suit and jeans. In fact, I'm wearing them right now as I took them with me on a visit to the UK. I'm travelling light with a suit and some casual outfits and the Leonards have served me wonderfully! Best, CP
