I started this video the morning of my double mastectomy and it finishes 2 weeks later into my recovery. I had this done as preventative surgery as I have the BRCA2 gene mutation. Thanks for all the kindness and support so far - I really wanted to document my journey in case it might help others in the future, so here it is!

I have the BRCA2 mutation and will be having my preventative surgery on Feb 7. Thanks for posting this! I’m getting nervous and starting to question my decision, but I know that I will be thankful once it’s over and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have this as a preventative measure. Hugs to everyone else going through this too ❤

I'm almost 3 weeks post surgery after my double mastectomy. I elected to have both removed. Even though I had cancer in my right breast only. 16 years ago I had calcification cells removed from my right breast that hadn't become cancer yet at that time. I'm 63 now and I have been having yearly mammograms since my mom had her mastectomy in 1995. This time they found cancer in that breast. I went through the surgery on March 14, 2023. I didn't know if the cancer had gone to my lymph nodes till I woke up from the surgery. And didn't find that out that I didn't have any in my lymph nodes till I talked to the surgeon the next morning. They inserted a radioactive isotope in my right breast about 2 hours before my surgery. Then they shoot blue dye in me after I'm out having the surgery. The pain meds I was given sucked. The drain tubes hurt the whole time they were in. They were in 8 days. And the incisions were alot longer than I thought they were going to be. They go from the side of my back where my arm ends by my back around to the middle of my chest. With an inch that isn't cut between where the breasts were to the other side where my back starts. I have to say that where the breasts were doesn't really hurt. Its mostly numb. The area under my arms, the incision is about 4 inches below my armpits. That is where it is really sore and tender. Now I'm dealing with nerve pain not incision pain. And I found that tiger balm has really helped give me relief from the nerve pain. I wasn't really told that the pain would be this much. And they told me they had good drugs that they would give me. That was a lie, I think they were sugar pills. I am glad my breasts are gone. Now I don't have to worry anymore about mammograms or breast cancer. Not having reconstruction. Not ever wearing a bra again. It will be nice to not have back and neck pain from large breasts. No more sweating and prickly heat rash under them during the summer anymore either. Not mourning the loss of them at all. Looking forward to being flat chested for the rest of my life. I'm just so glad that I was told I'm cancer free! And didn't have to do radiation or chemo. Thank God for that.

@elinabalt7716 it was the so called pain med after surgery. They did nothing. The pills they give you do nothing for the nerve pain you have after they take the breasts off. But I finally found a homeopathic nerve pain relief pill at my local natural grocers. It really helped. I have been taking them now for my sciatica nerve pain that I have been experiencing. And it stops that nerve pain too. Also I used tiger balm on both sides of my incision after my surgery and that helped my pain and numbness. Hope these help you.

Great to see you you are so strong, and being so tired after going out is normal, I learnt that all the afternoon sleeps i needed was my body needing downtime to regenerate along the recovery, (not same op, but big op for facial tumour). Keep being in tune with what your body needs don’t put pressure on yourself, or you will be disappointed with yourself so do allow yourself to sleep it is so so important. I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction 8 years ago because I had breast cancer stage 3. Go steady and take time out and be kind for yourself! @@rruiz4145 thanks for sharing your story with me. I'm privileged 😊 It is not an easy journey after surgery and you must listen to your body. Remember this is a big surgery!!! Try and get physically active now, if not already. I say this because it really helps with post recovery and I was advised by my breast surgeon. He was right! Prepare to get support for your beautiful little ones as you will need recovery time. You will be unable to do simple tasks like vacuuming or cleaning windows after surgery and for a few months. Do everything slower and build up to physical activity. I hope you will have supportive friends and family to talk to about all of it. My two boys are now two young men aged 17 and 19.5. I focused on my children to get me through it all. It has been 12 years in July since my surgery. You can do this and I know you are a strong lady! 💪 I'm here If you ever want to chat. Remember, we have already beat the "beast" of cancer! Please keep me posted. GOOD LUCK AND YOU'VE GOT THIS!!! 😘 😊

Goodness! You are so brave and strong, Becky. It seems to me that you had a lot to deal with after being sent home so quickly. I had a breast reduction 8 years ago and was in hospital for 3 nights following. I was so grateful to have been there, too. I had numbness for a couple of months afterwards, but most of my feeling did finally return, so it is early days. Also, I was told that feelings of upset are normal due to the fact that you've had radical surgery, but also because your hormones take a while to normalize, so there's no need to justify it at all. Wishing you all the best xox

I am just going to be me and a lot better physically and mentally. I had genetic testing and was negative for the BRAC2. Actually I had 36 different things checked and everything was negative. @@wandah9468 yes. I didn’t even cry until literally right before. But not really cry, I just let a couple of tears go. At the hospital. Afterwards, it’s just an adjustment. Two blood clots in my lung prevented me from finishing reconstructive surgery because of blood thinners. But hopefully by the summer. The nerve damage and phantom pain was the worst. In my personal opinion, the mastectomy was much easier than the chemotherapy! I’m done with that now too! Cancer free! It was all worth it! Good luck to you! 🫶🏽💐

I’ve been watching your story with interest. I also have the brca2 mutation and am awaiting BPM with reconstruction, although I’m a little older than you at 48. It’s good to see the raw truth and that actually after two weeks you’re looking great and are able to move around a little. Thanks for this Becky and for all that you’re doing to raise awareness, there’s not a lot out there xxx

I’m five weeks post op this week after my double mastectomy. (No reconstruction). Definitely started feeling more normal after week 3 was done. Videos like this helped me know what to expect. Naps were my friend. Slept horribly those first three weeks.

Sleeping on your back sucks! I couldn’t wait to sleep on my side , front took a lot longer but then I don’t tend to sleep on my front anyway. You seem to be looking pretty good despite the major surgery. Having your hair washed feels amazing doesn’t it, my sister was staying and did mine for me, makes a big difference to how you feel 👍🏻

I'm so glad I found this video! A friend works for your publisher and mentioned you've been posting about your double mastectomy journey. I have the BRCA1 mutation and have been planning a double mastectomy with reconstruction for a year(ish). I found out on Wednesday that my surgery is 9th of July! This video has really helped prepare me mentally and practically and your scar video has made me feel so positive to see you looking so well and healed at only 3 weeks. I'm definitely going to get my partner to watch these videos to prepare him as well. So thank you so much for posting this and being so open and honest. I'm feeling much more calm and zen 😂 Best wishes for your ongoing recovery, I'll be thinking of you xx

Hi Becky, I'm pleased the operation went well. You are such a brave and inspirational lady. Its easy to think why me, something I've done as new illness have presented themselves on top of IBS and food intolerance. I have EDS and bad days can get you down and i will use your upbeat positive attitude to slap myself out of my sorrowful pit 😁 I wish you a speedy recovery and many well wishes. Good luck to Marc with the cooking responsibility, get him trying some new cooking skills. X

Thank you for sharing. I tested positive for BRCA1 gene and I will be having preventative surgery too. I have so many mixed feelings and I've felt alone in so many areas. I tend to worry about others feelings versus processing my own. I'm grateful to 'take control to have this' but I'm also a bit angry..confused..sad..scared. so much. If I view it from the outside looking in..i can process it and make sense of it ...but when I see it from my perspective...I feel a Rollercoaster of emotions.

Becky, I can't POSSIBLY TELL YOU how this video, your charming charisma & most positive outlook has helped me. I didn't know my daughter was having double mastectomy until she phoned after surgery 2 days ago. They had not wanted me to worry before hand. I'm sure she's sleeping off meds & allowing body to repair. Only getting a couple of very brief texts has left me knowing next to nothing about what to expect. You've been an absolute lifesaver. I feel so encouraged. Your bubbly spirit is awesome. My daughter is married to an angel just like yours, so I know she's in good hands. Thank you a million times over & over for so generously sharing your journey. I no longer feel destroyed by grief. I send best wishes from New Orleans, USA . You never mentioned reconstruction here. I know my daughter is planning for it relatively soon. Wish I knew if you have done it & your feelings about it. I don't have Instagram unfortunately. Cheers darling precious girl w forever gratitude. . 😊❤

I first got breast cancer in 2014 had a double mastectomy with implants but one failed then I waited 2 yrs for reconstruction but that had issues. 2018 I got breast cancer again and had the lump n lymph nodes removed I was doing great then end of September 2023 I got breast cancer again, I only had reconstructive surgery 2yrs earlier now I’d got cancer. This time I was given a choice have the lump removed or have the breast removed. Due to a family history I opted for a double mastectomy and will go flat. This will be the first time without breast since I first got them around age of 12. I want them gone I want the cancer gone I don’t want to be worried every time I get to 4.5 yrs or 5yrs clear will it come back. This time it has messed with my hear and Iv struggled but now I’m ok with going flat so many nice bras I can be what size I want n in time tattooed If you get a mastectomy and want reconstructive surgery ask the risks of getting the cancer returning because if I had known that I would get it back 2 more times I might have thought again. Everyone is different I’m not saying it’s going to be easy not seeing breast at 57 but the option was lump removed or breast how many times could the cancer come back for my sanity removing them both was my best option for me. Good luck with your choices consider them and ask questions before you decide. I slept weeks on my back, it’s funny your body tells you when you can turn as you get better your body changes. My hairdresser used to just wash my hair, hubby would take me in drains were still in but washing your hair makes you feel much better.
seeing my scars for the first time (after my double mastectomy) 💜
