Becky, this was very informative! Considering the wind, convenience, air circulation in the henhouse...all those aspects clearly guided the changes you and Marie made. I agree about the pan, or crock of water. Decades ago, my chickens enjoyed taking generous drinks from our somewhat flat ceramic bowl. I added well-cleaned rocks to the bowl when our chicks hatched to prevent drowning (we lost one chick). The rocks did the trick, providing the chicks with safe footing if they accidentally hopped in. It's all in the details, isn't it.
@lindakrause87932 жыл бұрын
Hey, speaking of flat ceramic bowl, I once bought one that would be perfect! I found it with pottery in amongst the pots and vases for flowers or vegetables. I think its purpose was to plant a cactus garden; at least that's what I used it for. It's probably 8-10" across by 2 1/2-3" tall. Amazingly, there is a lip on the bowl that is about 3/4" wide. Perfect!!!

I love these coop check ups❤❤ I don't think I could work with the owner there though. Some folks too dang picky. Get a good idea of what they want and they need to let you do your job. I loved that you did the roost up in the corner because if the chickens were using only one probably that top one then they liked being up a little higher so now they have 3 high roosts. ❤❤ I'm with you on the nesting boxes as well. They liked the covered ones more from what I seen. Mine never used the open one. I should've built mine like a shed so I could walk in instead of having to climb in but I was limited on wood and supplies because there was a all time high on lumber at the time so a friend was remodeling and was just throwing away perfectly good wood so I came and got most of it and built a coop with a n almost 20ft run 8ft wide and can walk into the run as I made it tall enough so I could walk in. I get my eggs from the back with doors but I've figured out my hens lay in the mornings by 10 or 11 am they are done so I don't check till normally in the evening. Mine even talk to me when they want back in to lay since they free range during the day an makes this growing noise. I almost know all my chickens calls and what they mean. I spend alot of time with them and love it. It's like meditation for me.

I love everything there is, even including the work needed! I have decided that if I live, and the Lord agrees, I'm going to have some chickens!!! Becky says start with 2 and I will give that a lot of thought (I want about 6 and may try to talk to her about it)! God bless you and your chickens!!!

My question is, should I put some 1/2" welded wire over top the chicken wire since we have snakes and live close to the woods. Hi Becky, Thank you for allyour videos. Can you tell us how (if at all) we can help a lone 4-mo. old chicken in our backyard flock? Her “sister” recently died from our Arizona heat, and now our 3 adult hens (including “mom”) won’t have anything to do with the remaining young’un, bully her, etc. The two “siblings” were thick as thieves, and the survivor is so ostracized now. This all started innocently enough with 3 fertilized eggs from a neighbor’s flock and a broody hen of ours. One egg disappeared(!), the other two hatched…and then there was one. But I can’t imagine we can go out and simply buy the surviving “chick” another playmate(s); rather, I’m guessing we’d wind up with an even more stratified “flock.” It’s just sad. We’ve since learned a lot about the heat tolerance of Black Australorp chickens, and this won’t happen again. Thank you!
