I was raised on a farm. My grandma always said, put the young 'hens' in the hen house after the older hens have 'gone to bed' (in the dark) and when the older hens wake up in the morning, not being the brightest of creatures, the older gals simply assume the younger hens 'have been there all along' and it's no problem. Always worked. Of course, we also made sure there was plenty of food/water stations, and ample room for all their feather butts.

Old timers used to do things a lot different than we do now they basically get a bunch of new chickens and just toss them in with the new ones and let them sort it out. they will they'll be a fair amount of fighting normally though but it usually takes a few days and they get the pecking order straightened out.

Becky, I have been raising 12 chickens for about 6 months now and I have gotten so much helpful information from your channel...thank you so much...I never would have guessed how much joy raising chickens could be...I am raising mine for eggs only I buy my meat chickens already butchered from a local farm that free ranges with no antibiotics or soy...I love the little dog sitting there waiting for a treat while you are treating the chickens. he or she is so cute...I have a couple of Leghorns in my small flock but your Leghorns are much bigger than mine, and that Leghorn rooster is massive, I never knew they could get so big, I don't think there is a Hawk in his right mind that would mess with that guy...The funny thing about one of the Leghorns that I named Dakota is that she is the smallest of all my chickens and she lays the biggest eggs and has gotten several double yokes from her...Thanks again for all the good info!!!

This is some great tips! I let my little ones live in a cage inside of the hen house when they were like 1 month old. So they got to know each other through a net. Then I let them out under super vision for shorter amounts of time. Now they are together but the "teenagers" hangs in their own gang, the original gang is for them selfs and the two oldies also have a club for them selfes! Haha. Chickens are great! I have two orphaned jungle foul chicks (small breed like a bantam) that are a few weeks old I need to integrate into my flock as soon as they are feathered. It’s winter here in Alaska, so they probably won’t be free ranging in a few weeks when the snow gets deeper. I’m thinking I’ll slip them in at night when everyone is sleeping. But, I’m nervous about incorporating these two small babes in with the other, including two 9 week olds that are feisty and still with mama. I’m also contemplating slipping them in with mama hen, but she has a baby cockerel who is a confrontational thing.

I have been introducing my young ones to my flock this past week. They are doing well. For the most part the chickens and guineas are coming into the territory of the younger ones. Yesterday I left the door open between them and left them for the first time. Went out in a little bit and they were getting along. I have a barred rock that likes to show them who is boss but she is not overdoing it. I also have a cockerel that was being naughty to the rest of the young ones. He is pretty big so I put him with the chickens and guineas for a while. He came back not mistreated but calmed down greatly. He was relieved to be back home! They are so much fun!

Also, can you show how to treat a chick with a bad leg “splayed leg”? I hatched out chicks from an incubator, and one came out with a splayed or maybe a broken leg. I tried to put it back in place and let it heal, but instead the foot part of that leg died off and had no movement, so we decided to amputate that leg. It went so well, she or he is now 3 weeks old and hopping along to eat and drink no problem. I named it PATITA, little leg in Spanish. Lol

I have 5, 8-9 week old chicks. Most are getting close in size to the big ladies but there is one smaller Silver Hamburg that I can already tell is a target. Chased and pecked. Possibly the color difference has her targeted as well? Will have to keep her separate for a bit longer! Do you recommend gradual introductions, like an hour or so a day, or just throw them out there all at once? They have their own separate coop inside the run so they have been able to see eachother for a few weeks now. Thanks for sharing your chicken wisdom! ☺️🐣🐥🐓

I just introduced my new 6 to my older 5. I removed the older rooster the 5 because he was huge and would have bullied the new birds. So the younger rooster was able to assist the transition. They’ve lived side by side for months so they’ve seen each other but couldn’t get to each other. They appear to have kept to their separate social groups. How long do you think it will be before they intermingle?
@DracoTheDragon3 жыл бұрын
I had a friend that introduced small hens to his to originals. They always stayed separate. The older ones eventually died. So I think it depends on the chicken but they might never intermingle. I hope this helps.

You make introducing chickens into a flock sound easy. But there are some things that can go wrong, as you pointed out. I had to find out some of the steps by myself. I had one of my hens brood eggs. Two chickens hatched (yeah, I know, only two). When the chickens were little they kept slipping through the net and going outside the run so I let the broody hen and the chickens free range. The chickens and the hen had a space for sleeping just for themselves. A few weeks ago, the hen stopped brooding and I noticed the chickens started to get bullied. So, I let the chickens out each morning (they cannot slip through the net anymore) and free range them. They have their own food and water. The chickens join the hens later in the afternoon when I let the hens free range as well. At dusk, the chickens with the hens go to sleep in the same coop. There are not noises coming from the coop so I think the chickens do not get bullied at bedtime. The roost can accomodate ten hens. I have six. I know one of the chickens sleeps on the roost with the hens (on the opposite end) and the other chicken sleeps on the hardwood floor on the hey. Sadly, I cannot extend the roost or add another roost. I might have to build a new coop if I decide to hatch more chickens next year. I think I will stop free ranging the chickens during the day only after they grow to the same size as the hens. Your video confirmed this for me. Thank you very much, Becky.

We have middle-aged chickens and we put them in a smaller coop than the big ones, now we have a lot more chicks about 1-2 weeks old. When we tried to Introduced them to the middle-aged chickens about 5-6 weeks old they always Pecked them, (we have 8 5-6, 25 1-2 chicks) when we put the older middle-aged chicks in the little coop they don’t peck them. But when we put the small ones in the middle-aged coop they would jump, peck run off.

Thank you! I believe you have solved my problem. I have a dozen teenage chicks - hatched in March - who insist on roosting on my front porch. It doesn't take much brain power to imagine what my porch looks (and smells) like in the morning and the extra work it's causing me. I have tried putting one or two inside the coop after the big birds have gone to roost - two or three nights in a row - and it hasn't "stuck". They keep coming back to roost on my swing. So what I need to do is to put them in the run, not the coop, *before* the other older chickens go to roost, and they should follow them inside? Oh, how I hope you're right!

I have that problem with one of my hens. I tried for over a month to reintegrate her back into the group to no avail. I kept her for over a month in a small hospital coop. I finally built her her own house and run. She is able to free range daily with supervision. Her home is called Peppers Palace and is a 4X4 house with a 4x8 run. Half of the run is under the coop. Would it be possible to give her a room mate? She seems lonely during the day.
@BlueFox.Jerome5 жыл бұрын
Of course you can give her a roomate, choose a calm chicken. It's nice when 2 chickens are friends, they search little bugs together, they lay together in the grass. Chickens feel more comfortable if they are in a flock :)
