Becky, I want you to know that I always wanted to make my own soap. I was afraid to until I saw your soap videos. I got the courage to make my first batch (with my husband on stand by). Friends and neighbors wanted to try it, and after a short while I did start a small home business. I love to educate people about natural soap. Thank you Becky, for showing these videos. Annie

Thanks, Becky! I've got a recipe I love, but the ingredients are difficult to find, not to mention expensive. I'm going to try your recipe next time. I really like your relaxed approach. It takes the terror out of soap making which other videos portray. Yes, you can get burned, but women have been making soap for centuries. It's not nuclear science :-). It's fun!

I've been using this recipe with coconut oil since 2017 and I'm so thankful I found your video!! We love the soap and have since stopped buying any other soaps from stores! And yes goggles and gloves are a necessity when making this! Even a mask helps and outdoors if possible!

These (vegetable) oils are typically 3 fatty acids attached to a 3 carbon backbone of glycerin known as a triglyceride. The lye is typical a very strong base: sodium or potassium hydroxide, which in part is the same thing in crystals of the older versions of Drano (also, poisonous). This is why you always want to do as Becky warns to wear personal protective equipment (goggles and mask). I would add wearing latex or nitrile gloves for protection. This is very similar to making biodiesel fuel. This can be a lot of fun and a lot of properties may be added to these soaps. Some people add an abrasive material like coarse to fine salt, minerals, and even sugar to impart an exfoliating property. Exfoliation is a wonderful healthy concept that I learned from watching a lot of commercials growing up, believing this to be a girly thing. Exfoliation gets rid of dead skins cells that bacteria on the skin consider a smorgasbord. Bacteria waste production is one of the sources of BO (body odor). Commercial soaps have consumer protection built in to them to some degree. Read and follow all directions before handling any chemical. Olive oil is a chemical as much as lye and water. Why do you think there are so many waters being sold for 1000s times what water used to cost (turning the tap faucet on)? Chemicals have no feelings. Living things have feelings, expressions, and style. That is why I love Becky's outgoing, confident personality and gentle voice. Note: the dust or beads will immediately damage skin/hair/eyes (burn) on contact and ("eat holes" thru) clothing after washing even if you immediately brush off the dust or beads from hands or clothing. Notify a close friend immediately or call 911 if burning starts to occur and you are unsure of what to do. If your hands feel slippery immediately after handling the lye or lye dissolved in water. Always protect your eyes, mouth, and lungs when handling chemicals and cleaning. Sorry for the long comment...just the scientist in me coming out. I love your channel, Becky. I am way passed tired of the rat race, too.

Becky, you did a great service to share how easy soapmaking is to do at home. I, too, make my own soap at home as many thousands of women over the centuries who did not have goggles and gloves did. Don't let the OSHA-lovers bring you down girl--makin' soap is fun and easy if done with care and consideration of what you are working with.

good video. I like the flower mold too. good grief to all those who are so critical. I never wear gloves when I make my soap either. yes, safety is important and she does mention that. I have to disagree with the person who said it takes 6-8 months to cure. Curing just hardens the soap. Once the chemical reaction has taken place the lye is no longer lye. 3-4 weeks is plenty of time. Thanks for the video.

One day I am going to try to make the soap. I use to make laundry soap with Fels-Naptha soap and borax and some soda warsh. My daughter and I used it all the time and our top load washer. I don't know why I stopped it went great now that I have a front loader and you have to use h e soap I didn't use it in it I find a 5 gallon bucket downstairs. Afraid to use it being they cost almost $1,200 for a front loader I don't know if it's safe to use or not.

Hello Becky, I absolutely love the way you gave up the rat race, and I liked watching you video on your home made soap. The process you used is called Cold Process, or CP, and the kind of soap you made is called Castile, because it is pure olive oil. What I was wondering, is if you figured the lye for all of your olive oil soap, or if you reserved some of it for what we call Super fat. For example: if you use 50 oz of olive oil. You could figure in 95% of the olive oil as your base oils, to be turned into soap, and your lye amount, would be figured on that 95% of the olive oil. The other 5 % of your olive oil to be used as a Super Fat. This is an extra bit of olive oil, that is sure to stay on you skin to give you richness and a creamy feel. I am a soap maker myself, and this would be a suggestion I would have for you to do it this way. Your soaps all looked beautiful! I love the way that you did them.

Becky: I'm gonna LUV making my own soap! Your recipe is SO, SO easy!!!!Lots of comments from several years ago when the video was made so I'm *bumping* this video! I just finished making my FIRST batch!!!! It's all covered up with towels & blankets and tomorrow at 9p EST can't get here soon enough so that I can see how they turned out. I learned a few things with this: Practice colors! Swirling looked so easy until I tried it. I think I'll stick with layered colors for the time being ~~ It took almost 20 minutes for the lye solution to cool to 110F. Be patient, Grasshopper ~~ The mixture residue left on the blender was slathered on my feet and on my eczema spot ~~ A fresh manicure may cause a burning feeling if the mixture gets around the cuticle ~~ Use a deeper bowl. My bowl was too shallow for blending. That's it!

I've searched, but haven't found Becky making pine tar soap. What I like best about her videos, is that she stays simple. Look up other soap recipes and you see as many as 6 oils listed, with sundry other ingredients. Seldom do they tell you that if you add in one quadrant, you delete in another.Like, just dumping in a fragrance, may not be wise: soap could come out soft and stay that way for weeks after the cure stage. So, the question is, where do you reduce, water or oils to compensate for 2 to 3 ounces of fragrance or essential oils?
@recyclingmom10 жыл бұрын
I make soap for a living and for personal use and I know for a fact that 100% olive oil (Castile) soap does not trace in a few or even 20 minutes. You also have to be precise with the amount of fragrance oil use even more so if you use essential oil. Not all fragrance oils are created equal.

Good video but a matter of caution. The mask you had on won't protect you from those lye fumes, you need a much better mask with disposable filters. Harbor Freight carries one. P-95 for $16.00. Also keep windows/doors open if using the lye indoors, just because the lye isn't fuming anymore doesn't mean the vapors in the room won't hurt you. If you don' have an exhaust hood, then mix the lye/water outside and bring it inside when ready to pour. The other caution is wear plastic gloves.
@wandalazure22174 жыл бұрын
I'm making my third batch of soap and always mix my lye/water outside on the deck. It is the safest way. In most houses, we don't have the ventilation features that you need to keep from inhaling the fumes.

What you did not tell people is, once you make your own soap and start using it you will never want to use store bought soap again. I take my own soap if I travel. Now I am a man and I only add coconut oil to help it lather and a fragrance. My favorite is oatmeal, milk and honey, how it got that name I have no idea. As you know there are thousands of fragrances. I was checking some out at Starrville Soap Supply Co. once and they had one called dirt. Very strange and yes it smelled like ....dirt. not for me. I suppose you should use gloves. I never have. The mask to me is most important, you dont want to breathe those fumes. For me it is very difficult to use gloves and I know how hot the water and lard are going to get and I also know what that mixture will do to my skin. I am very careful and in 20 years never had an unpleasant experience. BUT, you really should wear goggles, a mask and gloves. Most important is be Careful! Be real Careful!

I noticed that the Lye bottle said "poison".....I would love to make homemade soap but that part worries me. Can you explain the poison part and the risks?
@BeckysHomestead10 жыл бұрын
When you mix the lye with the water, then put that into the oil, it has a reaction that turns it into soap. That reaction turns the lye from something dangerous into something safe and useful.

csds7679 It's called saponification.
@Marialla.10 жыл бұрын
Lye is dangerous in its raw state, and can cause serious chemical burns if not handled correctly. However, simple standard precautions are easy to manage, like never letting it touch your skin before saponification, and always adding lye to water, NEVER adding water to lye. I know it sounds scary at first, but once you understand it it isn't really any more dangerous than dealing with a hot stove. Just know the dangers and don't be stupid about it and try to skip safety steps. Also, keep a bottle of vinegar around just in case. Vinegar neutralizes lye, and if (god forbid) there should be any spill, pouring vinegar all over the spill will fix things as fast as possible.

Wow, who wears safety goggles and a face mask, but no gloves! Lye burns are no joke, one really needs to wear gloves while doing this...

Not only that, but that NIOSH N95 face mask shown is rated for particulates, not for fumes.

Besides not wearing gloves at all, she didn’t wear the goggles when she poured the lye water into the oil, or when blending. Didn’t see her put the lye bucket right into a vinegar bath, either. These are basic safety precautions!

Alex K-J lye burns your skin, thats why she should wear gloves. and if done incorrectly, adding water to lye can cause it to explode. thats why she should wear gloves, and remember to add the lye slowly to the water to prevent exploding.
