As a current technician of 30 years,,,, I can honestly tell anyone that will actually take the time to read this to go become a registered nurse,,,, x ray technician,,,,,anything medical related. Crown and bridge is over! Dentures are really getting close to becoming straight digital across the board. I am in the tail end of my career,,,, but under no circumstance consider getting into this field. I am not being negative. I just really want people to really be aware that the time it takes to learn to set up dentures and learn to contour and build porcelain,,,, you could take that same amount of effort and education and become a nurse and be making a great living. Matt 😊

Becoming a registered nurse means you deal with death. If the mental toll is worth it go for it lol.

I am a retired Master Certified Dental Lab Technician/Owner with an AS Degree. All of those with high tech skills were replaced first by Overnight Shipping and Overseas Labs. They made a crown at a 65+% discount and quick returns due to their Labs running in 3 shifts. Next, computer 3D robot milling and 3D printing have taken at least 80% of the Laboratory Technician positions. Computer technicians are now designing crowns on 3D computer programs. I tried to get a part time position designing crowns and I was told that I was a Dinosaur and only computer tech grads were filling those positions. Pretty Bleak unless you are a Computer Tech Grad.

Become a Clinical Dental Technician after a couple of years working as a Techie. If you can be self employed even better, u can earn as much or as little as u are satisfied with. I'm self employed and get to spend time with my son and wife on a daily basis instead of being stuck in a 8-5pm job. I've done my time working hard thankless low paying hours for other ppl, never again. It is a profession ideal only for ppl who love working with their hands. U can get top marks for your assignments and written tests but the real test is when you at the bench or in the Clinic. There are better paying professions out there though. There's always a balance, passion is 1 thing but the $ must be right.

That's what I think too. I mean not that I want to earn a little bit amount of money but I had been struggling so bad to find something that will at least not pay me the minimum wage and that can have to do with working with my hands. It's wierd but I love working with polymer clay, modeling, sculpting painting tiny things but it's difficult for me to think I'll live off that. I know it's possible but I haven't been able to make it doing those things. It sucks that creative and people that are good with their hands are always looked down on or at least that's how I feel.

Dentures is probably the next growth wave as he said. Baby Boomers will lose teeth and need Dentures not crowns and bridges. On the job training is probably your best bet and I highly recommend visiting laboratories and talking off the record to technicians that are working there at the lab producing the work. Print up general contact information business cards and discreetly give to worker bees to talk away from the lab environment. PS This is demanding production work and not glamorous at all. But very fulfilling if you have artistic and mechanical talent. My life for 25 years.

I work maintenance in a dental company that lets you be a trainee for this and they teach you this, of course you need to know Proficient English and have a GED or high school diploma. Anyhow the only downside is that you get paid by the quantity of work instead of hourly. But it's a great opportunity to make money and not have much education. But it's a stressful and fast paced invironment. Of course actual experience in the department prior to being employed gives you more money. I can vouch with the jobs decreasing, atleast for now, due to me seeing more machines making it easier but in return requiring less people

you can't blame machines, the biggest issue is large labs outsourcing work overseas, and undercutting prices of local laboratories by huge margins.

Unfortunately Dental lab techs.are very under rated. They do 75percent of the work in fabricating an appliance but get very little in return for their work. The dentist gets the large percentage of the total cost doing 25 percent of the work.Experience dental techs.are becoming very hard to find and not to many people want to go into this field when the dentist gets all the glory if the case works good but if their are problems it's the techs. fault.
