Whatever survey that is, I find it hard to believe various occupations have such high meaning and satisfaction rate. Most people don't find their jobs meaningful, and would rather do something else if they were not paid for it. Like 90 percent satisfication rate? Really? Are we selling a prodcut here lol

Up and coming grad student in physics here. Can maybe throw in my two cents. It’s not for everybody. You spend a lot of time just learning the basics (pretty much all of undergrad). Than in grad school it gets more specialized. Physics grad students don’t actually need to pay for grad school most of the time. Because they are either doing research for the school or are helping teach classes. So they get their tuition waved or can be paid 30-40k a year while earning their degree. The school would be paying you to go which is a nice change. This is only true for PhD programs. For masters it can be different. For those who don’t know. You go from undergrad to being a PhD student. You don’t do undergrad masters than PhD. Although you do attain your masters on your way to your PhD. The market after you completed your PhD is competitive. You will have a place to work, but it won’t be where you want. There are trade offs with every job, field, and specialization. Whether you are theoretical or experimental can make a huge difference. Theoretical is usually more competitive. Because you need to be good with the numbers. While experimental is more forgiving however it eliminates some of the freedom allowed for your own questions. Instead your answering someone else’s questions instead of coming up with your own. That’s how it goes though.

I worked for 34 years for the Los Angeles DWP as a Power Plant Operator in the DWP basin Generating Stations. These were generating stations that in the past burned both natural gas and fuel oil in large boiler to make steam to generate electricity using large steam turbine generator units. Most of the units I operated were units that were built in the 1950s that had mostly pneumatic control systems made by the company called Bailey Meter Company. One of the most difficult things of being a generating station operator was that for 34 years I worked rotating shifts of 10 day on and 4 days off. There was 10 days of the dayshift and four days off, then 10 days of the what was called peak shift and 4 days off and 10 days of the graveyard shift. This made it very difficult to have a social life and my waking and sleeping times kept changing. I retired in July 2011. I am now 73 years old and have a very good Los Angeles DWP retirement pension. Also I am a single man who never got married. In my line of work most of the men who were married and had a family were married before they began working for the Los Angeles DWP as a Generating Station Operator. For men that were single when they started this career, it was very rare for them to get married after they started working as a Generating Station Operator. We also had a few women working as Generating Station Operators. This line of work was mostly men.

Why use a linear regression fit for wage growth? I think it's more common, and probably more accurate (although I have not actually investigated this), to think of wage inflation as exponential. Also, a common trap people run into when evaluating actuary salaries against other professions is ignoring credentials. To be considered an actuary, you must at least be an associate of the CAS or SOA (at least in the US). When comparing to similar fields like data science, you'll be including recent graduates with just undergrad degrees. Similar positions in the actuarial field, however (actuarial analysts), are excluded. So their wages are overstated relative to other professions. It might be better to compare actuaries to people in other fields with at least a master's degree. That, or include non-credentialed actuaries.

I tried to get into the elevator trade, but they didn't want me. I was in my 30's, a navy vet and I had a strong background as a licensed factory electrician/mechanic and worked plant maintenance. I had PLC and installation experience. I wrote letters and sent out resumes, but I never heard a thing.. Like all good jobs that are hard to get, you have to know somebody to get you in, and if you don't know anybody, well then that's too bad
