It's purely about cash, proving competence is secondary. Make it as complex as possible, require refreshers, amendments regularly (all at cost). I'm all for CPD, but virtually all these schemes are cash cows.

Hi Adrian I feel I got a little screwed over too. Completed all my college work day release as a teenager, Moved on to portfolio, sent it off, was told to go do my AM2 (2007) passed that aged 21. Few years later tried to get a gold card and was told I had no NVQ3, CnG even charged me for the privilege. The College had moved, they didn’t remember me, my assessor had even passed away (that part cannot be helped I know). I’ve been arguing with them all for years, TESP we’re kinda helpful at first. Even copied the head of unite in on the emails but it all fizzled out when effectively they realised they had the hump with their own organisation. I’ve been doing the mature candidate assessment (approx £1300) and my assessor told me it’s off his desk this week but my experienced worker card ran out in May (only lasts 18months) and it’s caused some trouble accessing certain sites or jobs again. The whole ordeal has been a shambles.

It’s an absolute joke and you are right about these companies. They are all owned by the same people and will not argue with themselves, so you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Your only choice is to spend more money and pay for them for the solution

Hi Adrian, I did a 4y apprenticeship in mechatronics with engineer tech IoA cert and went to college, did gateway assessments on domestic and industrial wiring, testing, 3 phase, swa etc at college. My portfolio included electrical jobs. However, my EPA was for EngTech competency, not AM2. Many of the health and safety units I check the box for and electrical fault finding units as well as UPK was heavily electrical. Funnily enough, NET requirements for AM2 assessment say a tech apprenticeship with electrical units are fine to take the AM2, but might not be recognised by JIB for gold card, even if I take AM2, 18th and inspection C&G! Granted there are gaps in my knowledge for building regs, I get that, but it looks like I'd have to do another portfolio, several other qualifications and get 5 years experience before I could be considered qualified? Surely I'm more than halfway there already? Interesting what your thoughts are on this, I can't be the only one in this boat.
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training Жыл бұрын
That is interesting. The building regulations exam is so easy, similar to regs where you get to use the book. But, building regs is not part of the apprenticeship and it’s included in the AM2S. It’s a crazy world
@sevesham
@sevesham Жыл бұрын
Hi Hyden, I did a similar apprentice scheme, 4y advanced mechatronics engineering with a huge electrical jobs portfolio as yours plus Part P and industrial gateway assessments and IET EPA for EngTech (Mechatronic Maintenance Technician), upgrade C&G 17th to 18th edition, did extra Inspection and Testing C&G and still have got problems to join NICEIC. Better if someone will go on 4 weeks course and will be a "proper electrician" after a month.

I think that any training providers within the industry should have qualified people teaching as it should be lead by example
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training Жыл бұрын
I agree, but then that becomes difficult because qualifications change and it would be hard to keep up. You also then need to consider which qualifications are needed, whether electrical or teaching, or both. Then you have the situation that I am in, I thought I was qualified but found out once I had the job that I’m not, and I was let down by my training provider City College Brighton and Hove, now Brighton MET. I’m now stuck because I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years and would have to go back on the tools to build my level 3 NVQ, but I’m a full time trainer and I’m working towards my level 5 teaching qualification. As you can see from my videos, I’m more than capable of teaching this qualification, yet you are suggesting that someone who has only just qualified is more suitable to the role. I am not alone either

Hi Adrian, I must say I'm not a fan of enforced classroom training in this day and age. It certainly has its place, especially for the school leaver. But there as so many ways to learn nowadays, surely there are only 2 things which need to be assessed. 1/ Does the applicant have the knowledge to be a good electrician ? 2/ Does he have the practical skills to be a good electrician. A group of electricians is like any other demographic - it will contain a range of mental capabilities. Is there really any point in teaching a future house-basher the physics of subatomic particles ? If the subject interests him/her then fine. They can research the subject and maybe choose a different role in life, who knows. Personally I love learning new stuff, but most of it doesn't make me a better electrician. We all know that if you ask the average qualified electrician who has been working domestic only, for last 10 years, chances are he will have forgotten everything from college which is not relevant to domestic work. If we really wish to raise standards in the industry, the AM2 should give a Provisional licence to work, but the individual is assessed every 5 years (theory and skills) and only given Approved status in those fields in which he/she has been assessed and passed.
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training Жыл бұрын
Be careful what you wish for, as the eventual plan will be like the gas industry and 5-year reassessments to continue working. In the gas industry this cost them £5k plus every time and the reality is that it doesn’t improve standards within the industry, or stop the rogue traders. Personally, I think that everyone should understand the physics of subatomic particles because that is the minimum level to understand your trade. Without that knowledge people would just be glorified labourers, because anyone can clip cables and drill holes. It’s basic monkey see, monkey do, but to actually understand why we do, what we do, is where the expertise is. If you let that knowledge drop, you let the value drop with it and that will ultimately affect wages, because anyone can do it and this is what the industry wants. We need to join together and stop that from happening otherwise our trade will be deskilled and devalued to the point of no return. When I started just over 20 years ago electricians were one of the most respected trades on-site, now we are one of the worst. I’ve seen wages decline and stagnate and I was paying my employees more 15 years ago then most are earning now, and you have to question why that is. I’ve see a connection with Part P and fast track learning, along with the decline starting shortly after Part P in 2005, which has been gaining momentum ever since. Look at the cost of EICR’s because anyone can pass an inspection and testing qualification without any electrical training whatsoever, so my advice to anyone who feels that way is… Be careful what you wish for, otherwise this job may not be a viable wage earning option for you in the future

Hi Adrian I'm in the same boat as most on here I went to college for 3+ years and qualified under 2360 but I only did nvq2 as nvq3 wasn't around at the time in the early late 90's I also have 18th and 2391 the full version again late 90's but I still can't get a gold card all the training companies want £2000+ and won't give me basic information on what I'd get for my money and if its really necessary for me to do the whole thing considering my training and qualifications, so if I could get a copy of the nvq3 portfolio and edited it for my purposes, how would I get it assessed would I have to go through a training agency or could I submit it myself? Thanks for any info cheers.

Hey, I hold 2330 Lvl 2/3 and as such I now cannot sign up to a cps scheme due to the change last year in the EAS guidance. I have 2391-10, 2382, 2377, 2919, 2330 lvl 2/3 and worked in the industry for 16 years now, it really frustrates me as I have worked for large organisations doing various works but I can’t sign up to NiCeic/Napit! I have now enrolled on the 2346 which I hope to complete sharpish as I have all the material they require, then the AM2E. Then I can sign up.

@@Pure_electrical_training looking at the quantity of evidence units required it would take a lot of work to take all the photos to fit. They've then got to meet in person at least once with the assessor and be observed working and they've got to pass the 2391 which includes the practical in person on the live test rig. If you wanted to cheat there's probably a way to obtain a fake C&G certificate.

what about this new domestic insnstaller apprenticeship 3 year course ? is there any view to just doing a domestic installer NVQ ? if you already have completed 2330 level 2 and 3 and 2382 and 2392-10, as I don't want to go into electrician that works on site or commercial work ?
@Pure_electrical_training

It’s up to you and it’s an option. With the domestic route you will be pigeon holed into staying within domestic. With the current experienced worker route you can still work in commercial and industrial if need be. Either way, the workplace logbook (aka portfolio/NVQ) is the same, so you get something for nothing. Soon, September, they are bringing out a domestic only portfolio and you will no longer have that choice, so be careful as it will cost you to change again in the future. Either way, it’s up to you
