What is the best route to qualify as electrician and get a gold card? A question I get asked daily. It is such a tricky one to cover as it varies around all regions of the UK.
I discuss the key options available to you and how they map out with employers and training providers.
Please check out the links below for full details and some of the free support for trainees.

Great vid, thanks Mark. It's about time England made it a level playing field for anyone at any stage of their career to take on an apprenticeship. Having done the self-funded C&G 2357 evening course route, I can say it's been tough and you need some resolve/luck to see the NVQ through to AM2. We were sold on the basis that "most people find work in their 2nd year". Only two within our group of 15 actually managed to do that, which was a 50/50 split of those already in the electrical industry and those from outside the electrical industry. Not wanting to put potential adult re-trainees off but it's a tough route if you're working full-time elsewhere and doing evening classes - you need a decent pot of money for the courses and additional time for assignments/learning, as well as some lateral thinking when it comes to finding work. Be prepared to take a financial hit once you enter industry but also know that it'll level up soon enough. If you can get an apprenticeship as an adult and it's what you really want, snap their hand off!

Thank you for this informative video! Working as a decorator like 6-7 years in London but it feels boring.. Not sure which is the best way, I've got a decent savings and able to work flexible as self employed. I'll try gather more info from electricians on site, maybe giving me some more courage too, I am a bit lack of that.

Hello Sir Thank you for your efforts so far.I work within the HVAC industries and through evening classes I have finished and passed L3 City and Guilds 8202 at College of North West London. I want to start a new career as an electrician but I do not have any construction installations experience at all. Please in short if could;clarify for me where to next after qualifying to L3 City and Guilds 8202!! Many thanks in advance

What is the AAC route for approved grading. I've heard it bypasses the 2 year requirement for grading approved along with your testing qualification is this true or a myth

Lots of information to take in but are you able to answer my question - i have 2360 Pt1&2, 16th, 17th, 18th edition, Part-P registered with NICEIC and been electrician for 35 years, mainly self employed and didn't do an apprenticeship. What is my route to JIB Gold Card ? Thanks in advance.

T levels seem to be about the opposite of an apprenticeship. You do 20% on the job and the rest at college as opposed to an apprenticeship where you do 20% at college.

Yes I would more compare them to the existing full time study routes but with some time spent at work. Sounds promising but as always the devil is in the detail

ECS ‘learner card’ is really hard to get. And over £100, which when paying for all the courses and everything else isn’t cheap.
@A121podcast
@A121podcast Жыл бұрын
Yeah I guess what's expensive or not is relative to value. I think at around £30-£40 a year the ECS card gives that. I know the full time routes are really hard to get graded by JIB as you need that all important employment. www.ecscard.org.uk/card-types

I also know of at least one training provider who say that they don’t care what quals you have, they start you from day one on the apprenticeship

They should be reported to the external verifiers as they should be RPL for completed modules etc

In theory could you set up doing general electrical work as a handyman, do the 2391-52 and trot along for 5 years doing EICRs and non-notifiable work and then do the Experienced Worker Route having been in the industry 5 years?
@A121podcast
@A121podcast Жыл бұрын
You could. Anyone can use the EWR. But the skillscan for it would point you at doing the lvl2/lv3 before you got very far. Gate keeping on that route is pretty robust. Craig Wiltshire did a podcast with me about it on this channel maybe 3 months ago. It was a worry of mine! But seems not to be the case. The skillscan identifies those it will apply to and sends those it won't to the appropriate training
