I've come to look forward to these weekly videos so much - super informative, fun to watch/absorb, and definitely improving understanding of some more nuanced things to watch for during the games. Really enjoyed the aspect of the run-pass-pass quiz to pre-determine the likeliest play selection. It's a tall order, but I see Fiske helping to blow up the timing of some of the slow mesh due to initial burst into the backfield.

Nice work, Kev! Wake Forest's Slow Mesh RPO somewhat reminds me of the knuckleball in baseball. The knuckleball is often thrown by pitchers who might not have the same fastball velocity as others, but it gives them a unique advantage with its unpredictable movement. Similarly, the Slow Mesh RPO seems like a tactic employed to level the playing field, especially when going head-to-head with traditionally stronger teams. The extended decision-making time it grants the quarterback is akin to the unpredictable trajectory of a knuckleball, keeping the defense guessing and off balance. Wake Forest's utilization of this innovative offense has definitely set them apart, and it's going to be intriguing to see how FSU adapts to it in the upcoming game.

Let's work under the assumption that you won't win one on ones. I would plug up interior gaps either by pinching my DEs or playing a tite front, force the give, and let my safeties rally to the run game. I think that's what most teams are doing to them this year and they don't have the run game right now to sustain much offense.
@1980hgf
@1980hgf Жыл бұрын
I think defensive pre-snap motion and stunting could at least make this difficult for a less experienced QB. That could provide some frustration for the offense, but it does look tough to defend when it's clicking.

@dylenalfaro4114

It comes downs to jimmy and joe. You need a QB that’s good and can make these reads accurately, you need a RB with good vision to see multiple lanes. And you still need a decent enough line to hold pressure. Watching the Pitt game they had some good plays against the slow mesh bc Wakes O-line got beat real fast. The absence of Hartman can be felt this year.
@XsandNoles
@XsandNoles Жыл бұрын
When that had that though with Perry, Hartman, and Walker they were unreal though. I agree 100% though. They don't have that talent this year.

I'd blitz to counter it. Don't give Wake's QB time in the backfield to think. Don't give them any lanes to run. Get them behind the chains and mix in blitz looks to add extra confusion. Break the QB and you completely shut down their entire offense.
@XsandNoles
@XsandNoles Жыл бұрын
Works if you can get there in time. Hartman did a really good job of finding the open man vs blitzes.

What you didn't get into is how to beat this play. Do defenses need to disguise better and trick Wake into sending the ball where they want it?
@grillmaster95
@grillmaster95 Жыл бұрын
You beat it by getting pressure in the backfield. The whole point of the read being slow is to make the defense choose to either go after the receiver or to attack the run. If you sit at the read for multiple seconds with no pressure, the long receiver routes come open because DBs can't cover someone for that long basically no matter what. If you force the read to happen early with D line pressure, then the defensive scheme hasn't been tipped yet and the receivers are still covered by DBs
@XsandNoles

I would keep safeties back, force the run, jam up interior gaps with the DL and let the safeties rally personally

@XsandNoles until our defense stops it I'm not buying it. That wake forest offense is still dangerous. They are highly capable of scoring plus our offense hasn't done well against them againg Clawson too. This a a major problem of a game stylistic for us for sure. That offense has been stopped by weaker teams with Hartman last season but that team had it's way against our defense in Doak. Hartman is great QB but that system causes problems. You think Fuller and his support staff didn't look at film for 3 years now? They have and what ever they are doing to combat that style has not worked. Norvell play calling has been slowed down against that defense too
