I watched your first 4 drives frame by frame and in every single one, you are full straight out reach back when your plant foot is about 4-6" from touching the ground. Maybe it doesn't matter so much when the full reach back happens but just that you don't start pulling through until the plant foot stomps down. Also I noticed a difference from your form to the pros is your trailing arm doesn't tuck as soon as theirs do which is inhibiting you from faster rotation. Lastly I noticed although you are pulling through at a good height you are holding the disc far out from your body which isn't maximizing your power pocket and snap. Turn a little more backward in your x-step, stomp that plant foot down and pull through close to your chest and you'll snap the stamp off that mother trucker

BTW, your longest throw you were turned around backward more and the disc was closer to your body, watch the slow-mo

Came to say this, he should exaggerate even more than he thinks if he wants to get to where Paul/Drew/Simon are in terms of when they hit peak coil. He's absolutely at peak 3 frames or so early (go to 7:11 and use the periods/commas on your keyboard to go frame by frame). The drill I recommend is do the normal walk up, and pause right when you hit peak and see how that feels. And then start IN your x-step (legs crossed) to realize how much later you should start the swing. When at peak coil for more than like 2 frames, you're losing a lot of the rubberband effect you see all of the pros get. (even in slow motion simon/paul/drew/emerson/paige all are at peak hardly more than a single frame) I don't say this as a keyboard warrior either. This video is still useful to those learning and I'm currently struggling with being consistent at my brace leg timing. (i'm only throwing ~400 regularly at the moment) Love the comment!

Thanks for the encouragement! I've been reaching back and pulling through too early for as long as I've played. Been recognizing this and trying to delay it. Maybe if I actually aim to not reach back until planted like you say it will move me closer to actually doing it. The body hates to coil up and tries to unwind as soon as possible. We really have to trick it.

You might want to watch the timing advice Ezra gives Uli in the video below. Ezra throws really far... and Uli's hitting 500+ feet. Also, I'll make a few observations on what might be costing you distance: 1). It looks like you're reaching back behind your body, forcing you to "round". If you end up pushing it right of your target line often, that might be the cause. 2) Your body posture : Even thought you're moving slowly, you're taking a huge last .step with your right foot, so you end up leaning far forward. This means you're not able to generate much force from your your rear foot, because there's less weight on it. You also end up leaning far out in front of yourself, and then far forward at the end of the shot - that's force moving your body that's not transferred to the disc. Try taking last step just a foot or so in front of your right shoulder (just to feel the difference), and really push down on your right foot as you go into the explosive part of your motion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYXJf3Wid6mffKM

I’m excited to try this today I really been working on my back this whole year and I can see a drastic improvement from last year still got a long way to go but hoping I can get my Fairways like you to 350s-400 consistently. You can hear the snap when you throw!

Main thing to focus on is planting before you throw. As someone working on this now, I've had to add a "pump" to my backswing as I'm starting to walk up. Basically I bring it forward a bit, early on. Helps a bit, because that extra step delays the peak extension of the backswing.

U r def right w the reach back and even tho it feels awkward at first and is something I am still trying to perfect, this is where the whip comes from! U said excatly what I always say the pros step then reach and throw. One thing that helped me at first was to do a counter pump at first to keep my timing but delay reaching back. I also use this shot in the open or 4 max drives but still use my old form when throwing upshots and shorter ones. The hard part for me is that it changed the timing of my run up/x-step so much it throws off my accuracy. Been working on this 4 like 2 years now tho and still got a little way to go!

I just tried this and what I feel is, my weight is on my front foot and I am definitely pulling through against my front foot. It is not rushed at all. I've never felt this before!. I also noticed that my back leg does not come whipping around. No back pain either. I hope this transfers to my next round!

I find my best snap when I start my reach back as soon as my toe touches down. Then when I drop down to my heel for the pivot I’m at max reach back. I also throw my left shoulder back instead of reaching back with my throwing arm.

My best advice to myself was to go to a soccer field, with the nets that are small enough to catch your disc. Practice your runup with your eyes closed in super slow motion visualizing until it feels so natural to release the disc with implosiveness. don't release the disc until you feel like you're in the zone.

This sounds like a great tip to improve proprioception - the ability to sense the body and limbs as they move around in space. I think this is an untapped field in disc golf coaching.

I remember from Stokely's class one thing he mentioned is that nothing to do with the throw should happen before your foot is planted. I'm not sure if that included reach back but I may have to try lagging the reach back until after I plant.

Just curious, did you ever find a good technique to cheat your head with the reachback or was it just a gradual process? I've had this issue for years, worked on it for years, but just can not make the pieces click.

The lesson to be learned here is this ... what you feel like you're doing and what you're actually doing are almost always different. Example...Simon says he feels like his thumb goes up when he follows through on his putts but it actually flips under his hand. This happens in all sports and is why coaches explaining a position vs players explaining what they feel is so vastly different. Over exaggerate your swing changes by 2x and you'll probably end up in the position you're intending to be in. Also, that lunge ;you see in the video (short front leg, long back leg) is capping any benefit you could be getting from the bottom half of your body and your knee is gonna feel it at some point. It's likely what's keeping the nose down and giving you some extra distance, but as soon as you turn up the juice you're gonna be throwing it all over the place and eventually you'll have to retool your x step and brace. Thanks for the video, keep up the good work.

If you haven't already I would add the tip of the whip, which gives you more of a Anthony Barelela style but it also delays the "reach back" from starting. Slingshot made a tip of the whip video about 2 years ago that simplifies how to do it. After watching it I added about 30-50ft of distance. I also really like this video too...no offense and want to really exaggerate the foot planting first strategy. It's funny how it feels different from how it looks in slow motion😊

I start my reach back as my X Step occurs because I didn't want any lag and didn't want to stop the body's forward momentum. Now it's this nose angle that's killing me.

You just described the exact step I’ve been stuck on, currently! Edit: I should say I believe that I’m pulling my arm upwards through the pocket, rather than forwards. I’m trying to think about leading with my elbow (from another Iceberg vid) but I’m not sure that’s always helping

you are not getting into the powerpocket, rounding with the shoulders is what i believe is what kills distance the most, and that is a part of your form that should be fixed before this. Start with standstill exercises and try to get the disc to the middle of your lower chest area. Then you and really keep that lower arm parallel to your body. Also it easier if you are not trying to look at where you are throwing. In the beggining try to look 90 degrees of where you are throwing, even after the release.
