Have you ever wondered what makes a bass line good or not? Now THAT is a question worth asking!
It’s easy to go and play a ton of great basslines without really knowing what makes them great. But as bass players, the more we know about why great basslines work, the better we can make our own great basslines.
In lesson #4 of the Basslines From Scratch series, we’ll be looking at 5 factors that make catchy basslines.
Once you go through this lesson, you’ll be able to:
→ Craft a bassline with impact
→ Know when to play lots of notes vs. very few
→ Add variety to make your basslines catchier
→ How to pick the perfect sound for your basslines
→ Completely change the ‘feel’ of any bass line
The process of putting together a bassline becomes so much easier when you see the nuts and bolts that go into basslines that already exist out there in the world.
Remember though, these 5 factors AREN’T rules that need to be rigidly followed. They’re just some things that some great basslines have in common. Do all great basslines have to have all of the factors in them? Definitely not! But most will have at least one.
When it comes to making your own music, think about how you can add some of these into your basslines.
Once you have a bassline that you’ve written though, how will you make sure it’s actually a good line? If you don’t have a ton of experience, there’s sometimes no way to know. That’s exactly why I created the Basslines From Scratch Checklist.
