When played live, "Frantic" and "St Anger" itself.. sound really good. Proper snare sound in conjunction with the rest of the live set, proper good guitar tone, and Hetfield nailing the vocals right on the money. Really believe that, with a good bit of editing, Kirk laying down some structured soloing, better production and making Invisible Kid invisible from the album, it could have been genuinely good. Enjoyed your comments and thoughts here.

Theres a HQ vid of it here to see. Any proper official video of Frantic from the same Euro Stadium tour again, sounds good!🤘🤘😁 Listen without any associations or bad feelins' to the song and hear it as brand new. Much better live, within the context of the live set. They played St Anger and Frantic on their outdoor Euro tours and those songs got a great response. Im Irish, saw them here in '19, and was amazed at how good Frantic sounded. It was like a whole new recording. Again, if people still dislike the songs despite the better appearence live, thats cool. I actually really like the production on Kill Em All. It's raw, it's got a lot of energy, and it has a sizzling bite to it. The guitars sound like chainsaws and it's awesome. I've always been on the fence with Load/Reload. Taking the highlights from each and turning them into one release... and I think you have a killer rock album. But I think on a lot of tracks they come across as imitating a loose, southern bluesy thing without really nailing the vibe. For lack of a better term, those albums needed to be a little more sloppy and a little less precisely produced. But in the grand scheme of things, I do think they've aged better then a lot of the "thrash only" fans give them credit for.

PS- I think that album would have been Metallica's greatest album (greatest thrash album?) if it had a brighter production with more depth (and some bass wouldn't hurt) because in order to appreciate richness of complex intricate music, you should make it more attractive for a listen to really pour the listener in, like Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson. Yeah ranking kill em all anywhere under classic tier is just objectively wrong. That album literally invented the thrash metal genre (slayer at that time was closer to first wave black metal and anthrax was more traditional heavy metal). Songs like seek and destroy, no remorse, hit the lights, four horsemen, motorbreath, and whiplash are not only some of the best metallica songs, but some of the most important metal songs ever released. The entire tracklist is legendary. It's considered one of the best debut releases by any band in history. Also the production fucking kicks ass, especially considering when it was released. In 1983 that guitar tone was mind blowing. Even by today's standards it still sounds pretty good. If it had "better" production, it would not be nearly as heavy. The rawness is as much part of the songwriting as the riffs themselves. I don't see how anyone can think it sounds bad unless all they listen to is overproduced djent shit that's compressed to hell. Kill Em All is what a REAL band sounds like. It's a bunch of dudes picking up real guitars, plugging into real amps, pressing record on the tape and playing the absolute SHIT out of them. No plugins or DAW's needed. That's what true metal is about

I don‘t agree with everything, but also I think you‘re not wrong. I liked Hard Wired surprinsingly much, I think it‘s their best music since Black Album. Death Magnetic as a whole is pretty much forgettable, I had high expectations that weren’t even remotely met, nothing really stuck or stood out for me. It seems pretty much… irrelevant. Maybe give it a try again soon. Black Album is *the* metal album I‘d give to somebody who‘s never been into metal and wants to find out if they like it or not. Awesome piece of art, and it kickstarted metal into accessible music without losing its soul, so to say. Including me. I wouldn‘t write this comment if the Black Album wasn‘t there. Listening to Enter Sandman for the first time, the driving intro, felt like having a spiritual experience. Easy once of my favourite album openers, among Rammstein‘s Reise Reise (album of the same name) and Genesis‘ Dance On A Volcano (A Trick Of The Tail). Load and ReLoad are vastly underrated, especially ReLoad. Always a good listen. Kill is awesome. Solid A. Would be a good A if better produced, but that can‘t be the standard for a debut. (Exception: Guns n‘ Roses) Justice… is overrated. Many people mistake that for me saying it‘s bad, but that‘s not the same. Justice is outstanding, it just isn‘t remotely as epic as Puppets or Lightning were. Which is some paradox bc I dig prog rock. Deep down I know that Puppets is (arguable) their best album, and Orion is one of the very few song I could listen to on repeat. But… it‘s Lightning for me. That 2003 disgrace isn‘t worth enough to think about it. And I don‘t have a habit of ranking compilations. Nice one! 🤘🏻😎

So relatable in the first 10 seconds Mike… I loved Metallica over every metal band for my early teenage years. I’m so thankful, for one, they sparked a true love for a bands full body of work. Secondly, it increased my drumming speed, discipline, and dedication to learning songs and grooves at an early age. Typing this while watching the video, and LuLu is most definitely The Room of albums, however I’ve gone back to watch The Room 3-4x, as much can not be said about that horrid album. I used to think that …And Justice For All was the best one, and then when I started to learn those solos and riffs (kinda my first introduction into actually competently playing metal) I started to notice that, while the song structure and licks themselves are gushing with creativity and passion, the solos are actually pretty lack luster sometimes when compared to that standard. Most of the solos follow (in my opinion) sort of the same pattern of beginning with a phrygian/melodic minor slow sound and then transition into some super energetic blues solo which, while super awesome, does start to lose its luster when you’ve heard it 1000 times.

Good video dude, I am always interested in hearing younger fans than me how they got into Metallica and what album they came in on. For me I really consider the first five albums classic Metallica, and for the last decade or maybe even really sense St. Anger it felt like when they would go on tour it would be three or four songs off whatever album they were touring and then the rest of the set list would be from the first five albums, and Fuel. I guess the reason why I’m into fans of Metallica that didn’t become a fan during their first decade is because everyone my age or older I’ve already heard the same shit for 35 years now and I’m just tired of them, looking at the heavy metal handbook and telling me the same fucking answer. they’re my favorite band. I listen to a lot of different genres of music though, but mainly metal and hip-hop. I will admit I really don’t listen to a lot of the newer metal stuff really passed the mid 2000s. But I like hearing other peoples opinion and you’re absolutely right I really don’t hang out with other metal fans anymore because they have more rules than the Catholic Church when it comes to what’s accepted and what isn’t and it doesn’t feel like a lot of original thoughts go around. For the most part, it’s a fan base of people that actually judge other people and their character completely based on what kind of music they listen to . But yeah, that was actually pretty interesting. You are the first person I have ever heard say they came into Metallica as a fan during the St. Anger era. I really tried to like that album by the way, but after a month I was like “OK I get it you guys went through a lot, still my favorite band, but this album and it lol” But to be fair other than maybe Dr. Dre I can’t think of any artist that every album they put out I loved, and Dr. Dre is kind of cheating because he only puts out one album a decade so if you’re only going to put out three albums in 35 years they better be good . But yeah, I can’t wait to check out the rest of your channel man. Keep out the good work brother.

Hard to argue with that break down. Obviously everyone will have their favourites for various reasons. I'm one of the Justice fan boys. Can't get enough of it, but there's some serious nostalgia attached to that album for me so that will influence my love for it. I don't care too much for the majority of songs on the Black album and I tend to prefer rawer sounding music but the production on that album is a masterclass. An art form in itself. Objectively though, you're spot on with that tier list.

I think Rick Rubin killed metallica because people had hiiiiigh expectations of metallica with a clean Hetfield, smoother relationship in the band, the coming to peace with their past and embrace it, the world tour that followed st. Anger.....and then the whole loudness war, the "we have to satify every fan and reproduce some old riffs", the whole 1000-riffs-in-one-song attitude and all the mushy transistions....totally disappointed me. Especially that they tried to please everyone except themselves. It sounded like Fan Service - the Musicalbum. Theyve played ride the lightning in full set, theyve played Master of Puppets in full set, they digged out some old school songs, the new songs Death is not the end and vultures were awesome live... But death magnetic sounds not like that at all. Maybe in All Nightmare long. That was a pissy hetfield out of the gate haymaker. But else? Pretty weak ass mediocre and predictable. I like St Anger more because of the story and the stuff they had to fight off to even make this album.

I agree that the black album had a huge impact on metal for many reasons (and any talk about them selling out with it is just BS) so I get why you have it at the top. My changes would be 1) swapping Justice for Black (to me Justice and Puppets are peak Metallica). Justice is my favorite album so yeah... And black still deserves to be on excellent and above. 2) Move death magnetic to excellent because I think it's severely underrated. I always saw it as Justice 2.0. The gold disc version master removes the scooped EQ and as a result you can hear things that where missed. This list is fairly uncontrovertial, I think. My list is obviously different but the reasoning behind each ranking is pretty understandable. We all agree to all of these opinions already, it's just that some of these flaws bug us more than the others and hence, difference in rankings.

I feel like Mike puts a lot more emphasis on the production and the complexity of the material than most other ppl.

13:14 You said a few times that to truly be a progressive band is to simultaneously push musical boundaries and be instantly relatable, so would the first 4/5 Metallica records not fall under this, with bringing more harmony, dynamics, compositional complexity and aggression to metal while still being one of the most popular rock/metal groups of all time?

You like merciful fate? That song bores me to tears. Lol. It’s like 11 minutes of boredom. But you think Shortest Straw is boring? We are very different Metallica fans lol.

S&M is an Amazing album, especially James' vocal performance. His vocal performance on S&M2 was disappointing compared to the first one. He still sounds potent, but not even close to the first S&M. When James was in his mid 30's his voice was so smooth, so melodic, so beautiful, my favorite vocal performances by him are from that era.

I find that its a tragedy that they didn't do Orion in either s&m. Like Orion would be the perfect song for it

@@matthoranofficial idk, man. He confirmed his vocals were autotuned there, so it aint actually natural, which is really underwhelming to me. I prefer his vocals in master of puppets/AJFA era.

Maybe it's just me, but i don't even understand why the S&M album is even counted as a Metallica album, surly it's just yet another irritating project like LULU. All this bollocks' symphony shit, although beautiful music in its own right. IT’S NOT METAL. Neither is TBA, St pussy nor the Load of shit & yet more load of turd albums. How's that for an honest but very controversial argument!!!
