Thank you for sharing your journey. I’m finishing my MA in Communication Studies this Fall 24, but I’ve worked in higher education for 5 years (admissions and advising). I’m still considering my Ed.D in Higher Educational Administration. I’ve been encouraging myself not to stop climbing the ladder of success. I’ve been hearing a lot of people say to choose a spouse or choose the doctorate, but it’s encouraging to know you CAN have both and I’m trusting God for both.

Love your videos! I have dreamed of being a dean for years. My bachelors and masters degrees are both in social work too and I graduate with my EdD this December. I was just at a conference this weekend sharing my research (online doc. retention) and 2 recruiters were literally telling me the same thing you were saying about problems with undergraduate retention with minorities (I did research in this area in undergrad too a while back). I just don’t know what to do because for the last 4 years I’ve mainly been in accounting and been doing a ton of ministry (ie director of education) these are literally the only doors that God has opened and I’m about to start applying for jobs in higher ed. Any advice or suggestions?

Hi Delores! I just got my associates in business admin from a community collge and I'm about to go into uni majoring in business management. At first I thought I would use my degree by working under a corporation or supporting my own future business ventures. But after working a year as a part-time student success specialist at my school's Outreach department I decided that helping students, whether it was admissions or retention, has become a big big passion of mine. I was looking into such careers and decided I wanted to try to become a Dean or Coordinator of some sorts in higher education. That's when I stumbled upon your video and realized that your job and what it entails is exactly what I want to do in the future. Thank you for this video, as it was a very thorough and in-depth explanation on your journey and learning experiences. I was wondering if it was possible to what you do with a business management degree, or do I have to change my major completely?

Hi Jasmine, thanks you! You don’t have to change your major. I love that you worked as a student success specialist! I recommend continuing to do on campus jobs for more experience. When you graduate apply for positions like residence life coordinator, admissions counselor, student engagement coordinator, etc. and make sure the University will pay for your masters as an employee. Then start your masters degree. Your masters can be in business, social work, psych, communication, etc. mine is in social work

Can you live in the dorms if your over third? I’m planning on going back to school and I never got to live dorm life. I want do it cause it feels like a right of passage.
