What a great video! Super interesting hearing about the experience of getting into Digimon in 2022. I think that the “you need to watch it all” and the “Pokémon vs Digimon” people just make it harder for the community to grow. I try to treat each of my videos like it’s somebody’s first time hearing about Digimon and waving them in with welcoming arms. It strikes me that you came at it from a great angle with playing Cyber Sleuth, checking out Tamers & Ghost Game, and picking up a vital bracelet / hero! I think you really would enjoy Survive because the story absolutely rules! Since the original Adventure didn’t work for you, Survive might do the trick as it has similar themes (8 kids go to camp for the summer and wind up spirited away into a mysterious world) but with modern storytelling and stunning art. Loved your Shaman King a while ago and loved this one too! Thanks YT for recommending it hehe

I love the fact your starting your Digimon journey with Tamers, but a bit of a fair warning after the halfway point the show gets much darker and I saw that ur nephews are fairly young, Tamers will scare both of them. I don't want you to accidentally scar both of them so I'm advising you to not show them anything past a certain point, trust me you'll know it when you see it. One of the episode directors did Serial Experiments Lain and that's a very heavy anime with extremely unnerving imagery due to it being a psychological horror anime, this same director chose to include some unnerving imagery in Tamers since this series was a sort of reboot for the franchise as a whole. Take it from someone who watched this show growing up, some of the last third of Tamers is pure and utter nightmare fuel and isn't for the feint of heart.

literally came to the comments to say this. Tamers has a reputation in the fanbase for having scarred a large amount of the fanbase, and yet still being a big fan favorite. I don't want to give spoilers, but to further give a better idea, the final arc has a major theme of existential despair and trauma, which is thankfully lightened slightly in the english translation, but the themes are still there.

The reason I liked Digimon over time is that it is more of a concept put in different situations over just being a linear franchise. It allows for more experimentation. They aren't all winners but the thing is different things can attract different people. I know someone who prefers xros over Tamers. As for Adventure, I think it does hold up decently. At least, the original dub. Also Survive was stated to be a Visual novel. People who complained about not knowing tended to have outright avoided news about it. As for recommendations, just jump in whenever. Digimon isn't really a franchise you have to "catch up" in. Some Digimon stuff are for kids, some are for older crowds. Digimon is like Final Fantasy, it's themes and tropes are put in different settings.

It's always interesting to hear fresh impressions of Digimon from new fans. Alot of the Digimon community is from the old days, and most of us didn't have many friends that watched it, if at all, so we can be a bit insular sometimes. On top of that, Digimon is constantly experimenting and trying new things, so everybody has different preferences, making it hard for us to come to a consensus for where beginners should start. I do agree with you though, that Digimon has always had this hard balance to maintain, where they need to both appeal to older fans, while also attracting a new audience. Considering Bandai never expected Digimon to take off like it did, a string of bad business decisions in the West, and Bandai constantly underfunding Digimon projects, it's a wonder Digimon has even survived for as long as it has. I would also recommend you check out Monster Rancher. There was a TV show, and a card game, but the video games are where the series really shined. They weren't as formulaic as Pokemon games got, but also not as ephemeral as Digimon was. They leaned more into the life sim aspect of raising a monster, except it had this gimmick where you generate monsters by putting CDs into your console, and the combat system is engaging enough that there's still a tournament scene 20 years after MR2 was released. For years, we thought Monster Rancher was a dead series, but for it's 25th anniversary, MR1 & 2 got ported to Switch together, and there was a spin-off game where you raise Ultraman Kaiju. Also, I still have a bone to pick with Billiam with his review of Monster Rancher, he really did the series dirty.

Honestly you're doing what I'd recommend when it comes to digimon already for someone like you. You should continue checking out the animes though if you haven't. Each series is different and holds it's own appeal so like keep giving each a try till you find which ones mesh is a good way to handle it. The story for Digimon Survive is very good imo and a decent intro point but if you don't like visual novels you probably won't like it. If you have a high tolerance for grinding the older digimon story games are probably worth a try
@twarnold14

As a Digimon fan that loved the original show and got back into the franchise like 3 years ago, I got so excited to see you had a Terriermon on your Vital. That’s exactly the kind of stuff you need to do. (And yes, I bought my Vital and past 2 v-pets online, one being an import because Bandai.) As for story stuff to get into, the anime or Story games are it. Survive has a pretty good story, doing a lot of what the original Adventure did but with an appreciated twist. If you don’t like visual novels, then you might not stick with it even with the tactical battles sprinkled in. The Story games technically include World DS and Dawn/Dusk, but you’ve seen how they’ve aged. Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory are the new ones and have enough polish to be the golden children. Each anime gets to be unique, so that’s why Tamers and Ghost Game can stand on their own even if you aren’t a fan of Adventure or Fusion/Xros Wars. (I showed my girlfriend clips of Adventure and I can see how it aged, but I still love it. Powering up is tied directly to character growth; you just have to get past some old dub choices. And I found myself enjoying Xros Wars by arc 2 (second half of season 1 on Crunchyroll) but I understand not wanting to watch 20 episodes to get to the good part.)

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. In terms of games, I feel Cyber Sleuth is the easiest one for new fans. There are more guides and help sources out there along with a bit more of an active community for this game because it is one of the newer games that centers around the concept of raising and building a Digimon team. I personally always liked Data squad/ Savers for the anime - it was Digimon but with more “edge and angst.” Tamers is also a classic though especially since they tried to tie in the TCG game. Speaking of, the newest TCG release of Digimon is very active and great to be involved in as both a collector and competitive - just make sure you check card prices. Digimon is an interesting fandom - complicated lore with amazing character design. Pick a route and jump on in - I think that’s the best way to learn and enjoy it.

reading the comment section is surprisingly nice and sweet to see. its also surprising noticing that people come to the series from many different entry points, and take from digimon what they like. there seems to be a lack of consistency of what even dictates a digimon fan, but i think that variety is what makes the franchise unique and fun. as for what someone new might be interested in trying, the tcg is a surprising joy for an old digimon fan like me. i used to think i hated playing card games, but now im a huge fan of the digimon tcg. like you said, buying a couple booster packs is a good way to just get started. the art is amazing and its made me something of a collector. a lot of people will recommend the starter decks and that's not too much of an investment. some of the starter decks, usually whatever's newest, are also competitively viable, if you're interested in that kind of stuff. but if you don't have someone who wants to play or get into the game with, or are afraid to join a discord to play with strangers online, games or tv/films are always a good bet. the first digimon movie, at least in english, is a bit of a mess. but maybe its a good entry point? its corny and silly, but i find that charming and the animation is crazy. the one starring the majority of the first season's cast was directed by mamoru hosoda of wolf children and summer wars fame. it also helps that the movies are short compared to getting into a whole digimon franchise. maybe one more left field thing is just whatever community/social media you're already in, and explore the fanworks already there. you mentioned the modding scene for vital hero bracelets on etsy, but the fan community pumps out crazy art, stories, and merch themselves. the designs for some digimon speak for themselves. and you get a taste of what people like about the series that not even the creators know.

Tamers is cool and all, but I grew up mostly with Frontier, and I loved it! It gives of Power Ranger/Super Sentai vibes, but it has a lot of great Digimon core tenants too. It's kids, bonding with the spirits of the Legendary Warriors, and fighting as Digimon themselves. It's got an extremely solid plot, I ended up creating real attachments to the characters, and I really think it's a good jumping on point for someone who isn't familiar with the series as a whole. The nostalgia factor from Frontier alone has carried me through a lot of the other Digimon media since. The designs are just so cool and weird, and I love it to bits. Bits that I would like to absorb to get stronger because I have no friends and thus cannot power up through the power of friendship...

Welcome to the community! I'm glad you're enjoying it so far! The Digimon creators try their hardest to get Bandai to recognize the potential brand has, and only recently have been getting some success. Glad to see more people enjoying!!!!!!!! Of the virtual pet/Tamagotchi devices, the Vital Hero is definitely the best available, as the others are all secondary market now. The series actually started out as a Tamagotchi sibling-series! As for recommendations based on story, I'd suggest the various Digimon manga! There are only fan-translated copies as of now, but it has some really good story content that's comparatively easy to access as opposed to playing through a game or watching the anime. V-Tamer 01 is a classic one which starts out light-hearted but gets more serious as the story develops, but even manga adaptations of seasons such as Xros Wars (aka Fusion) are surprisingly good! The manga often tend to focus on the virtual pets to a degree too!

Your comment about there "being so many ways to be a Digimon fan" is so true. Personally, I'm more fan of the Monster designs then I am of any of the actual media: I do play some of the games and watch some of the anime, but most of my time with Digimon is looking at new Digimon designs as they get announced, coming up with cool headcanon evolution lines and branching trees, etc. That's actually something I think the way Digimon handles evolutions uniquely brings to the table: I can't think of any other monster raising/collecting franchise where there's a whole subcommunity around the potential ways to link and make connections between different monsters. (Incidentally, I highly reccomend Bogleech's Digimon reviews for anybody interested in that aspect of the series and wanting to learn all the designs without sitting through 20 games or shows or v-pets: it doesn't cover EVERY Digimon, but it does cover most of them. Wikimon is the best comprehensive wiki) To your point about being into story;s.... well, Digimon is in a very poor spot with having any sort of central lore or narrative: Each game, anime series, manga, etc tends to be it's own continuity, and to make matters worse, those TEND to share concepts and important figures or organizations, but their exact role in that continuity changes. Like, "The Royal Knights" are a group of Digimon in most continuities, but what they do in each one changes. And a lot of the lore is limited to like Japan only materials that you can't even find online, like in manuals or pack in comics or whatever. Bogleech's reviews are good for this, since a LOT of hardcore fans chime in on the comment section of each review and mention a lot of that obscure trivia., which isn't really compiled on wikis either. As an aside... you ever watched/read Gash / Zatch Bell? I looked at the other videos on your channel, and you mentioned Billiam, and it seems like the sort of thing you may have consumed at one point. It's my favorite manga of all time, and I highly suggest it: It does start off not as strong as a lot of battle shonen series, but unlike many of them it only ever continues to improve the further and further in you get exponentially, especially once it switches from a villain of the week to an arc based format (The anime is very, very flawed as an adapation, though, and diverges from the manga's plot entirely after a point) The basic premise is that 100 demon kids (and most of them are actual KIDS, like 5 or 6, which gives a lot of characters a different vibe then your typical shonen characters) get sent to earth with books, they get paired up with human partners who can read those books to let the demon use spells, and when their book is burnt, they get sent back to the demon world, last one standing is king. The relationship between human and demon is a pretty key part of the story, and in fact as their relationships develop, that's what unlocks new spells. Fights (once stuff gets going) are extremely tactical and strategic, with both the human and demon being involved, and the tonal contrast between the corny power of friendship and slice of life and comedic moments vs the dark, deep emotional gut pinches is masterful, and helps both extremes hit harder and feel more genuine.

Welcome, we're so happy to have you sibling! I am a big enthusiast of the vpets. Carefully raising them to get every possible evolution is a special interest of mine. They're basically the Vital before fitness... or color screens lol. There is a fanmade mmo they interact with though. But as far as onboarding, Tamers is usually the best place for an adult fan, it condenses a lot of previous versions of lore into something less nebulous, has good characters with interesting growth, and a darker tone than most runs of the show. A note on Bandai neglecting to push the franchise, there are literally ads for it running on KZbin right now where they completely strip out the digimon branding to... I guess bait randos into buying? Lol.

The cyber sleuths story reignited my love for the franchise, this last couple of years have been great for the franchise as a whole.

OG Digimon fan here. Well said man! Everyone is different and finding your own way to enjoy something is always the best way to get into a franchise, or anything for that matter. As a recommendation for you, when it comes to a good story for Digimon, you're already on the right path with Digimon Tamers. There's also Digimon Data Squad (season 5 of the Digimon anime). I've played Survive a bit and the story is indeed good, but like you said, visual novel games aren't really your thing. There's always the Digimon Comics/Manga which may be your best bet for a good story. And then of course there are the older PS1 games. My personal favorite is Digimon World 3. It's another traditional RPG with its own quirks and issues. Hope my comment helps!

Welcome to the Digimon community! Good to have you on board, hope you continue having fun with it. Edit: For context about marketing, Bandai is only just starting things up. Digimon has been largely going in and out of an IP coma since around 2004 after the anime continued to fail to reach the old heights it used to, and has been largely nonexistent in the West until 2015. It’s only with 2019 onwards, especially the past two years, that Digimon has been on the rise. New fans are a huge part of that!

I think the most significant factor in trying to become a fan of something is that desire to get into it, it shows how much you're willing to look past flaws and appreciate the positives. I think you're rocking a good journey into Digimon, there's no single way to enjoy Digimon, and there are multiple venues and I think it's one of the magics of it. I have worries with the Jaiden video, while the heart's in the right place, I can't help but paints incompetence in Digimon games. While each has flaws, I feel each holds endearment given the chance or puts a person off from giving a game an honest chance. Personally, you've built a solid foundation for Digimon, you've covered games to anime and a bit into virtual pets with the Vital Bracelet, and even the card game to boot. I would say I'd give any manga (V-Tamer 01 probably) a shot if you want to expand even further as a digestible way to enjoy more Digimon without sinking too much time. Other than that, just building on foundations, keeping at it with Tamers and Ghost Game, enjoying it with others and building rituals out of it helps solidify it and builds memories for the series that won't go away. There's going to be an upgraded Vital Bracelet coming soon, Vital Bracelet BE, not sure if it will move overseas but it does feel like they'll stop supporting DIMs for the old device, as well as a new app to accompany. I think if you want games, despite how very unbalanced it probably is, Digimon Rumble Arena feels like everything a Digimon Anime fighting game should be, and has a killer soundtrack. Card games are a big one, they will definitely branch out your reach, as it invites the easiest ways to welcome and expand people to Digimon's diverse roster, if you ever see a Digimon you like, give them a search and build upon your Digimon knowledge because, while not Pokemon, its more expansive than it looks, and there are tonnes not in any mainstream content that deserve love. While I can't in good conscience recommend anyone getting into a card game because of the money sink, I'd say it's worth also checking a local card game shop on a Digimon night to get to know others who are into the game as well. Also personally I think the design of the cards is very appealing. Not sure much else I can say but I think each part of Digimon holds a level of endearment to me, it just needs a moment and an open heart to appreciate it. You're doing a great job, with Digimon and with videos, and I have confidence you'll get far with how you're venturing into Digimon. On that note, I cannot believe you didn't mention anything about your favourite Digimons besides Terriermon, which I'm also a fan of, and the UlforceVeedramon line, but Patamon and its line hold a special place for me.

Oh man, truly agree with you! Digimon is an IP that has such an amazing potential, it has it all: lore, a different universe with still a lot of unknowns, cool and charismatic designs, a legacy, etc. Bandai really needs to see the potential in this Market and start pushing it even more -and not only Adventure stuff ¬¬-. Just like they do with, for example, Gundam; makes me remember the time they put 130M USD into a Gundam VR Project, just around the time Kazumasa Habu (Digimon games producer) was explaining on an interview (dont remember if it was at AX or the Digimon Con earlier this year) that [Bandai] didnt gave them "enough found" when replying to some of the fan's requests/questions. However, I gotta admit, Digimon has been enjoying something of a "renaissance" in mainstream media this past couple of years, so that makes me happy and optimistic. Glad to see new people checking into it and the community thriving!

What I always recommend for newcomers is to start by watching Digimon the movie 2000. It does an excellent job of explaining important things in a concise manner. The retro animation actually holds up very well considering this was also in theaters back in the day, and the soundtrack is impeccable. My friends and I have gotten into the TCG this past spring and the movie really helped them understand the general baseline of what Digimon is and how loveable it is. P. S I hope you're doing well, Negative Legend. Your videos back In the force of will days are what made me a fan. Im happy to see that you've dipped your toes in the Digimon world! Best wishes!

For the most part each series is its own thing, you don't need to 'catch up' with the anime, just watch what looks interesting to you. I'd advise staying away from the Frankenstein creation that is "The movie" and watch the original Japanese Adventure specials. On a somewhat related note, if you enjoy the special 'Our War Game', check out 'Summer Wars'.

Show wise, you're already on a good track with Tamers. It'll get better as it goes. The later stuff might be a little off for really young kid though. For games I really like Survive and from what I've seen I'll like Cyber Sleuth (which from what I hear is a lot like Persona). Every one I've tried has been grindy as hell but Survive has an auto-battle feature and as long as you're using the main guys you shouldn't have much of a problem playing through the first time. If you choose Survive you'll want to play through at least twice for spoily reasons. What makes the franchise more fun for me is tying to figure out what my partner Digimon would be, how my personality would make them Digivolve and planning out how to get them in the games.

I prefer Digimon because the cast actually grew up with the audience of the show. Best way to start is with the movie Digimon Adventure (1999) its basically a prequel to the show. Keep with the main line series. In every series the cast grows up more in Digimon adventures season 1 they are the equivalent of 5th grade elementary school kids in Digimon Adventures season 2 they become middle schoolers and high schoolers and act as supporting characters for that seasons main cast. Then comes DIgimon Adventures Tri the original cast is center stage again and they are late high school early college age. Then cap it off with Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna (2020) and Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning.

As a long time fan (when it first aired on YTV, I cannot think the numbers it will make me feel elderly) part of the appeal to Digimon Adventure was "Babies First Portal Fantasy" and it definitely helped inspire a further love of the genre of Portal Fantasy (Not the same as Isekai if you ask me, but isekai anime are definitely a category of Portal Fantasy? I don't know if that makes sense.) A part of the appeal really is community, but not necessarily a large full fandom experience. The Etsy customizers definitely appeal to the part of Digimon that kept me fascinated for a long time and it was the potential for your own stories to be made? Adventure you had a partner digimon who was kind of like the concept of a daemon in His Dark Materials, a piece of yourself made manifest in a little friend who gets stronger and weaker depending on your connection. As a lonely kid that was super appealing. So the watch where you raise your own terriormon is like, just the potential the create a story about yourself and your little friend. A crest was like the character arc you wanted to take the fictional version of yourself on. a lot of the staying power with Digimon was the fact that canon often presented just enough for you to get the ingredients to make your own. Though it may be that I just found a bunch of other people similarly brainweird about OCs and custom lore building and fanfiction.

Digimon Data Squad was my favourite Digimon series. It was honestly the first Digimon series I got exposed to but my god did I love it. And I still do. The theme song is amazing and the digivolution music was so freaking hype. I love the premise of a secret police force who handle situations where digimon appear in the real world and cause havoc before the public gets exposed to the existence of digimon. It was probably the first serialised animated series I've ever watched I freaking binged that series. Sat in front of the TV for hours on end during the Digimon Data Squad marathon that was held a lot when I was younger. Looking back on it now there are some dubbing issues but it still holds up if you just accept the slight cringe. I love the characters, I love the story and I was freaking theorising who the freaking main character's dad was as a freaking 8 year old. Now that I think about it, this was probably the first time I theorised anything. I highly, highly recommend it. It's more mature compared to most of the Digimon series as the cast of characters mainly comprised of older teens to young adults. I'm also playing Cyber Sleuth rn. Barely touched it for probably nearly a year since I got it but I have gotten back into it a bit. Whenever I have the time. I'm looking forward in obtaining the Digimons shown in Digimon Data Squad. Because they were dope af and I love them.

You make a really good point about getting caught up in the idea of having to "catch up." You don't have to! Enjoying things in your own way should be just that: Enjoying it in the ways that you, as an individual, enjoy it. I grew up with Digimon Adventure 01 and 02, and I've still never watched Tamers, even though I'm sure I'd like it. I also grew up with Digimon World 4 on the Gamecube, and that game is a trainwreck, but it's fun anyway. I grew up playing with Tamagotchis and not the Digimon pets, but it should be noted that they're essentially just a re-skin to market to girls vs. boys in that regard. Fair warning that Digimon World Next Order is regarded as a pretty terrible game, but you might find your own things to like or dislike about it yourself. I'm someone who is really character-oriented when it comes to getting into media, so that's something that's always drawn me into the Digimon anime and some of the games (primarily Cyber Sleuth, since it has some pretty vibrant and fun characters). The anime always focused more on characters having full arcs and development, and that was my favourite part. It still is. I can understand there's a lot of aspects about Digimon that are hard to make you get into it as a new fan, since most of it is laden with references to the original series or references that are meant to be picked up by longtime fans. It kind of feels like they intentionally leave newcomers out of the loop sometimes. It kinda sucks, because I want to see more fresh ideas rather than continually regurgitating the original series. Ghost Game looks really promising and I like that they are starting to branch out more, but they are still laying out the references to the old stuff *really* heavily. I want to see them stray from that a little more. Small edit to add that my favourite thing from Digimon is actually a spin-off called "Appmon". I *highly* recommend it. It's kind of gimmicky, but if you like well-written characters and something that strays from the regular formula a bit more, it's something that's really dear to my heart.

I think your realization is so important, and it also took me way too long figuring the same thing out for myself in regards to other franchises. Every big franchise always has a ton of people who think they know what's the best place to start, but tastes differ, and just because something was the thing that wowed most people doesn't mean it is necessarily the right fit for your own personal taste and interests. Now, I've been a Digimon fan from the start so I never had an issue with that one, but Gundam was to me what Digimon seems to be to you - something that technically fits my interests (mecha) but I just kinda missed the train on it when everyone else fell in love with it. Everyone kept telling me the best way to enjoy Gundam is to simply start from the beginning. But turns out, a 1970s anime can be...pretty damn rough to get into in the 2020s. I only started enjoying it once I stopped caring about how "a REAL fan" is supposed to consume it. Literally one of the first ones I watched was their Gunpla spin-off, and I enjoyed it. It made me curious about the origin of the specific mechs, and from there, my interest naturally led me to consume other shows and parts of the franchise as well.

If you like shonens, I'd recommend Savers / Data Squad. It's got the most basic and at the same time the most exciting story imo. Sometimes less is more. It's the only season I've watched to the end as an adult that I remember. Tamers has its moments but I don't like the pacing. I get bored easily with it. Adventure has a pretty rough beginning and ending arc. The middle is still kinda nice. Keep your distance from every game. They're all not very polished and pretty experimental. Cyber-Sleuth is a decent entry for new fans, but boy the dialogues get on my nerves.

Seconding the recommendation for Savers. Its nature as a shonen makes it the most hype of the anime by far. I fell in love with Masaru from the first moment he punched a kaiju ten times his size in the face. Though, if you're up for a shonen, I'd actually recommend the *original manga,* V-Tamer. It's very old but it's some solid shonen and Taichi and Zero are an engaging duo.

Hey! This is great news, I'd like to hear more of your perspective on this franchise. I'd recommend watching two short movies: Digimon Adventure (20 minutes), a prequel to the original show, and Our War Game (40 min.), kind of a sequel to the og show. The stories are a bit more mature than the anime and the animation holds up beautifully. You could watch them together on Digimon: The movie, but don't bother watching that yet, the dub is silly and some parts have been cut to fit three movies in one.

Back in 1999, Digimon World 1 was my gateway into Digimon. Was already the biggest Pokemon knowledge nerd you could find back then, but I thought the cover of the PS1 game looked cool so gave it a shot. Then followed Adventure 1, Aventure 2, Tamers, and diving into making fan pages and joining web-rings (which was like social networking before modern social networks). It definitely was very hard to find any other Digimon fans outside of the internet, but Pokemon fans were everywhere. Most people just bash it outright calling it a clone of Pokemon, which I never personally found to be the case. I actually saw the commercials of the Digimon tamagotchi digivice things before I heard of Pokemon. The Adventure 1 anime may not have aged well, but back then it felt so much more mature than the Pokemon anime -- with characters dealing with relatable family issues. They felt almost like real people living out fantastical adventures every weekend morning on TV. Eventually fell of the series -- but always come back every once in a while out of nostalgia. In fact, as much as I am into Pokemon still (just got Scarlet/Violet and taught a few people how to play the TCG this week), I just got the urge to finally delve into the new Digimon Card game after watching your video.

I always liked Digimon growing up but was definitely more of a Pokemon person. However, that's flipped around completely thanks to the card game coming out. I was growing tired/burnt out of Magic and in need of a new hobby and it just so happened that the Digimon card game was coming out then. So I jumped into it and have never looked back. Then I started slowly going through the various media points that interested me. I've seen all the anime (aside from the reboot) and I stick by my stand point that the 5th season (Savers or Data Squad) is the best season and I recommend you give it a watch! Also, they are supposedly working on a new Digimon Story game, which I hope will be the launching point for the Bandai to thrust Digimon into the mainstream. I liked your approach and explanation about how to get into Digimon. It's a vast media franchise with maybe too many points of entry for its own good.

for the anime, I really recommend you checking the sub if you were watching the english dub. What they did to digimon is at the same level 4kids did to one piece. The only seasons I considere a waste to time, even more for a new viewer would be Digimon Frontier and Digimon Adventure 2020. For the games sadly there's not for you to chose. In the digimon story series the best one is Cyber sleuth (preferably the complete edition) and for the digimon world games, Digimon world re:digitze decode is also the best one. Digimon Survive's story is really good, but that one is like 75% visual novel 25% tactical rpg

Frontier and 2020 aren't wastes of time. Frontier is there if you like the gimmick, and Adventure2020 is pretty good, just so long as you aren't looking at it like a replacement for the original, which it clearly didn't try to do.

There are multiple new Digimon projects being worked on, including a new Story game with the Olympus mons. There was a gap of 8 years where we didn't get new anime (not including App Monsters), and now we are slowly getting a lot more products more frequently.

Tamers is a great series to start with. It's more mature with literally starting with half of the ensemble from previous seasons. Like it gets sad, keep at it and maybe have a good watch party with your nieces and nephews.

Massive digimon fan here- hell, I’m a channel artist for a digituber. I’m actively working on a piece for his next video even as I watch this. Digimon gets the short end of the stick in every possible regard. Our major direct gave us basically nothing and was put on a day where Pokémon was being celebrated, only serving to further smack it’s relevance. We want more. We always want more. The digimon fan artist community alone is active as all hell. If you want to talk to someone in depth about this subject though, I recommend trying to get into contact with Karn EX. Man’s one of the best digimon content creators to help ya out there. As an aside, gotta recommend Digimon savers. It’s sort of the meme season I’ll admit, but it has some of the best characters in the franchise, and not just because the protagonist gets to punch digimon pretty much uncontested.

this is a really good video and I can feel your paint wrt Bandai not doing enough to market the series. also getting any Digimon merch when you live in Europe is absolute pain, I have some of it but it was either imported or bought at a marked up price

I'm around your age, a few years younger and from Europe. I'm a bit surprised you didn't get into them as a kid, since they were huge in the early oughts, at least in Europe. I thought they were even bigger in the US. The original Digimon series definitely picks up steam aftet the first season. Tamers is an excellent choice to get into Digimon, though.

I rewatch the movie every couple of years. It's a comfort movie for me. I watched more then Shrek when I grew up, so All-star was a Digimon song for me.

I watched the Digimon anime as well as played a fighting game of it on the PS1 called Rumble Arena as a kid but did buy Cyber Sleuth when I first got my PS4 in 2016. There have been other franchises that caught my attention overs the years but I might look to get into Digimon a little more than I usually do. I am looking to buy the Vital Bracelet with Pulsemon soon when I get paid next. I also have a deck of Digimon cards as well.

Yes, please ignore gatekeeping fans. We DESPERATELY need new blood in the franchise especially outside of Japan just to even come close to convincing Bandai to take us seriously as consumers. I mean aside from the fact that there's literally nothing wrong with being new to a franchise/fanbase. Everyone should feel welcome, especially for a franchise that's so easily overwhelming to newcomers.

Thank you. As much as I was a Digimon fan as a child but dropped off due to them basically dropping off the map, I feel like the series became unapproachable but couldn't put a finger as to why. This entire video sums up on what my feelings and thoughts are in how I view the franchise.

Digimon is definitely a strange one, I got really into it but I will admit that even when first watching the shows (starting at adventure like you) I thought it was alright at best, and mostly stuck around because I loved the concepts and world. And another thing that is a blessing and a curse for a new fan is how for the most part only core concepts stay consistent between seasons and games, so while Adventure, 02, and Tri and in the same world, tamers, frontier, ghost game, Etc. All start over with a new interpretation of digimon and the digital world, and in a lot of ways that’s cool and keeps things fresh but it probably makes things confusing and alienating for new fans with every season being a reboot. As far the virtual pets I would recommend the Digital Monster X or Vital Bracelet/Hero as a starting point, everything else has an inflated price except the digital monster 20th which is good but you can’t pause and will likely die if you can’t bring it to work/school.

Tamers was really the best entry point for you if you enjoy stories. And, also a fair warning about Ghost Game: it's an episodic show first and foremost. There is an overarching narrative, but it's not the focus and tend to be left on the backseat for most of the time. Survive is either a hit or miss for most people from what I've seen. Personally, the first few hours of the game drag a little, but after the first fights the game starts to pick up the peace and becomes really enjoyable.

Yes I'd love to have a lot of new fans join in. I feel like the card game has been that force lately, lots of people who weren't into Digimon are picking it up and are starting to like it. Here's hoping the next Digimon Story game is a banger.

I say this every chance I get, even if I have to find a way to squeeze it into a conversation; Digimon has some of the best-looking artwork I've ever seen in a card game.

In terms of story, I would recommend the Digimon Xros Wars MANGA. Same characters as the anime, but different characterisation and story beats in the areas where it counts. It is probably the best digimon related story ever told, but I will have to say that I read it as an already long-time fan of Digimon. While the author themself said that it was the first digimon related thing they ever worked on, they did watch all the previous seasons, read all the manga, and played the games for prepwork, and it SHOWS. For this reason, your mileage may wary. But for a manga with only 22 chapters, it is not a slog to read through and has some genuinely good storytelling.

as someone who grew up watching digimon as multi-part 240p youtube uploads, alongside a copy of digimon world ds as a rom on my r4 card, digimon is the sorta franchise where you can kinda just show up/jump in whenever/wherever and try to get into it, without worrying about what you’re starting with ^_^’

From the perspective of a lifelong fan I will say that there's never really been a better time to be a Digimon fan in the west. The fact that the Vital Hero even exists when the original Vital Bracelet was never planned for global release is amazing and a testament to what the fandom is capable of (despite my very vocal bias against the Vital Hero). I get your point about it feeling like there could be a bigger push and more focus and all I can really say is that the fans need to stay invested. We have the VH and US releases of many new v-pets, and even the card game, only because of fans who imported it to their regions. Fans who showed Bandai that we really do want these products. And it really is a great community. I have a bunch of friends who I can talk about various aspects of the franchise with and that's amazing. As for what might get you more invested; check out some local events for the TCG, at least in my area they're really fun, and maybe pick up Survive (I also haven't finished it yet). And if you like a more involved version of raising your Digimon the v-pets are great
