Saaaame! I rarely DNF a book. I do consider myself a mood reader, but for me, that means I decide what book to pick next based on mood. There is no agenda.

Exactly! I used to be more of a mood reader and back then I actually couldn't read more than 1 book at a time, but I would finish that one book really quickly and binge series all the time. Now I read multiple books at once because I plan it carefully (so they are different formats and genres) and it takes me longer to get through series because I'd already planned to read something else after I finish the book I'm on.

Yes. Same. I don’t often DNF. And if I decide, 10 pages in, that it’s not for me, it’s not because I’m not in the mood. It’s usually because it’s not interesting to me and I won’t pick it up again ever

As a mood reader, for me it really comes down to ‘does this feel like a chore, or am I having fun’ if a book starts to feel like a chore and I’m only reading it ‘because I think I have to’ then I put it down and read something else. But if I’m having fun (regardless of 5 star or not) I finish it!

Absolutely. It's true that I fail at book clubs and reading challenges that are too restrictive (read a book with a left-handed cowboy) because then it starts to feel like work. Nothing throws me into a reading slump faster than feeling forced to finish a book I'm hating.

Being a mood reader is ultimately just reading what you're in the mood for. I'm a mood reader to the core; tell me I need to read something specific for a challenge or prompt and my entire being will reject it 🙃 . And I am usually reading 5 books at once! An audio book, a digital book, a nonfiction, and a couple fiction physical. If I enjoy a book I'll finish it, even if it'll be a high 3 star or more. I draw the line around 2 stars. It's no longer worth my time.

This is how I mood read too! I did not relate to very many things on the book riot list Kayla read at the beginning. I used to push through books even after I realized I was despising them and would just hate-read them through to the end, but I have gotten better about DNFing more quickly when I realize a book is a total waste of time. To me being a mood reader is less about starting and stopping books left and right, and more about not planning my reading ahead further than about a week.

I have had as many as 7 books going at once (recently)...admittedly that is overkill and it stresses me out if it goes that far. I'll usually start focusing on one or two books to get my working list shorter. Usually though, I have at least an audiobook, a Kindle book, and a print book going at the same time. Sometimes I throw in a short story collection as well. If I find I've gotten to a point in a book where I'm really hooked, all else is shoved aside until I finish it. I may have an idea of what I want my next book to be and/or a loose TBR, but at the end of the day, I read what I'm drawn to in the moment.

I'm a mood reader through and through. Mood reading, for me, doesn't mean DNFing an imperfect book. It's not about reading multiple books at once. It's about reading what I feel like reading, and not forcing myself to read things I don't want to read in the moment. That said, I will force myself to finish okay books, so long as they aren't bad. Sometimes I am in the mood to read a book to specifically fulfil a reading challenge prompt. Sometimes it's about my literal mood, my emotional needs. Sometimes it's about genre, or tropes, or character types, or settings. There's no real one way to mood read. Someone who does specific TBRs all the time could be said to be mood reading because they are in the mood to follow the TBR. It's variable.

As a mood reader I’ve never had an issue with starting and stopping books. I can only read one book at a time, whatever book I am in the mood for. I finish a book and only then can I pick up another one. I get into moods and can only read something I’m in the mood for. For example, I get into a romance mood and read solely romance for 2 months. The worst is when I can’t figure out what I’m in the mood for so I end up reading nothing because nothing feels right

That Book Riot article really went out of its way to define mood reading in negative terms. Their points are all technically true, but they only included negatives and made it sound like mood reading is the worst(?) version of reading. I'm excited to see the rest of the video and your discoveries, Kayla, I'm just sorry you were given those particular bullet points at the start of this challenge.

I also wasn't vibing with the Book Riot article all that much. There are definitely some books I pick up simply for entertainment purposes as a mood reader. However, if the book is making some poignant statements I'm definitely putting my thinking cap on for it. But this choice heavily depends on whether I have the emotional/mental energy for it.

@@BooksandLala Thanks for the reply, and looking for a popular definition of mood reading was a great way to start the vlog! I just thought the article focused unduly on what mood readers don't do (challenges, book clubs, finishing books) to the point of being inaccurate ("a mood reader is someone who has many books they haven't finished"). Mood reading isn't a lack of structure, in my experience, the mood part *is* the structure! If I read what I want to when I have the time, I will read many more books than if I tried to impose outside rules onto my reading. All our brains are wired differently, and this vlog was great to watch because it's fun to see someone look critically at the way they structure their reading experience.

Sometimes I'm like "I really need to read something fantastical right now" and other days I want romance with NO fantasy elements and some days I wake up thinking I'm gonna solve a mystery. It's like an itch that *needs* scratched to be happy. The amount of hours I have spent just staring at my shelves waiting for something to call to me.....

as a mood reader, I loved this video concept. it's so interesting watching someone *try* to mood read. but also as a mood reader, I hardly ever dnf books (maybe that's just me?). I basically stare at my shelves (and library holds) and grab a stack of books that I think i'm in the mood for at that moment. and then I choose whichever one stands out the most. Usually they all fit just one specific mood, but sometimes I'll be in the mood for multiple things, and my stack will reflect that.
@BeautifulDauntless
@BeautifulDauntless Жыл бұрын
I think what non mood readers don't get is that there are no rules when it comes to mood reading. If someone wants to mood read, don't follow guidelines of an article, because in that way you are already structuring your reading.😅 I think mood reading starts with the question "am I in the mood to read?" (which might sound weird for "TBR readers" 🤭). And if you want to read, you just pick up whatever is calling to you the most. It's like you are following your heart and not your brain.😁 I'd say it is easier to become a "TBR reader" than a mood reader, because in a way mood readers can also organize their reading. I do seasonal TBRs where I gather a bunch of books that I'm in the mood for and I pick up whatever I want in the moment. And the other thing is that I think it varies how people mood read. I don't like reading multiple books at once, I like focusing on one (except if I read a fiction and a nonfiction book). So the general description of a mood reader doesn't apply to everyone, but it kinda gives an example of a certain type of a mood reader. That's all folks, that was my TED talk.😂

I hate DNFing but if I'm not loving something, I'm not gonna be in the mood to pick it up often but I WILL finish it eventually lol. I just have at least 5 books that I'm reading at once 😅 and always a minimum of three because I'll be reading something physical, ebook, and audio because half my mood reading is what format I'm wanting to read
@myndolin
@myndolin Жыл бұрын
@@kate-ne Same for me. My biggest consideration outside of what I'm the mood for is the source and format. So I'll look at my stack of library books, audiobooks, owned Kindle books, owned print books, galleys - whichever category I think I'm due next, and I pick something that calls to me. Having a TBR of books I'm interested in IS helpful to me, but it's not a to do list as much as a list of options.

Being a mood reader is really just about letting your mood guide your TBR rather than having set plans. It’s not really starting and stopping books at random. That said, I used to let my mood fully guide my reads and seemed to go through frequent reading slumps because of it. This year, I set a monthly “TBR menu.” I select what I’m feeling, but only within the bounds of what’s on the menu. This has really helped me stay focused on my reading goals and motivated to read daily!

I really hate DNFing books and I can't read more than one book at a time. Honestly I admire how you're able to stick to your plans and schedule, I can never do that for anything (even beyond reading) I just have to decide in the moment, and sometimes it involves going through all of my TBR and holding them and asking myself "is this the one" until I finally get the "right" feeling. I think mood reading is such an interesting concept and there are a lot of misconceptions - as well as different versions, of course. I mean, 10 people could probably describe their mood reading in 10 different ways. I am a list and planning sort of person, so I do make monthly TBRs to narrow down books that pique my interest. The TBR generally consists of 20+ books, even though I only read 8-10 books a month, so that I can pick and choose depending on how I feel throughout the month. And sometimes I end up taking a bunch of books off that list and adding news ones because I've changed my mind. I also very rarely put down a book to read something else unless I'm genuinely not enjoying it or something like that. I mean, watching TV or movies is pretty much always "mood watching". I've never known of anyone who makes a list of what to watch on TV or forces themselves to watch something. You just pick what sounds good in the moment! So I kind of chuckle when some people make mood reading seem like a complex or strange concept 😂 At the end of the day, if I want to read something, I'm not going to make myself wait just because I already have a list of books to read. Or if I have something on my list and I decide I'm not in the mood, I'm not going to force myself to read it. That's all!
@heyimsasa

this is so exciting! i'm a mood reader so this is a cool idea for me to watch you do. it's the reason why i can never stick to a tbr, follow readathons, and buddy reads are hard for me to keep up with. however, i always stick to one book and i try not to dnf unless i really hate it and i'm at risk of putting myself through a reading slump. so far, that's what's worked out for me. i've had very few dnf's because of this method. my mood reading-ness is also why i LOVE readathons and book clubs that have very loose rules like "read a book with a [trope/prompt]." those are really fun for me because i'm hitting the readathon goals + following my mood.

I’m a mood reader and I feel like you overthought what a mood reader is. For me being a mood reader just means reading what sounds good to me in the moment rather than having a set list I HAVE to stick to, etc. No mood reader is the same in how they’d handle it and not every mood reader can have 10 books going at once though. I get overwhelmed reading two books at once and am a completionist in the sense that once I start a book I usually want to finish it asap. I personally can’t put books down and pick them back up on a regular basis, but I know a lot of other people who do. It just depends. Some of the criteria the internet said you need to match to be a mood reader just sounded like pure chaos to me lol.

I am a mood reader, and your description of how you choose what books to read stressed me out 😂. I just sit in front of my bookshelf and wait for a book to speak to me. I do read 5+ books at once and have a lot of books on my shelf that I started and never finished because it wasn't the right time to read it. My reading is very influenced by the weather, and if I try to tell myself to read something for any reason (book club, content, challenges, etc.), I won't do it 🙃 The best part of being a mood reader though is an almost spiritual alignment when you read the right book at the right time. Nothing compares.

I'm definitely a mood reader but I would define it differently. I'm almost always reading around five books at a time because sometimes I am in the mood for horror, sometimes, romance, sometimes sci fi, etc. and being able to put a book down and pick up another that hits just the right spot is very freeing for me. As long as the books aren't too similar in content, plot, or characteristics I have no trouble keeping them apart in my mind.

Also, the stuff you are in the mood for shows where your passion lays with books, hard hitting conversations and horror. I enjoyed this introspective vlog. Thank you!

I mean this lovingly. watching a logic oriented reader overanalize the "proper" way to mood read was extremely entertaining. 😆 honey, you're overthinking it. Pick a book read till you don't want to anymore (doesn't have to be the best book ever) and then put it down.

I loved this video! You are the most Type A person I've ever seen and watching you mood read....*chef's kiss*. When you're standing in front of your shelf saying, "I don't know what I'm in the mood for!" As a mood reader, I can tell you.....exactly! Yes! That's why you have to stand in front of them and mind meld with each one until a connection is made. 😂 I wish I could read like you! Enjoying reading constantly and finishing books in a day or two never getting sick of it?! I can't even imagine that...

I am an absolutely chaotic mood reader in the sense I will pick up a book, read almost all of it, but if I'm suddenly bored or over it, I will DNF it. Sometimes I start a book with the intention of finishing it but get sidetracked with other books and completely forget I was reading the book but at that point I have no interest in it. I have tried to be an organized, on-a-schedule-reader and I just can't do it. It makes me feel.... claustrophobic? Definitely not the right word I'm looking for but the closest I can think of to how it makes me feel. I admire an organized reader because it can't be me 🤣 Edited to add I definitely don't re-read. Can't even remember the last time I've re-read a book.

I'm a mood reader, but it's so hard to describe what that means! I do typically read several books at once (I'm currently in the middle of seven books), but I don't think that is necessarily what makes a mood reader per se. Sometimes it means that I'm craving a particular genre or trope, so I seek out those genres or tropes. And sometimes it means that I suddenly am sick of a genre and need to take a break from it for a book or two before the mood returns. My "tbr" (which is really just a list of books that intrigue me) is suuuuuper long, as are my Libby holds, because that way I usually have something in reach for whatever strikes me (I don't purchase books that I haven't read and loved, to try to keep a budget, so I am a little more reliant on the Libby gods in that regard). I'm always mystified by readers like you, who have a tbr and can stick to it. An actual tbr is destined to fail for me. It's fun to see that we mood readers are a bit mystifying to you! Thanks for trying the experiment and sharing with us!

I try being organized and make tbr lists but I fail them almost every time! Mood reading is soooo much easier for me, and I definitely love being a mood reader because it means I can read whatever I want whenever I want and that's just such freedom! Mood reading is just the best but all reading is great! 📚

I found this so interesting. I've always considered myself a mood reader but I rarely ever DNF. I just don't preselect what I'm going to read or how many books I'm going to read. When I finish a book and it's time to start a new one, I pick whatever jumps out at me without feeling the need to stick to a planned tbr. Then I may or may not like the book, butI'll generally finish it and then I pick the next book that jumps out at me at that moment. For me, mood reading just means I'm not following a plan.

I think as a mood reader I’m more likely to do what you did - read the first chapter of a book to see if I’m “in the mood” to read it - rather than being someone that frequently DNF’s books halfway through. if I’m slogging through a read and only want to finish it out of spite, I probably will eventually, but u can BET I’ll also start a new one and, like, finish it in a day. motivation is slippery !!

for me, being a mood reader is about following whims whenever i feel them. if i am in the middle of a book and a new book i'm super excited about comes out, i will put my current read on hold, read the new release and then finish the second half of the book i was reading earlier. i am also one of those people who have no problem with being in the middle of several books at once 😅

Mood reading is weird, I never know what I’m going to read next, and choose based on just… feeling. I look at my collection until a book ~calls to me~, then try it out, and from the first words that I read I can tell if is going to work or not. Also, my mood can change before I actually finish the book, so yeah, I’m technically reading 7 books right now, but really I’m reading 2. If I try to plan my reading ahead, I can do it for like Readathons for… about 5 books, but the reading slump will come if I keep doing it for too long 🫠

This describes me as a mood reader for sure! Including the bit about planning TBRs for readathons (or book clubs or content) - I can do it but if I do it too much or for too long without a break, I’m gonna end up in a reading slump.

I’m a mood reader but I only read one book at a time. If I’m in the mood for a thriller, that’s what I pick up. If I’m in the mood for a fantasy, I pick one up. Sometimes I will put a book down if I’m not enjoying it but almost always pick it back up when I’m in the mood for that specific genre and end up loving it. Mood reading to me is not having multiple books on the go but just reading with no agenda. I envy those who can make and stick to a monthly tbr. I can’t make tbrs and stick to them because I never know what genre I want to pick up until I’m hunting for my next new book.

I would consider myself a mood reader, but I’m also a very type A person. I love the concept of creating a TBR but I typically can’t/don’t stick with it. My “mood reading” usually just means that the way I pick out what to read next is based on whatever catches my attention at the moment. I almost always finish the book regardless of rating unless I just HATE it.

Chronic moodreader here. (Editing to say I also have ADHD, so that really doesn't help) I won't stop a book because I feel like I won't give it five stars, especially if I'm enjoying the book! I usually DNF because I don't like the writing style or I didn't read the synopsis completely and didn't realize what the content was (i.e. too triggering, boring subject, etc). But the times that I've been very deep into the book and just wanted to quit but kept reading to finish it, I've come out with some kind of disdain for the book. Not a bad book, it's just like overeating to clear the plate and having a stomachache later.

Your definition of a Mood Reader is way different and deeper from mine 🤣 For me; it's just picking up the next read without planning, just picking the most interesting or most excited for at that time. I could never be a mood reader. I'm not as strict as you. But I /need/ to have an idea of my next 2-3 books at least. I don't have to follow through (I usually do though) but I need a lil list of what I might read next.

I like to make up TBR's for challenges, but then I don't always feel like I am in the mood to read those specific challenge books. I may have to give up doing any challenges for the rest of my life!!!! LOL. I love browsing for books online. When I do browse online, any books that interest me go onto my wish list. When I am ready to buy, I only buy from my wish list!! This system has worked very well for me for the last 5+ years.

Mood reading really is just that-- being in the mood for what you're reading! Sometimes that just looks like one genre but with multiple authors. Sometimes it looks like a ton of DNFs as well as maybe five or six completed reads in a row. I'm definitely glad that you got to experiment with mood reading, even though it didn't end up looking like you envisioned.

It‘s so funny to me that we‘re polar opposites but you‘re still one of my favourite booktuber’s. I‘m a mood reader and can‘t stick to a tbr if my life depended on it. And one of my favourite things to do is to go to a bookshop and browse for hours. Without any idea what I want or need. Also our reading tastes are vastly different. I‘m an adult epic / high fantasy girlie and although one of my favourite genres is horror our tastes don‘t align. But your vibes and videos are so cozy and heartwarming that I love watching your channel.

i feel like that article in the beginning paints mood reading in a pretty bad light. at its core it just means figuring out what you're in the mood for, and then reading that thing. for me that means alternating genres. oftentimes i'll read a historical fiction and then be in the mood for some lighthearted summer contemporary. it keeps things fresh for me. But mood reading also means dnf-ing books you don't enjoy reading. this helps mental health, since there's no pressure to finish the book you started, which also lowers the entry point for reading. There's no daunting mountain of pages, because if you don't enjoy reading those pages... you just don't. you stop. it's something so freeing when our society tells us being a "quitter" is such a bad, negative thing. but quitting things you don't enjoy opens up so much more availability to fill with things you DO enjoy.

So I am absolutely a mood reader. To me it is more like “what vibes do I feel like?” Even if I am not loving a book, I don’t DNF it unless I don’t like it. I don’t count a book that I am not enjoying as not being in the mood for it. The best way I describe it for me is “what am I inspired to actually sit down and read?” Just like you would ask yourself “what do I want for dinner?”

I am such a mood reader. For the month of February, I committed to only reading from Black authors. I went through my owned TBR and pulled out everything by a Black author that I was interested in reading. Then I had a book club selection. I read 2 books from that planned TBR. Pushed out the book club because I couldn't make myself read the selection. To sum up: not allowing myself to mood read but me in a slump.

as a mood reader this does sound ridiculous 😅 my steps are 1) pick a book and read (i.e. "it's calling to me") or 2) first chapter test and read **the first** 10/10 (or whatever's highest), rather than going thru my whole shelf lol
