Becoming a Native Knowledge 360° Educator: Is a Treaty Intended to be
Forever?
How do we teach about treaties and their relevance today? In this professional development program, educators will apply the National Museum of the American Indian's Becoming an NK360° Educator framework: Spark, Connect, Learn, and Act to the topic of treaties. In an effort to protect and preserve their people and cultures, Native Nations often made sacrifices and signed treaties with other sovereign nations, including the United States. Using an inquiry-based approach, we’ll examine the importance of treaties as primary source documents in your classroom.
Native Knowledge 360° (NK360°) provides educators and students with new perspectives on Native American history and cultures. Most Americans have only been exposed to part of the story, as told from a single perspective through the lenses of popular media and textbooks. NK360° provides educational materials, virtual student programs, and teacher training that incorporate Native narratives, more comprehensive histories, and accurate information to enlighten and inform teaching and learning about Native America. NK360° challenges common assumptions about Native peoples and offers a view that includes not only the past but also the vibrancy of Native peoples and cultures today. Learn more: americanindian...
