Do you recommend a certificate or an associates. I’m actually perusing a business degree and wonder how to get a job as a paralegal
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
It depends on your market. Are you in a big city or small town. Having an Associates Degree is more versatile than a Certificate. However, it truly comes down to your market. I would encourage you to do some research on PayScale.com for your area regarding pay, and take a look at the requirements in ads for Paralegal jobs in your area. With that research, you should have a better understanding of what path to take for your job market - will a degree suit you better than just a Certificate. Of course, good luck to you in all that you do. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!

Now things might get back to normal I'm thinking of trying to go back out in the field and start trying out some firms. Im excited for the opportunities this may provide in the future! Would you recommend I still get my certificate while doing the job just in case for other jobs or opportunities?
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on the offer. What an exciting opportunity for you! Getting a certificate is really up to you and depends on where you live and want to work. In small cities, a certificate usually isn't needed, required, and can be a waste of time and money. However, in larger cities, a certificate is great and likely to be required. To give an example, while having a Certificate to be a Paralegal in Illinois isn't required, many top Chicago firms have it built into their firm policies that certificates or a degree are required. No matter what ..... shoot for the stars, and congrats again on your amazing opportunity.

I like your informative videos. I have years of experience in security services, a college certificate in business management and criminal justice, and I'm looking into going to Blackstone Career Institute for the paralegal program in the near future. I live in California. Blackstone is a 30 credit certificate program and prepares you for the Nala certification which is widely accepted. California wants at least 24 credits in paralegal education. What do you think about Blackstone Career Institute?
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words about my videos! It sounds like you have a solid foundation with your experience in security services and your educational background in business management and criminal justice. I'm not personally familiar with the specific details of Blackstone Career Institute, but from what you've described, it seems to fit the requirements for California and prepares you for the NALA certification, which is a great asset. Ultimately, my best advice is to pursue your dreams and career aspirations in a way that feels right for you. It's clear you've done your research and have a strong foundation to build upon. Go with what aligns with your goals and feels like the best fit for your journey. Wishing you all the best in your paralegal endeavors! Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!

No experience but all of the other foundational skills you mentioned and more. Of course I rolled my eyes and said "Ok, I wiiiiill." Drug my arse for a couple days because I didn't believe that person and...eventually, I did...So far, I really love it and am actively planning to relocate to be near the firm once it reopens, post COVID-19, everything remotely right now. I'm setting up my formal ed as well. I truly feel like THIS is the beginning of the rest of my life. Looking forward to it - challenges and rewards as well as tuning into more of your inspirational videos. Love your vibes, woman! Keep up the good work and PLEASE keep 'em coming!!!!

Healthy boundaries are necessary for everyone all the time. I've seen too many people burn out with extreme mental health issues because they didn't set any boundaries. @ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
Food industry .... can you expand on that? If it was service-based, then your customer service skills would be an asset and work great in a Paralegal position for a areas like family law, personal injury, and criminal defense. Attorneys struggle to find Paralegals who can easily and effectively communicate with their clients. When you come from a service-based (customer driven) background, it transitions quite well into the Paralegal career. Good luck to you!

Is a paralegal career good for an introvert person?
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray2 жыл бұрын
Sure it is. I would go into an area of law that doesn't have heavy involvement with clients directly. Introverts gain energy from quiet reflection and solitude, which probably means lots of research and writing in your legal career. My story is very much like yours. I started as a receptionist, after a few years, got my own office and considered myself a legal assistant. I now work at a different firm and my co-workers have formal paralegal education. They attended a program that is ABA approved. They received a paralegal certificate and then passed a test to become certified. I feel like they would be offended if i use the title “paralegal”. I will be going to school even though I’m 31 and feel super old. I need to have this title, I deserve it.

Don’t feel old! I just started a paralegal certificate program and I’m 55!! Talking about old! You’re all good. 😊

Joined your FB. I'm finishing up a degree in sociology and now realize that I don't exactly want to work in Social Work. I have thought a lot about Paralegal, specifically Family Law. But have no idea how to get started. I interviewed at a law firm a couple of years ago for a receptionist position but I didn't get a call back. That's as close as I got. Seems like many places require experience.

Don't give up - keep trying. Many of us Paralegals got in on the ground level and scaled our careers up, up, up. Get in with some temp or staffing agencies. They are fantastic at placing folks just like you at law firms. In fact, I've got a video coming out this Friday interviewing another Paralegal that got her first file clerk job that way - through a temp agency. So, don't give up. Rather, pivot your search and expand your circle, which you did by joining my FB group. So much to come in that group that will be announced this weekend, and I think you're going to REALLY benefit from it. Good luck, hang in there, and stay healthy! Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!

I'm 31 years old and recently discovered that I don't want to continue with my current career. I majored in political science and worked my way through a few jobs to where I am now, a marketing campaign manager. I feel like my interests, education, and experience fit well into the paralegal role. Do I need any further education?
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
Did you get a degree in Political Science? You might want to check into an ABA approved certification program, depending on the legal market in your area. Good luck to you! Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!

What if I am bilingual for speaking in Spanish and reading, however I'm not as good writing for writing, I can do it but not as good. What can I do to better my self. How can I prepare myself with paralegal documents and words for Spanish?
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
If you're bilingual, then you've got a golden ticket because the legal industry NEEDS YOU! Areas of law like Immigration, Debt Collection, Bankruptcy, Personal Injury, Workers Compensation, and many more need you. Don't give up! Download the app Grammerly and start writing. Grammerly will help you fine-tune your writing skills. I also recommend taking an online English class, and search on platforms like Udemy, Skillshare, Thinkific, and Teachable to expand your writing and English skills. Taking it one step further, you should register as an interpreter for the local bar or other companies in your area that offer interpreter services. It is a great way to make passive income and can even get your foot in the door at a law firm. Good luck and don't give up ---- this industry needs people just like you :-)

I got my foot in the door at a top law firm. Never had any legal experience. BUT I would love to move up in the company. Thinking of being a paralegal or legal Secretary. Not sure what to do lol. Some people saying you don't need a degree but than most says you do.
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, a degree is specific to your market. In other words, if you're working in big cities like Chicago, NYC, LA, etc., then a degree would definitely be helpful (and likely needed). In fact, some law firms in Chicago have specifically written degree requirements into their internal policies and procedures outlining suitable candidates. However, in smaller cities, such as Oklahoma City, a degree for being a Paralegal isn't required and isn't helpful (when it comes to salary). In smaller markets, on-the-job experience will hold more weight than a degree. Good luck to you in all that you do!

It all depends on the market where you live I hear people saying that you don’t need certifications but good luck finding jobs posted where that isn’t a requirement. I live Baton Rouge and while it isn’t a big city every single job will expect you to have an associates in paralegal studies or a bachelors. Look up jobs in your area to see if this is also the case where you live

whats the latest on getting foot in the door with several years experience AND B.S. legal studies degree but WITHOUT having NALA certification and Fl certification. I havent worked in a number of years but after personal changes need to geo back to work. Seems like having my certficiation (national) would certainly be a feather in my hat that would help open some doors. Any thoughts?

What about having a felony on your record. I have completely turned my life around. Law fascinates me. But, I am so afraid of only being judged by what's in black and white. On a resume or application, these days we are judged in the employment struggle by our mistakes.It's not the old hand shake meeting of getting to get a feel for a person. The internet is very unforgiving. I just can't seem to find the answer but not willing to give up. I am an extremely hard worker, organized. Although I am ashamed of the mistakes I have made, they have made me stronger and I have learned so much. I also feel that expunging or sealing my record is a form of hiding the truth. This feels wrong. Do you think I could still work in this field? Would recommend sealing or expunging my records?

Solid! I’m in the final year of my active duty Army contract and basically got put on the back burner a few months ago (not doing my job). I happened to be at JAG this morning and asked one of the attorneys if they were in need of any paralegal/assistant help (sometimes the military will have special duty for individuals who are willing to volunteer). He had me leave my information with the receptionist and then she took it to the person in charge. I’m hoping to get at least a few months at JAG before I’m allowed to look for an internship at a law firm. DEFINITELY ready to put in the work, because remote paralegal is the goal! You are proof that hard work and initiative still pays off!

Understanding work hours are likely subjective and relate directly to the firm, specialization, etc., is there a ballpark work week in terms of hours? Are most paralegal jobs in-person vs. remote (assume in-person)? Also, I assume existence of work/life balance is completely firm dependent?

May I ask how should I approach getting a intern as a paralegal I'm getting my paperwork to go to school but want to get real world experience aswell
@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray4 жыл бұрын
Great question! "Intern" positions are usually reserved for college students enrolled in an ABA Paralegal Certification program. Having said that, you could still get your foot in the door by other means - runner, file clerk, receptionist, secretary, etc. Take a look into some temp agencies, and of course, good luck to you! Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate you!

@@ArrowConsultants_MistyMurray You do not need to go to ABA, ABA just means it conforms to the library size. There are multiple programs which are great, and actually are pre law programs!

I am even tri-lingual: Russian, Ukrainian and English, and the profession of Paralegal drew my attention because I saw that there was a great demand for the Native proficiency in these Slavic languages in the UK. But unfortunately most of law firms insist in relocating to London for obtaining a Paralegal job and deny the possibility of remote work format from another country. But as I know, the cost of living in London is very high, there are also high taxes there. and moreover, it is very difficult to immigrate the UK with the right for non-physical labour (Visa Tier 2). So I am at the crossroads now: to change my life from freelance linguist to paralegal, from Ukraine to the UK or not? That is why it is extremely interesting for me to listen your story and your explanation of this profession new for me.
