In that moment, I understood that war is not only about gunfire and explosions; it is also a struggle for the human within us, even in the darkest moments.

Ever now and then we would find that one of the guys who were shooting at us was from the americas or Western Europe who ran away from home to join extremist groups. The vast majority were losers who spent all their time in incel echo chambers online easily radicalized into whatever anyone tells them. The boys get sent out as cannon fodder and the girls are usually either forced into marriage with a leader or made into a cell’s “morale booster”. If they survive contact with us they’re generally arrested and sent back to wherever they came from.
