It's funny how when Alistair becomes king, he IMMEDIATELY tells u "sorry babe we gotta break up cuz they expect me to have a kid and wife" meanwhile in the epilogue where Anora is queen, it says she didn't marry b/c nobody measured up to her dad...double standard much? Thats why I don't really take the breakup seriously. I don't think anyone would object to the king marrying the hero of ferelden, but ok bioware ..... we'll take your word for it....

I could see Ferelden having a problem with some HoFs being monarch. They are very anti-elf and anti-mage. A noble dwarf probably should be able to marry King Alistair as well though. The stronger ties to Orzammar would be a plus, especially with Bhelen on the throne since it's going to further trade and surface connection. I don't get why Alistair can't name the appropriate successor though (perhaps Guerrin heirs). Alistair could also remain unmarried while keeping the warden as an acknowledged consort or paramour (like Vivienne was in DAI). If Celene can avoid marrying and stay with Briala, so could Alistair with the warden. A morganatic marriage would be another option (where the HoF's only title related to this would be spouse or consort to the king, not princess or queen). Even if we assume that Ferelden is less accepting of official consorts, the warden could still have a 'secret' relationship with Alistair without him acting like he needs to get with someone else. If he didn't need to marry someone else and he could name an heir upon his death, he also probably shouldn't need to be hardened.

You can Marry him if you're a female Cousland and become queen. You just can't marry him if you're an elf because you're an elf and that would be an issue to not only your own racist citizens and nobles, but most likely foreign nobles as well. If you're a human mage it is because magic can never rule man, only serve or whatever that Chantry garbage is. I don't know if you can romance Alistair as a female dwarf, but that would probably follow in the same footsteps as an elven warden anyway.

Alistair here will really repeat the story of his brother and father. Cailan had mistresses, he was discreet about them, but Anora knew. She could tell Loghain and who knows if angry father didn't decide to throw his unfaithful son-in-law under the darkspawn bus. It wasn't the only reason obviously, but it could be one of factors. Maric had Fiona, a mage and that's how Alistair was born in the first place.

I like to imagine that my character is a queen in everything but name. I love historical dramas and when English and French kings have a mistress she often ends up with more or equal power to the queen. Especially if he has no queen, in this case and if my character is chancellor. Everyone knows the only reason they aren't married is because she's an elf mage. So it works out pretty nicely. I even imagine they have little elf human babies on the side--hush hush I know that's not cannon xD

Remember, you have to harden him during his personal quest: After you visited Goldanna, you have to tell him that "everyone looks out for themselves, you should learn that" Then you get this option. Oh btw, Harden Alistair and THEN go to the pearl to meet Izabella at the pearl, if you'd like you could get an interesting conversation :D

My second play through I was knifed in the back when the relationship with Zevran goes nowhere basically. I want through a difficult time with this game and marrying Alistiar is my only possible option after so many heartbreaks. platypiisaweirdword Because the Cousland name helps legitimize his reign and its nearly as valuable as an heir. The Couslands were well respected among the nobility and it helps smooth over that whole "bastard no one heard of until now" issue that Alistair has among them.

I personally like mistress ending more than queen one. It's more bittersweet and still quite romantic. People keep saying its degradating, but Warden isn't another pretty face, but one of the most powerful women in Ferelden especially as a Chacellor. You don't have to worry about being replaced if you don't give Alistai children (like Eamon tried to do with Anora).

The point is it dont't matter wether it is fair or not and wether we like it or not. The world is rather unfair by nature and there are things we cannot change. We must face the reality in this situation. Alistair marring an elf, dwarf or mage will not be accepted by the nobility and the people of Ferelden. Even when you are the hero you cannot change the mind of everyone. You can only improve it. But a marrige will be seen as extremly egoistic by Alistair and his love. Kings and Queens have to marry for the wellbeing of the country and it's stability and power. What will the country do if it seems as if the King will set his personal interests about his country. He only gains his power from the landsmeet and the nobility of it gains its power from the people. Angering one party will bring the King to fall. Nobody knows that Alistair and his cousland Queen are infertile. But the marriage will provide the most stability for the moment and to bei fair Cousland does'nt know either when she announces it in the middle of the landsmeet without asking Alistair before and so he just can't say no. He will also try to break up with Cousland when she does'nt because of the heir problems unless you convince him of you beeing his mistress which is the only realistic and possible way for Alistair and his non noble lover to be happy. Beeing the King's mistress and not his queen does'nt change the meaning of your love and relationship. Marrying is'nt necessary for a love to be true.

Onestly, after reading in DA2 and DAI how much he was ostracized as king (codex entries) because many believed this bastard heir of Maric's was a fake thing orchestrated by Eamon, i don't make Alistair King anymore. He's way happier as a Grey Warden, especially if the Warden romanced him. The only balanced non ostracized outcome is if he marries Anora, so basically the same as Anora rules alone... I just can't bring myself to do that dirty to him, man. Even with male Wardens.

Well, you COULD ask for a title and riches as a mage when Alistair/Anora asks you if there is any boon you'd request from the King/Queen, but you're already dumped by that point, so even if you had a title, it wouldn't matter. :P

AndyG94, even if you're "Queen Cousland", it's basically the same situation of Alistair ruling alone because the Warden isn't around for any of her court duties. She goes to deal with the Darkspawn threat in Awakening and then briefly returns to Court before it's revealed in Inquisition that she is out looking for a cure to the Calling. Basically, your Warden is absent for a majority of the time she/he is supposed to be "ruling", which is why I never make Warden rule with Anora/Alistair in any canon stories. My first canon is Alistair and Anora ruling together with no ritual and Loghain dying to the Archdemon. My second canon is with Alistair as the Grey Warden and lover of the HoF.

Alistair is a Grey Warden too, so he might be unable to have children, and it's said that Anora is barren. Maybe Bioware plan something for Ferelden that involves a war of succession, or some other turmoil that requires a lack of king on the throne.

I actually re-loaded my save after making him solo-king today. When he comes into the room and starts talking about how he has been made king against his will and then starts talking about commitments, duties and not being able to romance you anymore because of kingly duties. He even tops it off with saying he'd trade it in for 'what he really wants'. I felt friggin guilty. The strange part is that when I chose the first time around I didn't ask him for his opinion. When I did ask him the second time before the final choice he says 'you should not make Anora queen because of what she did' (he basically states you should make him king cause there's no other option). However choosing Anora to be queen even after you've been convincing him all this time he would be a good king has no consequences whatsoever. He'll just shrug it off like its nothing.

By making him king, your forcing him to give you up, despite the fact that he hates that more then anything in the world With the mistress optinon, you can still stay with him :) In those times, a mistress was just a term for someone your with, but not married with :)

Then he broke up with me at redcliff and I was mad so every time since I don't bother with Alistair unless I'm human noble. Zevran is probably my favorite. Leliana is a good pick too. Ok, I may seem extremely naive asking this, but what's so bad about being his mistress? Out of all my origin playthroughs, he had the most astounding chemistry with my Dalish Elf. And since he can't marry anyone other than a human noble, I don't see how else this relationship could end happily. Unless I keep him as a Grey Warden, but it just feels so... wrong. After all the drama with him being of Theirin blood, it would just seem like a crappy storytelling if he just remained as a Warden in the end. Plus, I hated that Anora was the one to make that epic speech before the battle and meet with my Warden at Vigil's Keep in Awakening... :x

+Juniper Berry I personally think keeping him as a warden is great, even with all the royal blood drama. It's the life he prefers, anyway, and I actually prefer Anora as a ruler. I can't really see him as king - not because he would be a bad one, because he evidently isn't, but because it doesn't feel like Alistair to me. But I can see how making him king would make for a better story. As for being a mistress... Well, I really hate how it's being done. You really have to make him very selfish in order to take that route, and he completely disregards his devotion to the potential wife and child because "he's the king so he can do whatever he wants". From my warden's perspective it would also feel very degrading to assume that kind of role, as she had her pride. Also, as my warden is a Cousland (who will never be queen), there's also the risk of soiling your family's name as everyone knows who you are and where you come from.

doodle Hm, true. But becoming king develops his character. He evolved from a man who has 0 faith in his ability to lead, to a strong and cunning leader, who is loved by the people. He's still the same sweet and delightful Alistair, with his boyish charms, who makes jokes every chance he gets. But he also matured, as is expected of him, and developed a sense of responsibility. And if you harden him, he seems to warm up to the idea of becoming king quite quickly. Who knows, maybe he even turned out to like being king, like being responsible for once. Because we see him doing a very good job. And Anora.,.. well, she really hasn't made a good image for herself. I really don't know what to make of her. One moment she seems to be devoted to her people, another she seems to only want the power of being queen. She's not a bad queen so far. But putting her on the throne just always felt so... wrong. But I do see what you mean. You're right, now I see it's kinda selfish to become his mistress... or even his queen at this point. Ahh, it's so complicated with him. xD Well anyway, thank you so much for answering. You really enlightened me here. :)

I completely agree about his character development, which really only happens when you harden him, so even if I feel horrible telling him basically to give up his faith in humanity that's what I always do. But I still keep him as a warden most of the time, so that he can have character development just to make the story more interesting xD I do see the appeal with Alistair as a king... But I just loved Anora from the start. I thought she seemed wise, strong and confident, and the fact that she betrayed her own father to try and set things right is admirable. But by then I didn't know about her betrayal that can potentially happen at the landsmeet.... Although if you think about her childhood and life, it isn't really strange for her to out of her way to ensure she stays on the throne :P

He doesn't lose faith in humanity at all. In fact, this makes him strive for a better future. Wills him to take the throne and become a king who is loved dearly by the people. If he had lost his faith in humanity, he wouldn't be such a great king. And about Anora, I suppose shouldn't judge her so quickly. She did prove to be a very capable queen. It just always seemed right to put Alistair on the throne. I guess I just liked the story better this way. But I suppose there's no real right or wrong here, it's just how a player sees it. :)

Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit with my choice of words. Alistair is a very empathetic and selfless person by nature, and then you say "people are selfish, you should learn that" and that somehow inspires confidence in him. I wish you could have given the option to tell him to stand up for himself more without sounding like a douche xD But the whole thing confuses me so much, because saying that all people look out for himself and he should too should make him more selfish (other than having a mistress -part). But an unhardened Alistair will be a lot more selfish and stubborn to get his way and not become king. And when I hardened him he goes on and on about how he doesn't want to be king right up until the landsmeet when he somehow becomes all noble and is willing to sacrifice his freedom for the overall good. I don't know, I like the idea of personality change but it was done a bit clumsily IMO

@Zsofi13thmember It's from the Warden's Keep DLC. You find a Meteor Metal and deliver it to the Blacksmith that appears after completing the DLC and he makes you that sword out of the metal. Hope this helps. :D

Not to get all technical, but that's Dragonbone Plate Armor. Wade's Dragonscale armor looks more like the heavy chainmail set. I like the Dragonbone armor too. That's what my Arcane Warrior Mage is currently wearing.

I'm rather amused with the idea of trying to have my male noble Warden marry Anora but keeping his lovely Zevren on the side. No worries about any bastards to confuse the succession and you get a live-in bodyguard! I'm currently on that particular playthrough, but I'm a long way from the end at this point.

I did this with my Dalish elf and it seems like the best option. Think about it: You get Alistair, Anora isn't on the throne, but you don't have to go through the political bull of being queen.

I got to 0:56 and I couldn't watch anymore, I even cried a little :( I always either played as a noble and became queen with him as king or put Anora on the throne, I couldn't even imagine what he would do if he was to become king and I was the commoner

I'm pretty sure that, in order to get the option, Alistair's personality needs to be "hardened" aka, after he meets Goldanna, you have to say something along the lines of "Everyone is out for themselves, Alistair, you should know that" after that, he becomes sort of resolved to be the king, whereas if you say something else, he will continue on NOT wanting to be king.

I agree. The ending was really buggy. I am beta testing a modification project right now that will fix it if you have the PC version. I find this happens in a lot of games - the relationship QA is not well tested.

@Kakashismyboy Alistair needs to be hardened. When you do Alistair's personal quest, right as you leave the house, you MUST tell Alistair "Everyone's looking out for their own. You should learn that". The next time you talk to him, he'll say he's been thinkin about what you say and as long as you DON'T say "That's not what I meant" he will be hardened. Its doesn't say he's hardened, but he is. Check the dragonage wiki for what exactly changes when hes hardened.

You girls got it all wrong, Your race doesn't matter, you need to hae hardened Alistair in order to become his mistress. It can be achieve by choosing "Everyone is out for themselves, you should learn that" dialogue option upon leaving Goldanna's house during his quest. A dialogue will then trigger at the camp and unless you tell him "no don't do that" or something, he will be hardened and place his feeling ahead of duty

There are glitches galore unfortunately in the console versions, there are specific things that can trigger impossible to resolve situations due to bugs. It is indeed possible to have Anora as sole queen and him alive, but its very specific on what you must do, as certain acts glitch Alistair to Hardened and make him try to forcibly take the throne. On the same hand, trying to marry Anora yourself (male Human Noble) and keep Alistair is screwed up as well.

You should learn that." when outside Goldanna's house after/during the "Alistair's family" companion quest, this does not alter his opinion of you, and shall permanently "harden" him.

Interesting.. Quite true though. :X Thankfully I have Dragon Age Origins for the PC, and got the mods that fixes a lot of Bugs. And lets me recruit a few characters I didn't want to see die. >-> Like Jowan for instance, I also though plan to keep Loghain alive this time around. It has always felt like it was the right thing to do. Sadly that man was only trying to what was right. Alistair always just has this way of saying, "No, I don't care what your gut says, we are totally killing him."

Rian Hanson this is 5 years late but I’ve gotta say killing Loghain whether by my hand or Alistair’s feels like something has been righted. I actually adored Duncan when I first played and just like that he’s gone. So i also wanted Loghain to pay. Also he let Howe kill the entire Cousland family so there was that. I also hate Anora. I like her but I don’t.
