Leveraging her personal experience of loss, failure and uncertainty, Michelle Obama sheds her political image and gets candid about her life. It's not a political book but a book of the coming of age of one of the most influential people today, and it speaks to women who also experience self doubt and challenges.
What we loved:
1) Her writing style. No matter how educated and sophisticated Michelle Obama is, the language and tone in her book never puts herself above anyone else. She's as down-to-earth as your next door neighbor, and makes reading her book fun and not cumbersome.
2) Her candidness. From miscarriage to first mom gitters, Michelle Obama exposes, and quite bravely, her real life situations and lessons. With every laughter comes pain; with every smile comes hardship. Her life, as public and successful as may be, never derails from the real life and humanly challenges.
3) Her vulnerability. Along with candidness, Michelle Obama becomes vulnerable to her audience. She speaks about the very tough and tragic times during her life, including her father's untimely death, having to push through IVF alone, and feeling uncomfortable as a public figure. Through truthful storytelling, she connects with her audience.
What can the book improve on?
Though candid about her past, Michelle Obama still is a political figure, and at times she does hold back. During the ladder parts of her book, when she served as the nation's First Lady, she stopped digging into her feelings and expressing her opinions. There may be some repercussions to her doing that, so it's natural that she shies away at times. She didn't do anything wrong but it would have been nice for her to let us in a bit more.
