In BTT 020, I chat with Joshua Becker-the founder of Becoming Minimalist and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Minimalist Home and The More of Less.
Joshua and I delve into why it can be so easy to accumulate things and hard to let them go. We discuss how minimalism can help us clarify what's important, better align with our values and be more creative. Whether you're interested in learning more about a practical, step-by-step approach to decluttering your home or the power of asking how you can help others, you'll find this conversation to be a great listen on living more intentionally. ↓ more ↓

Just 5 weeks into decluttering my beginning level hoard. It seems like it might never end so I keep reminding myself to just keep at it. I'm sad at how my brain worked to get me to the point of so much unneeded stuff. In my present mindset it's just not something I can imagine. A sale, donations, a little bit of recycling, and a little bit to the landfill and I will be more free than I've been in a decade. I do realize trauma is a major part of the reason I got here. I know that no matter what, I won't ever be a slave to things again in this life. I'm retired, living alone, and my cat passed away. Now with less stuff, I will move to a different and better environment for me. I have to let go of some fantasy ideas about myself. I've realized I should never need to buy shoes again! Hiking boots or shoes maybe, but never another kind of shoe. 🤯

This is why I love KonMari - because the focus is on what you KEEP and on what brings you joy. There's no guilt for keeping something sentimental. I love Joshua Becker, but if you ever look at the photos of his home, there's no art, no plants, no beauty. It's just... functional. So somewhere between a cluttered hoarder home and a soulless boring shell are places like Neal Caffrey's apartment in White Collar - keeping what makes your heart sing. I'm getting toward that point. A home filled with things that bring you joy.

Maybe that's what works for his family. But if art and plants add visual joy to your life. Keep that and focus your attention somewhere else :). I agree with you. I need a little visual stimuli.

Great video. Joshua is helping me so much on my journey to a minimalist lifestyle. I watch his videos over and over again. One thing that I really love, that comes across in all of his videos, is his desire to help others. Be encouraged Joshua, you are doing a fantastic job, and I believe that it will benefit our sad, weary world.

Listened to this on my drive for errands. So deep and inspiring. I am currently reading the book and have been a minimalist for 3 years but had slowly let stuff creep in through gifts. Don’t worry, I have a disease and it irritates me not having a timeline in which I have to live but also liberated me to live meaningfully.

My husband is active-duty Army and we move every 18 months to three years. He’s been in for 16 years. And I think he’s slowly starting to come around the idea that he needs to get rid of a few things. Moving is definitely extremely stressful. And even more so when you have two children like we do. I’ve slowly started to work through our home in preparation to move in the next two months. Thank you for sharing your videos and inspiration.

Kelly, good luck with your move! I was a military wife with no kids and the best move was one going toJapan. It forced me to get rid of a lot of things. I hope your husband sees how hard this is for you. And thank you for helping our country by supporting your husband. I don’t think “civilians” realize how important military spouses are. Hugs from Arizona where I am retired and have acquired too many things 😉🤗

Every one actually have different personal believes around getting rid of things, First thank you both for this uploaded video, I came from 12 sibling family my parents live on 160 acres farm and stuff stack every where I was born into this type of life. So my parent born 1916 and 1920 years married back in 1930's and had children almost every year for 12 years we are all close in age. I was taught you got to hold on to stuff because other people are going without and my parents would say do not be wasteful so that where my holding on the stuff came from now , once both my parents pass away I, just asking myself why do I have this or that item? I already encounter lot of death by this time. my 3 older brothers past away one older sister. And what was my life personally. So because everyone kind of taught differently from our parents people in our lives is what cause people to hold on to things but to let it go can be many reasons. I move 14 times so this open my eyes up to why am I moving this again? Yep! moving really get all of us asking why do I have it and why do I really want it? In 2016 my oldest brother past away his 10 acres was fill with so much stuff, thank God I had other brothers and Sisters they help sale what they could then when the 10 acres got sold we took a lost left the rest on the 10 acres so that from my life and the different reason why I declutter my life. Was it easy, I just did not think about it just ask one ? Do I really use it? if not gone. thank you Break the Twitch Podcast People and Joshua Becker great insightful reason to re-think our lives.

Great info and I loved the discussion between you both. I was talking back to the screen when you brought up the point of if you no longer have something (such as a quick fix) you need to be more scrappy or become a problem solver. I was *just* talking about this idea today and how I miss the days of ditching my microwave and then finding ways to prep food without it. It just felt freeing. I laughed at the avocado slicer comment! I think we are smart enough to find a way around gadgets and get back to basics. It's skills development and I agree that it's so good for our brains. Thanks for the info here!

I’ve moved about 4 times in the last 4 years, and there’s a new move planned for this year. Each move, our stuff gets decluttered. As quickly as we let go, more things come in, like my partner joining the military and gaining more stuff. I’m realizing that even if I let go of 50%, I still need to refuse the free stuff given, return things back to their home, and meditate on gratitude and my purpose. I drives me mad to see clutter, especially if it’s clutter I can’t afford. That’s not what I’m here... to be a sorter for the rest of years. Sometimes I get distracted and lured by the shiny stuff, and have to remind myself, my mission... and that I’m fine without the extra.
@KA2HRO
@KA2HRO 2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of less. I’ve live without stuff for a long time. I never knew there was a name for it till about 8 or 9 years ago. I find it kind of funny that there are people who’ve made this into their jobs. Lol. All the different minimalists on KZbin all saying the same thing over and over. They must rack their brains trying to think of a new way to say what’s been said probably thousands of times. Since I first discovered these people calling themselves minimalists, and their seeming effort to recruit others to jump on the bandwagon, I’ve never really understood it. Obviously people can try to live with less because it’s become something of a fad, but I don’t think people will stick with it once the newness wears off. I think real minimalists have a predisposition to live with less. There is something in our head that pushes us in that direction. Nobody had to recruit me. Ive always like clear spaces and I always will. I don’t struggle about getting rid of things. In other words, I don’t have to talk myself into it. If I don’t feel totally comfortable letting something go, I keep. I don’t fret over it. Because I have so few possessions, I don’t find myself having a need to get rid of things that often. Anyway, just thought I’d chime in about how I see it. Thanks for reading my viewpoint.

On January 22, 2019 barely a month my eight year old son died a tragic death. I have thought about that day of spending 7 hours cleaning so many times. Whenever I stay in a motel or hotel, I realize immediately how really little it takes to not only survive, but to thrive. So much of everything else is just peripheral noise. I must get my life in order. I just turned 67 in November, and I do not wish to be burdened by my possessions till the end of my life. I have had various things happen in my home that caused things to become cluttered. Flooding, termites, etc. And it seems like I never regained control of it. I'm very tired of living like this, and I long for the freedom of not having so much. I may never be a true minimalist, but I would like to pare down my possessions dramatically. Thank you so much for this program.

"Peripheral noise"...so true. And yes, things that happened in our lives sometimes make our homes to become cluttered (in my case death of loved ones, a category 5 hurricane, damage to our home...) So true...and owning so much stuff also gives you a false sense of security. We become slaved to our possesions.

Just watching this video and saw your comment. I’m in my 70’s and have gotten control FINALLY, but it was a process. I found I did one big purge .. then lost interest. Oh what a waste of time!! Then i found the KZbin channel “Diane in Denmark”. Motivation coach and organization expert. Sounds dry and “omg NO”! Lol.. but she is delightful and a cheerleader for success. She teaches The Flylady system.. TINY bits of moving forward daily and poof! It’s done! My home is peaceful and clean and I find it a joy to be in it..especially now with the issues we are all dealing with. Check out The Fly Lady system and Diane. Diane has a 30 day plan and it is all free information (she encourages you to NOT SPEND MONEY on stuff) .. it changed everything for me. Hope this helps and that you live abundantly with what you have! Don’t get Want confused with Need. You will feel blessed with your new confidence. This morning I was getting dressed and spotted a shirt hanging that I never wear. Pulled it out and put it in a bag I keep for donations. Declutter Done for today!🤪 Over this last year I have gotten rid ofSO MUCH.. but in steps that are painless and give me such pleasure…and my house can breathe! Stay well…hope this helps!

I'm moving now. I have a dining room full of never ending boxes. AND I've been de-cluttering over the last year (without knowing about the move). Thank God for that! I've been watching "Minimal Mom" and because of her I found "Joshua Becker". I know as I unpack I will be letting go of much much more. Things keep "clicking" the more I do this.

Death of a dream. Hahaha. There is some tv comedy that has a episode where the guy has this box of stuff in the garage he never uses because he wants to be that.... so true man. The reason every guy has a box of that stuff of things you wish you could be.... Man this is one of the best Becker videos I’ve seen as it’s long and someone is asking him so many deep questions. Thank you!!

This is awesome .I've had a hard time letting go of " things " .My children who are now adults have always accumulated a lot , threw gifts having a huge family or buying things we didnt need .Now that we have one adult child home , I've delcluttered a lot .it started with moving to a smaller apt .I also always felt guilty buying things when some ppl have absolutely nothing. My adult child has OCD and collects a lot if stuff but I try to stop her from bringing it in the home . My journey took me 2 years and we are still decluttering .I've only kept family heirlooms, furniture , and clothing and dishes, everyday essentials one can't live with out. I've been watching your videos , it's so true all I ever did was clean and move things around . I collected things because I would become very anxious when my two youngest with bipolar were having a very hard time. But in the end it really doesn't make one feel better .I only wish I started in my thirties . Oh well , there's always room to change .

@The Knapp Family For some people could be public speaking. But I guess is a fobia, like fly, heights, spiders, etc. When they talk about death is how you cope with the death of a love one as far as pain. Divorce is second and moving is third. They are talking about things that are painful not fears.

Objects hold memories, and some of those memories can become burdensome, or they provoke thoughts that carry too many layers of nostalgia.

Cool stuff. Prob not a card-carrying mini. As a Right Divider Christian (II Timothy 2:15), I find the Best Book on life is the KJV WORD. In year 83 now, best time of my life EVER!! Every day, one day closer to heaven. I live in two-room apt, so one can't have too much stuff. A&E just uploaded HOARDERS, that will motivate to declutter. Joshua, u could have had your lil boy help u clean the garage, then play. My truck, Uncle Ralph, is 2002. This comment is long I realize. I do love the minimalist vids. I was prob organizing the delivery room as I was born. C U here, there or in the air!

Going trough the stuff is even hard when you know exactly what you need to do, but you're just sorry for every hour it will take. (Like i accumulate a lot of small notes, and getting rid of them for me means, going trough every paper, reading, either dumping immediately or writing the info somewhere else and then dumping it. So it's horribly time consuming).

I started to do that as well and then realized the emotional attachment. What if I forget this particular date or piece of information? I think Joshua said it earlier when he wanted to reference a book to someone then realizes he can’t because he got rid of it. What I realized earlier before this podcast was that I could let it go and not hold so tight to the written down words and I loved that in Joshua’s experience it lead him to be openly creative when dealing with his situation. I found myself able to let some of this go by asking “Is it going to be more burdensome to hold on to it or let it go? Is it going to be more freeing to hold on so tightly or let it go? It’s a journey for sure! Keep on keeping on!👏👏👏

It’s moving, divorce, and death. The divorce could probably be avoided with minimalism. Maybe even early death.
