Sri lankan Costal people have surnames like Perera , Mendis , Fernando due to Portuguese influences
@truebelief3631 Жыл бұрын
Apart from Negombo, there is a suburb of Colombo known as Moratuwa where the surname Fernando predominates. The top 3 surnames in Sri Lanka are all Portuguese, Perera, Fernando & De Silva in that order. In comparison the locals don't have that many "British" surnames. This despite the British ruling the entire country for 150 years , while the Portuguese only occupied the coastal areas.

And what’s the thinking of how/why that’s the case? I mean you’ve obviously explained it - Portuguese occupation, but were family names not a documented thing previously, was it Inter-marriage between Portuguese and locals, fashionable to take on new names of the new occupants or was it something that was enforced etc?
@truebelief3631 Жыл бұрын
@@TheWanderLife , It was not enforced, the locals simply adopted these names because it was fashionable or convenient. Many went back to their original surnames after the departure of the Europeans. Yes Intermarriage was encouraged by the Portuguese & resulted in the Sri Lankan "Burgher" community, majority of whom are now to be found in Australia. But these are Sinhalese who are not mixed , but simply have Portuguese names. Worth pointing out that not all of them are Catholics , there are also some Buddhists with such names.

Heyyy! Thanks so much for the kind words! I know right, although after being out in the sun and being pelted by the humidity, I’m somewhat glad in the end it wasn’t an hours long fishing trip 🙈😂

great video. My grand uncle was the only fisherman who carried on our families ancient tradition of being a fisherman in Negombo. Many people have christian names and we have probably been christians for 1900 years. Some of us came from India.

So do you think it will eventually be a profession that’s left to those with bigger boats etc and these typical fishing areas/villages will be a thing of the past at some point?

@@TheWanderLife i dont think so the karawa are like a clan who have strong cultural ties to negombo
